Accurate. The blade was marked not only to see the fan blade rotation but it was the blade that was selected with an explosive charge to see how the engine holds together when the blade is separated.

I used to work for United Airlines at SFO in the maintenance shop where we blended Stage 1 Compressor blades and a few others. One day an Inspector was showing me a blade that had been on a disc in an engine where there had been a bird strike. The blade if I recall was off of a Pratt & Whitney 2000 series engine. The leading edge of the blade looked like a big bite had been taken out of it or like what you might think a cannon ball might do to 38 blades. Unbelievable. Even the slightest imperfection on the leading edge of the blades can make an engine lose power.

Afaik, these bird tests are only to make sure the engine does not explode during bird strikes. Engine damages are unpreventable using current technology. But making sure , engines do not explode make sure that planes can land safely in most cases. If the engine had exploded, that's it. That's why tests are critical for approval.

My uncle worked for a company that loaned their air cannon they used for testing windshields to a company in Europe. They tested them by shooting whole chickens much like you would get from the grocery store , at upwards of 450mph . They proceeded to fire one through the cockpit and 40 something rows of seats. So he and a team were sent to see what went wrong. " You gotta thaw the suckers out first!!" Was the diagnosis.

    -One to throw chickens at

The thrust reversal is there to minimize the landing gear break stress so that the brakes can last longer, so if a plane doesn’t have a thrust reversal it will have to land at a lower landing speed.

    Little known pilot life hacks:
    1. If you turn your transponder to 7500, you can actually get a cool free escort from an F-35!
    2. ATC bothering you with constant chatter? Simply go to 7600 to relax
    3. Is it taxing (haha get it?) to wait for your turn while other planes land? Turn your transponder to 7700 to get free priority landing!
(The FAA hates these simple hacks)

*_Former Boeing.... High Bypass Turbofan Engines are remarkable..._*
They are one of the most important parts of any aircraft. They must withstand forces acting on them without failure. They are the single most expensive part on any aircraft. Because of this, Boeing installs the engines at the last stage in Final Assembly. No benefit of putting multi-million dollar engines on until actually needed.
There are a few others things modern Jet Engines have to survive but rarely tested; FOD getting sucked up off runways, baggage carts and containers placed too close to inlets, and unfortunately people who get sucked into an engine.
Testing Jet Engines require very specialized facilities, equipment, and staff. When Boeing buys GE Engines for the Triple Seven, they come to us already tested and certified. Boeing has it's own testing and continuous quality improvement procedures for each aircraft, but we leave Engine Testing to the Engine Manufacturers.

@@kz03jd Thanks for comment. Great comparison. I used to say it won't fit inside most houses, it would stick up through attic. But that really has impact. Think how big a 37 fuselage is.
I told people the GE90-115B numbers had meaning, GE = Gigantic Engine, 90 = 9 foot diameter main fan. (I was wrong, it's over 11 feet), 115 = 115,000 pounds of thrust. They can make up to 125,000 now I think.
When I was at Boeing, loved standing next to on install fixture. People look rather small when standing at mouth of that monster engine.

Back in the day ( Late 70s ) I started working at a place called Allisons and they made jet engines primarily for the military and a lot of it was experimental work . They also made large marine engines . This was back when turbine engines were the hottest big thing . They had their own test facilities but ours were all indoors . The operator had to have an airline taxi license to operate the engines . I remember that they had chicken and pigeon coups on the roof of the test facility and back then they just shot a bird or chicken that were alive out of an air cannon directly into the engines just to see what kind of damage they would inflict on the turbine engines . I sure would have hated to be the guys that had to tear down each engine to assess the damage just so they could build it back to do it all over again .They even shot a few live turkeys in them to see what would happen . After several years animal rights activists complained about cruelty to animals and that was the end of using live animals and they had to buy frozen ones and thaw them out to shoot them into the engines . Ah , the good ole days ! P.S. I remember one time and I don't know what they shot into the engine but it was a TF-41 engine and it completely demolished everything in that room ! Where the guy set to monitor the engine there was a 3 foot thick piece of bullet proof glass and it even cracked it to pieces ! Whatever it was everyone heard it cause it sounded like a bomb .

Former Boeing, I saw an episode of Mythbusters testing the Chicken Gun. They were simulating a Bird Strike on the Front Windshield. Chickens had no problem going through Impact Certified windshields. They found out that it didn't matter if bird was frozen or thawed out. Both caused catastrophic damage well beyond the windshield. Chickens also entered cockpit, then went through plane.

Sea story, my squadron saw detached duty at Midway...Gooney birds (Layson Albatross) being ubiquitous...it was inevitable some crew would eat one and did. The smallest mech onsite had to go down the intake of a T56 of the #3 engine of a P-3 to clean out the mess. I was glad to be 6'4" and 200lbs. LOL. They douched the engine and later flew back to Barbers Pt. HI.

I'm shocked at how many people keep suggesting mesh, metal screen or even a net to be place in front of the engines! Trust me, if that was a valid solution, it would have been done by now. Jet engines work mainly by sucking in air, and everything is measured and created for that sole purpose: air flow. it NEEDS to intake air without anything getting in the way of that. A screen will block the engine and interfere with the air being sucked in. Even if you don't know how they work and didn't think of that, if the net itself fails then it also will be ingested by the engine and you will end up with the same problem! So its not a solution at all.
Apart from that, many people seem to forget you aren't flying just above the city. Most commercial flights fly around 30,000+ feet above. Birds do not exist anywhere near that, so any type of net would be useless for 98% of the flight. Bird strikes are really only a concern during take off and landing. So it would just provide no use overall.

    • @RLMonsterA380
      @RLMonsterA380 Рік тому +2

      1. If something should hit the mesh at such high speeds, the mesh is guaranteed to break and get sucked into the engine causing total damage. It's safer to have a bird shredded by the fan into little bits than have a wire mesh get sucked in and tangled in the fan.
      2. Even if you don't think so, at that speed a wire mesh would create drag .
