They could at least beat the drum on instagram! USFS makes skaters be afraid to be controversial, which actually inhibits them from growing their followers. Look at how many followers the 5th or 6th ranked gymnast has on Team USA. It all matters.
@@TheSkatingLesson Right?? All this polite PR statement nonsense. Even worse is JSF choosing not to engage. No wonder the Russians walked all over the judges all these years, no one was willing to put up a fight
I agree that Track & Field took a huge hit because of doping. It is not on people's radars any longer except for true fans (like me!). However, I think the sport has done a good job of cleaning up its act. The testing protocols are very stringent now and the Russians are non- existant in the sport.
Clownness. Everyone saw what Simone was worth without doping (which was “legalized” by her country), and also, everyone suddenly “saw the light” about Lance and Marion. It should be a shame, but no, the main thing is who pays.
It’s legal not by her country but because she followed WADA rules (W stands for world just in case you didn’t know that). Kamila could have submitted paperwork to be an authorized user of what she was found positive for, of course then they would have to explain why a 15 year with no documented history of heart disease needed this adult medicine at such an early age & it likely wouldn’t have been granted, but the rules are there to be followed. Next time, just make your user name @ Russian troll & see your own way out.
@@amethyst5512 WADA stand for world, but located in North America, cmon. If you wanna speak about rules, then Rules should not let ANYONE use doping to compete, but north american WADA made rules that some people can use doping if they have paper. It is as supid as it sounds.
Sadly, I'm not surprised by the length of time this is taking, nor by the secrecy. The IOC still haven't been transparent about medal reallocations in track and field from Athens 2004. That was 19 years ago. So let's hope we won't have to wait until 2041.
Dave your professional calling is becoming figure skating analyst/commentator. It is so nice listening to your show. Also USFS could use you as a consultant.
Just follow the rules of the game. Why is it so hard? The ”honoured” T in russia will for sure comment this in her usual toxic way. As she is complaining about Trusova not training. Well so does not Scherbakova. Nothing bad about her but the fact and the toxicity and the goddam rules.
Kamila is amazing to watch and I feel for the kid, but she’s a doper. Strip her of the Russian Nationals (which already happened), the Euros and the Olympics and anything else won within four years of the positive test. Hopefully she’s matured and learned her lesson. I think FOR ME being stripped of all winnings for four years and her whole country already banned is pretty severe enough for me. That would leave her at 19, more autonomous, better able to make independent decisions and still a few years left to compete.
as a senior skater she knows the rules. My daughter knew at a much younger age and diligently checked anything against the WADA list and she was not a senior elite level. Any other athlete would have been bamned on the spot. I feel sad for the clean skaters and for the damage the delays have done to the integrity of sport.
@jsc2606 This sport never had integrity. If you are a fan of figure skating, it's because you probably grew up around the ice, like me and most fans I know (not just casual watchers and fan clubs filled with people that never skated a day in their life). Also, your experience is not everyone elses experience, I'm sure your non-elite kid didn't have the most powerful coach controlling them or an entire country's federation known for foul play backing them. But I agree about the ban, ANY senior athlete NEEDS to be banned for four years from the positive test, hence my opinion of her bringing able to come back at 19.

