FIRE secured a win for Jeff and free speech in Alpharetta, Georgia, after officers arrested veteran Jeff Gray for holding a sign supporting homeless vets! Now the town must educate its police officers on the First Amendment, avoid punishing people for demonstrating or panhandling, and pay a $55k settlement.
The police need free speech education, and that’s just what they’re getting.
Safe to say, Alpharetta is learning an important lesson: It’s easier to defend speech than to censor it. FIRE looks forward to seeing free expression flourish in Alpharetta, now that the court upheld residents’ rights to free speech!

The officers should’ve been criminally charged with deprivation of rights under color of law
18 USC 242 unfortunately uses the word "knowingly" so they all pretend they don't know the law and it was a mistake so they're never charged.

You have rights UNTIL you say NO to a cop!
Just because someone violates your rights doesn't mean you don't still have them. You can always seek a redress of these violations and receive just compensation in a court of law, just as Jeff did. But you have to be willing to fight for your rights. There will always be people either ignorant of your rights or bullies who knowingly violate them. Sadly, most will just complain and lament such unconstitutional violations of their rights rather than seek to redress these infringements. Kudos to Jeff for doing the latter. We all benefit from his selfless work. God bless all vets, especially those homeless, those suffering from mental illness and those addicted to drugs and alcohol as a result of their service.

Love this guy because he doesn't sue for huge amounts of money. Some of his lawsuits have literally listed public apologies and re-education of police as compensation for damages as opposed to cash. He's not one of those "auditors" who is out for reactions and cash. He's out to make a difference.
The point of money damages is to make municipalities hurt a bit for violating the law. He should hit them with big lawsuits, otherwise they just think well lets just do it and see if we get challenged.

I just love the way this Cop-Hater, and all the others out there, completely misuse the term "We The People." I hate to be the one to break it to this loser, but "We The People" doesn't mean the tiny sliver of the population made up of life's losers that can't go a day without a "police problem." While on the other hand, there are literally MILLIONS of Americans that have, and will in the future, gone their entire lives without a single solitary negative interaction with law enforcement. Trying to change the gov is a lost cause. History proves tyranny only gives up it's evil when a physical force greater than them defeats them. That said, these type of videos are educating the American people at a stagger rate. I got involved around 2012. If you would have told me the public would be awaken at the rate it is today, I would have said you are crazy. Our government fears having a large informed populace. They know they don't stand a chance when the people decide enough is enough. Knowledge is a beautiful thing.
