I recently got into 3 inch or smaller knives as an edc. They compliment modern folder very well. I scored an older rough Ryder peanut for $3 on eBay, missing the sheild, but otherwise it’s in fantastic condition and has great snap and action. A lot of my small pen and peanut style knives, are old imperials and colonials, but I’ve recently gotten into collecting small vintage stockmans, at 2.75 inches. Got an uncle Henry from the 70s, and an older Ulster stockman that’s the sane size, I like that you can just drop that into your pocket and it doesn’t take up any space. I find I need the smaller blades a lot during my day, that my bigger knives just don’t preform well for those tasks. I’ve got a tiny trapper like that case one you showed, but it’s a frost Japan and is very nice as well. I never really thought about smaller knives even I started collecting, I’d get all excited bidding on sons huge old coke bottle hunter, or a giant 5 inch lockback. But smaller knives are def great to pair with a medium or larger knife for edc. Great video, loving this series!

Little knives demonstrate the detail of workmanship of a knife company or brand I believe. Making a small perfect working small knife is most times harder than building large size knives.
Rough Rider makes and made a bunch of mini slip joint knife patterns. I have in the two-inch size; the added ring for carrying on a watch chain makes them a tiny bit longer. I have Toothpicks, Trappers, four blade Congresses and three blade stockman models.
The tiny blades are sharp and shiny and have good actions. I bought two of each and they are fun to use, besides being well made. Most times they sell for $5 dollars or less; ask yourself how hard it would be making a tiny four-blade congress without blade rub.
Mine show none and that is why I think they are tiny bargains overlooked by most collectors. For a small price, you get to look at knife pattern you might want in a larger model for a few dollars.
Case, Schatt & Morgan and Queen Brands made tiny size knives; I have Tiny Case Muskrats, stockman and Trapper models. Collectors avoid them for reasons of size and price. They cost more than the full size models. I know somebody likes collecting them because they always sell for more than full size models do.
At some point in my knife collecting, I decided that small knives are just as cool as large ones. Collecting them makes having them something other collectors overlook, that to me is a mistake.

My favorite smaller traditional knife pattern has got to be equal end penknives. I wonder why they aren't nearly as popular nowadays? To me, the pockatble size, two useful blades, and slim profile those knives have are an absolute win! I do think it's funny that my top three favorite patterns: large toothpick, scout, and equal end pen have all fallen out of fame, so to speak. At least while everyone else is collecting trappers and copperheads I'll keep snatching up the large toothpicks and scouts that occasionally show up, lol. Great video, as always, Tobias.

I have a soft spot for carrying tiny knives. I have one permanently in my wallet (an actual slipjoint), keychain, glovebox (with my maibox key for opening letters/packages) and a few of them usually hanging around the dresser for quick pocketing. I favor the peanut, toothpick, or a mini-barlow manicure knife with a doctors knife type end. I do like to collect and carry mini canoes, small pens, and others like a mini EZ open, mini bartenders, mini stockmans but I don't always seek them out, rather I get intrigued by their uniqueness and buy them. The three little Szco's (hunter, cowboy fireman) and I wish that Steel Warrior Field Dog peanut manicure knife actually worked I would carry it everywhere.

Oh and I have a box of Classic SD Victorinoxs that have different things printed on them. I bought them for a buck each many years ago and gave them away
They are great keychain rings for work.

I'm collecting the Case amber bone knives and happened to find a mini copperhead at a local antique shop. Scooped it up fro cheap because it had a bent tip on the main blade. hammered it flat and it has been a great little carry. Great video!

I really like to collect tiny knives. I do have quite a few slip joints, but I also have a lot of tiny lock backs. Of the traditional tiny knives, my favourite is the Butterbean. I only have one tiny toothpick, a rough rider, but I find it very difficult to open. The flat site of the Butterbean are easier to handle. I picked up a mother of pearl peanut today. It is made in Japan under the sabre brand. Unfortunately, the mother of Pearl is rather badly damaged but it’s still a lovely little thing.

Fun video, I enjoy carrying a little fifth pocket knife. I find if I am around people that think knives are weapons and not tools that they feel a bit better when I use the smaller knife. Thanks for sharing and God bless.

I only have one tiny knife, a Case that was used that I bought on eBay on an auction that was just about done. When I paid for it, I looked at the description and realized that I bought a folding knife with like 1.5. to 2 inch blades LOL.
Most of the knives that I own are about 3-4 inch blades and the hunting knives that are fixed have maybe six inch blades max.

Awesome video brother. You have a wonderful day my friend. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

This is a great series on slip joints. I have been carrying small slip joints in my small summer challenge. I have been carrying a 3” or smaller knife as my dedicated knife and so far, I have not had any issues with using just a small knife. I love Jack knife patterns and I would like some more peanuts and small swell centers. I’m definitely exploring the smaller knives and having a great time doing it.

I've come to the conclusion that for most tasks, a small knife is all you really need. Simple and unassuming. That said, I Doubt, I'll ever convince Skip to give up his obsession with Bowie Knives and other Big blades!

I think Lady leg knives are funny. They're funny little knives. I think it's a missed opportunity that no one seems to have a a lady leg knife that has handle material made to look like fishnet stockings or a 'hairy' lady leg knife. It's by no means my favorite slip joint pattern. That honor goes to the Stockman. But it's a fun and I'd like to see a US company make the pattern. To clear up the record. much rather carry like a mini canoe or a Mini stockmen or a mini elephant toenail. But every now and then I would carry my Marbles Orange lady leg knife And tell my buddies , I stole willy Wonka's knife. And make jokes about how he has a thing for umpa loompas. I'm honestly not defending the pattern from your opinion. Some knives are silly. And some people are just as silly to like that kind of knife.
(Edit: Imagine a Lady leg knife with a bulkier handle and a cleaver style blade. I'd call it a Kankle knife. For those who like a little extra. Still pointless. But I'd think it's funny.)

it's kind of crazy that Victorinox retired the entire line of 74mm /3 inch knives. The bladeless Alox models are coming next year and they are finally going to do some higher end blade steel stuff also. Watch Jon Gadget's new video on his trip to Victorinox and there is a lot of information on it.

      Hi Tobias:
I’m with you on the leg knives. I can’t understand the desire for this pattern.
The tiny knives are quite beautiful but the size is simply too small for me. My idea of a tiny knife is the small Stockman at about three and a half inches. I carry those or a small Congress in my fifth pocket.
I do have an old Rough Rider RR427 Splitback Whittler three inch in red jigged bone which is an exception. I really like that one and sometimes carry it in a leather slip.
      The small sunfish…..not so much. 😊 ☀️ 🐠

small senators have traditionally been carried more than all of those combined and it's a shame that nobody produces them anymore and they were the epitome of small knives especially as a white collar carry knives. Don't get me started about lobster knives also and how everybody produced those also as white collar small knives and the 58mm SAK's are about the last of small lobster knives. Folding tactical knives have ruined the slip joint industry in general the last 40-ish years when they came on the market in the 80's

Well taste is a very varied thing I have one Tiny Toothpick made by Buck and it is very well made but I never carry it I just don't care for it, I have two Lady leg knives and really like them, could never find a single blade Peanut or I might have bought one two bladed ones don't appeal to me, not a fan of small frame knives, each to his own as the saying goes. 😁
