Rekordbox DJ Tip: How To Hook Up CDJs To Your Laptop In HID Mode

If you've been spinning with a laptop and a DJ controller, you may encounter situations where you're asked to play at a venue that doesn't have space in the DJ booth for any other gear apart from the CDJ / DJM set that it has. If you've got a tiny controller (like the DDJ-WeGo4) you may be able to squeeze your kit, but if you've got a bigger controller like the DDJ-RX or larger, you're going to run into logistical issues.
Instead of hauling a folding desk or bugging the bar staff for a cocktail table, you can still spin with your laptop using the CDJs. The CDJs essentially become your controller - this is known as HID Mode.
There are a bunch of ways to connect CDJs / XDJs to your laptop in HID Mode, and this video will cover off one of those ways.

Hey Joey, your tutorial really helped me when I moved onto a club set up from a bed room setup. However on the night itself, I had accidently selected deck 3 instead of 2 for my second CDJ, and that caused a lot of issues. How do i go about reconfiguring this without disconnecting the CDJ? I did this and the entire sound system shut down hahah thank god I had a usb in the 3rd CDJ

I got big problem and iam new to play with record box. so I got djm 900nexs and 2 cdj 850 and if I play usb on one cdj and plug in other cdj to laptop I can get it work but then when I stop playing on cdj which iam play with usb and plug this cdj in laptop I get no sound but if i load drivers again then i can get sounnd but music stops for a few seconds not good and so what must i do to go from playing usb to rekordbox and rekordbox back to usb

Hi Joey. You forgot to mention how to preview track on DJM from the playlist 😃
So, in Rekordbox you can set up playlist track preview by assigning Preview Output (in Preferences/Audio) for any the next available channel on DJM (exp. 3 or4) Also this channel input on DJM must be set up as USB. While previewing make sure the fader is down 😃
That didn't work for me. I have 2 CDJ's and an analog mixer. Rekordbox does recognize both CDJ's and I can select one or the other for Audio, not both. I can not get them to control rekordbox either via the link button.

you say that 3 usb cables are needed, in the video I only see 2 connected to the hub, which I suppose are those of the cdj-2000, and the one of the mixer I do not see it? Where do I connect it? to the hub? or the laptop?
doesn't care. You can put it also in the hub or direct to the laptop.
Also you don't need a powered hub. CDJ's and Mixers have there own power, a powered hub you just need when you use the hub for power, charger and transmission. Extra controller or effect units also better use with there own power. One RMX-1000 normally no problem.
A Pioneer RMX-1000 need ca.200mA power little more than a traktor control F1. Hardware is always better when they have there own power.
A usb2 hub with 500mA (USB3.0 900mA) just split the 500mA to all slots, a powered usb hub you have at every slot 500mA(900mA). For transmission you need just 1mA each unit for sent/return.
have you a link to audio driver for djm 900nx for MAC OS? I can't find it on rekordbox site

Question though, how would you go about setting up a b2b with another DJ that's using strictly USB flash drive on the CDJs whereas I'm using Rekordbox DJ on the Laptop? Would he connect his USB in the HUB; Does the physical display on CDJ mimic how it would show as if it was connected directly to the CDJs? Or, would he connect directly into the CDJ and ... ?

Hey Kodojak! Try this: He can plug his USB thumb drive into either CDJ, and you can connect your laptop using USB cables (if on a Mac, get the CDJ/XDJ Aggregator to make it easier).
Whenever it's time for you to spin, hit the "Link" button on the CDJ that you'd want to use (you'll be asked to select which Rekordbox DJ deck you'd want to control). When it's your partner's turn, she / he just presses the "USB" button on the CDJ he / she wants to use :)

Maybe your way is better, because when he's gonna play his last track on the deck 2, i could connect everything, do the setting on the Deck 1, and the channel 2. And do the Deck 2 and Channel 2 when he will stop his track.

You could connect Deck 1 and get it working with Rekordbox, play your first track there, then connect Deck 2 :) of course, this assumes that the CDJ you're using is updated / has the minimum firmware version to work with Rekordbox.