Oh my God, can someone please send Ms. Brennan to a class on how to answer the question asked without going on for 15 minutes about every conceivable tangent first. I don’t need to hear a five minute ramble on how valuable being there in person is because of the view of the Swiss Alps. I’ve tried to listen to her interviews whenever she’s been on, and every time I want to bash my head against the wall. I can’t believe anyone’s ever hired her as a journalist because she has no ability to be concise.
Who are we kidding though…they’re just postponing this until Kamila reaches Eteri’s expiration date. That way they can easily wash their hands and say well you no longer can jump…we were with you throughout this process…sorry not sorry…buh bye ✌️
While I don't think they are purposely delaying so Valieva will be retired, it is true that she will likely be near the end of her career when this is revolved based on the timeline of other Team Tutberidze skaters. The delay tactics likely have something to do with the overall Russian ban and negotiations going on within the IOC related to Russia being admitted into future Olympic Games.
Who and on what basis decides that for this violation - six months of suspension, and for that - four years? I see the logic in the fact that Austrian skiers are given a four-year disqualification for blood transfusions - everything is quite obvious: the guys wanted to improve their results and understood perfectly well what they were doing. You won’t accidentally put on an IV with almost a liter of blood. But when the same four years are given to the minor Valieva for a cardioprotector, which has no effect on the results in figure skating, I don’t see the logic. This all makes me doubt the impartiality of WADA and its associated International Olympic Committee
Americans have no doping. It’s just that all athletes are sick and they are forced to take certain medications according to the TUE. And the fact that they run and jump twice as hard because of this does not matter. They are for clean sport.
I believe the way that situation went down, damaged the sport for years to come. Nobody wanted to watch how that young girl was attacked by the world. She was only 15 and not totally aware of what she had done. The crying, the cruelty, her not able to perform and people spewing hate was gut wrenching. The story has so many wholes. If she was doping, she should not have been allowed to participate. They clearly had other talent that could have taken her place on the team. Something happened that makes the public not trust the process or how the media harassed a child. The Olympic Games will never be the same when it comes to the skating events and if you give those medals to the US, it will increase fans doubts about the story.
@@TheSkatingLessonDave, you agree with the comment, yet you blame the Russians. The decision to allow Kamila to participate in the Olympics after being made aware of the doping results was not the Russians, was it? No, it was not. And the people who came after a 15 year old and severely damaged her mental state on national television and in major newspapers around the world were Americans, no??? (Johnny, Tara, etc.) The media are the ones who soured people on figure skating. And still you and Christine are continuing the narrative that is built on half truths and gossip at the expense of Kamila. Stop bullying Kamila. You and Christine act like you know the truth but you do not. Journalism should be about examining the facts yet you cannot seem to refrain from manipulating and distorting stories you’ve heard through the grapevine. 👎🏼
A very speculative idea but I wonder if we need countries to look into taking a hair sample test for all active and recently retired skaters that cross borders to perform in ice shows or competitions. It shouldn't be this hard for countries to hold other countries accountable.
Never going to happen, most especially for performative sports like skating and gymnastics. The hair for this type of test has to come from the crown of your head (so not lower like the nape of the neck) and it is not just a few hairs, it’s a chunk. And not just once, but every time you test, multiple times a year. Resulting in multiple bald spots on the top of the head where they can’t be hidden. Not a practical suggestion.
@@alexac3098they could just make it so you have to have a hair test if they’re suspected of doping & that they could do by bringing the biological passport to figure skating.
No matter what one’s opinion of Russian athletes and Kamila in particular is, there’s no denying that Christine is quite antagonistic in her reporting about the situation. Christine is so pissed that she went to Switzerland to stand by the door of the closed hearing, knowing she won’t get any info…and she even paid for her expenses…she paid for them because USA Today would not have sponsored her. In the end, she had nothing to show for her trip but a press release which is publicly available anyway. Furthermore, in this interview, she talks and talks, but there’s very little substance to what she is saying. Christine makes 0 sense when she tries to explain the difference between Simone Biles’ therapeutic exceptions and Kamila’s doping case. Specifically, Christine did not clearly explain the situation where the drug for which one has a therapeutic exception is actually performance enhancing. She is saying that Simone is honest and Valieva is a liar…it doesn’t make sense; in fact there is a dilemma…if one needs a drug for medical reasons but this drug is also improving your performance, there is a problem here…a serious problem… There’s an argument to be made that an athlete that requires such drugs should not be allowed to compete against athletes who are not eligible for therapeutic exceptions.
A grant of therapeutic exemption already covers an unbiased analysis as to whether the performance enhancement/benefit would be detrimental to the fairness of competition in that particular instance. Your " perceived problem " is already solved and just betrays your lack of understanding about matters that have been settled and overseen even before TEUs were even implemented.
@@jamesyu5212 how do you know the analysis is unbiased? There’s no lack of understanding. I understand just fine. Give me an example where the analysis was conducted and the therapeutic exception was denied. There should be quite a few of these cases….the thing is therapeutic exemption process is secretive; there’s no way to know whether people overseeing the process are really unbiased.
@@leonidkzhow about this…there’s a process to go through to get an exemption to certain medications. Just like the entire gymnastics team doesn’t take stimulants, it would raise a red flag if an entire figure skating team of young, healthy athletes needed heart medication. The process is in place to ensure the athlete actually needs the medication (they have a diagnosis and medical history to back it up). If an athlete has a medical need, a medication is going to help even the playing field, not give an athlete an inherit advantage. Medication can be therapeutic and life saving. If an athlete has a heart condition, like blocked blood vessels, trimetazidine would help open up the blood vessels, help oxygenation (which is bad with blocked blood vessels, etc.). In this case, an athlete who isn’t getting enough oxygen to their heart, is at a disadvantage. It could be dangerous to further increase the workload of the heart without treating the issue. In this case, an exemption would be filed to keep the athlete healthy. The use of this medication in this circumstance is would allow the athlete to get similar oxygenation and blood flow of that of their competitors. It wouldn’t be an advantage in this case because the medication is helping overcome a defect. That’s why these exemptions exist. I’d an athlete is taking medications for conditions they don’t have they are being given an unfair advantage; whether that is a stimulant, a heart medication or xenon gas. None of the medications make an athlete perform death defying tricks; it just allows them to have more energy, more focus, faster recovery times, allowing the athlete to work harder and longer to perfect skills.
@@leonidkzThe point of an international process or independent organisation like WADA is that all countries agreed to the same processes going in. The real bias is that every other normal country would have sanctioned their own athlete because they recognize international agreements they committed to and what international cooperation means in sports, instead of making it a geopolitical football to further antagonism to other countries
The idea that doping helps you skate is the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a while. This isn’t the Tour de France. Kamila Valieva is the best woman to ever put on skates. It doesn’t matter who gets what medal, all of KV’s programs are here for all to see and her body of work proves who’s the best.
My brain says a medal ceremony at a World Figure Skating Championships in the future or at the 2026 winter olympics before the 2026 team event medal ceremony. One has to seriously doubt they will be ready by next summer.
Why do we trust TUEs post-Nassar with what has been alleged against him in that respect? What water do they hold, if a team doctor can diagnose, rx and sign off on a TUE, on a NGB's payroll?
Dave, can you explain why an athlete who tested positive from a banned substance, can be found not guilty? Regardless if she’s a minor, the fact doesn’t change that a positive test result from a banned substance? This creates unfair playing field among the other athletes that tested clean. The athlete should just be disqualified.
I don’t foresee figure skating rebounding, even if the cheating is punished. It’s extremely hard to watch events in the US-Peacock has them live but can’t replay, etc. Russia has a better showcase on their networks than US, it’s pathetic. Can’t watch US on UA-cam, etc. That’s the dagger.
The reason why they wouldnt stop cheating is because all they get everytime they got caught is a teeny tiny slap on the wrist. Sotnikova got away with it too

