It's sad cause if a few of those men were left to guard his family. Telemachus and Penelope would've been (or had) protection. Not too mention Telemachus would have been trained since they (Odysseus' men) respect him so much.
That basically means that most the Suitors are either too young to have went to war with Ody, criminals who avoided recruitment, or foreigners. Which explains why they act so horribly entitled.
Most of the suitors are nobles of Ithaca. They didn't go to war, because they were too young to fight at the time, they were boys. But their older relatives did. One of the suitors is the little brother of one man in Odysseus's crew who lost his life in the sea.
6:08 Penelope is canonically in the myths considered to be attractive enough to be “nearly as attractive as” Helen of Troy (like she is considered a worthy choice after Helen). so yeah
I remember in the stories Odysseus got dragged into Troy war because he talking to Helen's father he'll convince people/suitors not to force Helen and accept her choice for husband if he gets to marry Penelope. The agreement that everyone goes to war if someone forcibly takes her... Then he got dragged into war because the agreement was his idea and a few years later Paris kidnapped Helen.
Athena is really interestingly characterized in this saga, because she's been 'offstage' since My Goodbye, but you can still kind of clock her whole arc in the meantime from her words and actions now. I like that while she has softened on some of the stuff that matters (both acknowledging Odysseus as her friend and missing him) she's still blunt as hell. "What do you mean, you don't know what to do? Punch him in the chin. Get his ass."
I don't know if you heard the demo but the line in we'd be fine is "You're my friend I couldn't ask for more :) " But it used to be "You're my friend I've never had before :') " Telemachus is just a lonely dude tryna protect his mom till his dad come home 😢
Also the bit that gets me about We'll Be Fine is how Telemachus, who Athena's known for all of like half an hour max afaik, goes 'You're my friend i couldn't ask for more!' and she DOESN'T CORRECT HIM. When Athena and Ody meet Ody does the exact same thing, goes 'goddess and man, bestest of friends' and she just shrugs it off with a 'we'll see where it ends' and even during My Goodbye when she's been training Ody for like a decade minimum, most likely longer, she shoots him down with a 'You're not looking for a mentor I'm not looking for a friend'. So her not correcting this over excited kid calling himself her friend is p huge for her, i think.