Hey Hal! You can just plug them into the powered USB hub which goes to your laptop :)

hello ...i just bought two xdj 700 can't connect via usb cable to my mac and rekordbox since when i press link function the player is not found . I have all the firmware updated ....audio on mac check and ok .....third part program authorised....nothing ...i used also aggregatore which work.....last ...i am using the free version and i have the impression the perf mode on record box vers 6.x.x is not allowed . What do you know ?

What's the difference between this & the LAN LINK ? I was under the impression that this was the Link feature (Hince previous question).
Hey Irving, HID lets you control DJ software (traktor, serato, rekordbox, virtual dj). LAN link lets you access music from a storage device (USB drive, laptop, etc) across multiple CDJs connected via LAN Link :)

Hello! I am having some problems with the connection with rekordbox, every time I push connect with the roll button it stands by just saying connecting but I couldn't select the deck after. What should be the problem? I have 2 CDJs 2000

You are using the free version of the software. You will need the paid version for performance upgrades. This was a major miss in this video

So I have my sound card plug to my PC, can I connect DJM900+cdj2000 to my computer and then have the sound comming from my PC? I only have one set of monitor and I don't want to unplug them all the time
If your DJM900 has a sound card (like the NXS models) then yes you can :)

Yes you'd be able to access hotcues and metadata because they're stored on the songs that are in your laptop :)

Please follow these instructions to get your DJM-900NXS2 operating properly:
1. Disconnect the DJM-900NXS2.
2. Download the driver.
3. Open the driver package and run the uninstaller file.
4. Reboot your computer.
5. Open the driver package and run the driver installation file.
6. After the installation has completed, give the drivers permission if necessary (High Sierra and Mojave).
7. Reboot your computer.
8. Connect the DJM-900NXS2 and test as normal.

i just bought the USB C to Printer from you guys, thinking it would fix my audio problems on my DJM 900 nexus and DJM 2000 nexus.
but when i record, my macbook 2018 pro still makes a static noise, it doesnt record.

What is main difference betwen this and ethernet link? I seen video with ethernet link to a laptop, and when playing just like hid..i didn't find any video where they talk about this 2 mode, one vs another
Ethernet Link basically lets you use your laptop as a hard drive (you can browse for tracks on the CDJs themselves)

Use the Record feature in Rekordbox DJ (Performance Mode) instead of the Record function in Export Mode :)

You can use connect the CDJs to your laptop and output through them so you don't have to connect your mixer :) if you're on a Mac, use the CDJ / XDJ Aggregator to connect the CDJs to your laptop

What happens when you scroll the Browse knob left or right? Do you see changes in the Deck number onscreen? :)

Some djs using hid mode but on player theres a usb stick what’s the use of the usb ? Confused
Maybe they have songs that are stored on the USB stick and not in their laptops? Or maybe as a backup in case the laptop fails :)
hi joey !! i am also using Rekordbox in hid mode . but this saturday i went to a club but the cdj 900 nexus connect properly with cdj agreegeter but No music output are coming from djm 900nxs 2 mixer ! i was using only two usb cable that time ! but in previous event i went to another club that club hv 2000nxs2 in that , but everything was connected properly with cdj xdj aggregater !!

Check your Rekordbox DJ settings if you've got the output selected to go out of the CDJ-900NXS :) you may also have to install a specific driver in your laptop to get the CDJ-900NXS working

I'm having problems getting the DJM900xs2 driver to show up on my CoreAudio section in Rekordbox's preferences on my Mac OS Mojave 10.14. 6. When I go to preferences and click on Driver then select and install DJM-900NXS2_M_2.0.2.dmg it says it installed successfully, but I don't see it in my CoreAudio to select it. Can you help me on this issue please? I'm using Rekordbox 5.7

@@digitaldjtips I finally managed to set it up and found out what my problem was. I found out that the driver for DJM900NX2.dmg didn't work with the mixer DJM900NX2, so for the sake of it I installed just to see if it would work DJM900NX.dmg and it worked! Not only did it work but when it was installed it showed up on the setup pannel that it's connected to the DJM900NX2! Really wierd that the driver DJM900NX2.dmg didn't work but the driver DJM900NX.dmg did work with the mixer DJM900NX2. Even after installing the DJM900NX.dmg it shows up in the preferences DJM900NX2!