I'm disappointed by the lack of commitment from the USFS team, both skaters and people from the federation. None of them went with Christine?
Literally any time you have Christine Brennan on, it's always a great episode!

Appreciate that
I can't wait to hear what Tatiana Tarasova has to say about this 🤣🍿🍿🍿🍿
Honestly, she is an old lady with marasmus. Who cares what she will say.
Just follow the rules of the game. Why is it so hard?
The ”honoured” T in russia will for sure comment this in her usual toxic way. As she is complaining about Trusova not training. Well so does not Scherbakova. Nothing bad about her but the fact and the toxicity and the goddam rules.
I am so sick of Russia!
What are you relationship with the country to be sick?

Just like Christine Brennan. Get a room
Also, thanks so much Christine for using your own funds and time to bring us some information about this situation.
as a senior skater she knows the rules.
Great conversation!

She’s American.
Christine is a legend, absolute pleasure (well kind off..what a mess) to hear her still persuing this story .
Ok Christine is carrying the weight of figure skating journalism on her back. And Dave too 🫡
🙏
Who are we kidding though…they’re just postponing this until Kamila reaches Eteri’s expiration date. That way they can easily wash their hands and say well you no longer can jump…we were with you throughout this process…sorry not sorry…buh bye ✌️
Kamila is already in the middle of puberty. We all have eyes. She has grown overnight. I don't think she will be jumping too much longer.
@@TheSkatingLessonagree, it’s the politics behind this!
Thank You Dave! I love Christine B!
I agree :(
@@TheSkatingLessonDave, you agree with the comment, yet you blame the Russians. 👎🏼
Yasss...Christine Brennan is a legend!
100%
It is unbeleavable. She was doped. Finish! It is a real crime.
I hope they find Kamila guilty and all other sportsmen can enjoy their medals at the Paris Olympic 🙏🏻
Christine Brennan 🙌
🙏
No. Seriously, this would be lost to the ether if it wasn’t for you and Christine. Thank you. 🙏 No one else is reporting on this.
This is ridiculous, thank you for your honesty in coverage.
🙏
She is saying that Simone is honest and Valieva is a liar…it doesn’t make sense; in fact there is a dilemma…if one needs a drug for medical reasons but this drug is also improving your performance, there is a problem here…a serious problem…
There’s an argument to be made that an athlete that requires such drugs should not be allowed to compete against athletes who are not eligible for therapeutic exceptions.
One had permission, the other didn't. That said, Brennan is hardly an unbiased reporter.
Thank you for the video Dave!! You are my NY Times, Washington Post ❤️

What a boondoggle-they just don’t want deal with the fact Russia seems to never follow rules so continued sanctions have no effect at change!
Very frustrating

Why do we trust TUEs post-Nassar with what has been alleged against him in that respect? What water do they hold, if a team doctor can diagnose, rx and sign off on a TUE, on a NGB's payroll?
Maybe I need to do a video on TUE. There are some missing pieces in understanding.
Wouldn’t the Paris games want nothing to do with cleaning up Beijing’s toxic mess.

so sad if Valieva got into this scandal. Russians would have won anyway.... so no need for doping:)
They wouldn't dope if they don't need it to win.
Kamila Valieva is the best female skater in the world. She is innocent.
Lol
Dave, can you explain why an athlete who tested positive from a banned substance, can be found not guilty? Regardless if she’s a minor, the fact doesn’t change that a positive test result from a banned substance? This creates unfair playing field among the other athletes that tested clean. The athlete should just be disqualified.
Because she’s a child and probably had an adult administer the drug
I don’t foresee figure skating rebounding, even if the cheating is punished. It’s extremely hard to watch events in the US-Peacock has them live but can’t replay, etc. Russia has a better showcase on their networks than US, it’s pathetic. Can’t watch US on UA-cam, etc. That’s the dagger.
It’s a shame. I don’t think USA figure skating is dead but yes the Russians have been spending a lot of money on their shows