HID has been around for a while now, but always a good idea to update your firmware regularly :)

They're just standard USB-A to USB-B cables (like the ones used on DJ controllers and printers) :)

You need to plug the RCA outputs of the CDJs to the inputs of the DJM mixer :) you then choose the CDJ/XDJ Aggregator in Rekordbox's preferences

Are you analysing your tracks in Rekordbox before using them on the CDJs?
I have this same problem. I get the wave at bottom of screen but not the main waveform. They're on the program though. I have 2000nxs. Not nxs2's
what about when the mixer isn't supported by rekordbox? can rekordbox aggregate the soundcards in the CDJs?
Yes you can :) there's a CDJ Aggregator Tool from Pioneer DJ that lets you configure it

muniek1983 make sure your laptop spec is up to scratch. Rekordbox requires minimum i3 processor 2ghz and 4gb ram. I struggled the same until I got a better laptop.

I have a pair of cdjs 900nxs ; i was about to buy a djm 450 mixer ; in order to have the same setup as you in here; but the guy at the shop told me i need to get the pioneer timecoded cds in order to control rekordbox from my cdjs .. so i m a bit lost .. so i didnt get the djm 450 mixer ( i wanted to get it cause i like it because of the fxs in it and the soundcard+ the rekordbox dj licence comes free with it ..)
So do i need these timecoded cds ..? Thanks a lot
Timecode is for DVS not HID mode so no they're not needed

why not using the CDJ soundcard ? No need a usb hub with that (unless you have less than 2 usb on your laptop)
You can do that too, using the CDJ Aggregator Tool if you're on a Mac :)
depends on your mixer. when you have a DJM900nxs2 and connect him also with usb to your mac then you have also quantize function between you CDJs. Means cue, hot cues, bpm, sync, master works like in the software. Also the effect unit become the bpm automatically.
At the usb hub you can also connect 4 CDJ and the RCA you don't need anymore.

I guess for backup reasons, if the laptop crashes. You really do not need the USB for HID mode

Yes you can! The laptop then just works as a hard drive :)
Yes you run rekordbox in Export mode and load tracks onto the players just like when using a USB stick. On nexus 2 decks you can you plug one USB cable into one of the decks and the tracks will be loadable for each deck. You also get an extra cue for previews. Check Mojaxx's video about Pro DJ link
What usb cables did you use for connection?
Just standard USB jacks :) if you're using a computer with a USB-C output, you want want to get a USB-C to USB-B (the square jack) cable

for hid mode the mixer is important. He must be connected to your rekordbox on your laptop. xdj 700 have a link function.
hid mode is the same when you link your players. The extra is to connect your mixer to the players and use your rekordbox library and bpm beat fx sync.
With hid mode your bpm is sync like when you just use link your players. But also your beat fx section at the mixer is bpm sync, you don't have this when your mixer is not connected. Also you don't need RCA (cinch) cable anymore to connect your players to the mixer. It all works digital with the switch. You also do not need a switch with power because the digital signal is so small. Power switches you just need when you use maybe effect units or other units who gets there power just via usb switch.
Players, mixers and also some effect units have there own power cable. Means only the small digital signal where sent via the switch. For just this small digital signals you don't need a powered switch.
For me that i use the HID mode is the biggest advantage to use the library when you play longer sets. You find easier songs on the big screen from your laptop.
HID mode without laptop i play for smaller 2h sets who are already prepared at my usb flash drive.

The club CDJs may be old, or not networked - DVS basically "always works". It's a universal fallback.

How a second dj can connect him laptop during a club event or smthing? with no music stop using this hid mode
You can plug in your laptop in the DJM900NXS2's USB jack and play music through it if you set your output right :) that will give you time to remove the USB cables and plug into your laptop, and then you can set the outputs to them one by one after.
You can also just play a song / mix from a thumb drive or CD on one of the CDJs (switch to line mode on the DJM mixer), and then remove the USB jacks from the previous DJ's laptop and move to yours!

Your mixer has a Record out, I'd buy something like the RODE SC4 and then download the DJM-REC app :)

Best bet would be to record the output of the mixer with something like MixBox Evermix.
