- The Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building, a whimsical fortress on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., that has been vacant for nearly 20 years, is about to reopen to the public, just in time for the institution's 175th anniversary. CBS News national correspondent Chip Reid talks with the Secretary of the Smithsonian, Lonnie Bunch III; the building's director, Rachel Goslins; and architect-designer David Rockwell about the upcoming exhibition, "Futures" - and the history of a building designed to be ahead of its time.

We were in DC last month and got to walk past this beautiful building. So many of the museums were still closed to the public but I'm grateful we were able to go through the Museum of American History. Washington DC is an amazing place.
We went there in early-mid June of this year, for the first time in nine years, which was when I went there on a field trip in eighth grade. Until a "Circulator" operator mentioned it, I had never heard of this building or "The Castle", which was the very first museum of the Smithsonian to open. While we were there, we visited the "Museum of the American Indian" and the "National Gallery of Art", as many of the others had been booked a month in advance or weren't open yet at that time. As of now, I've visited four out of the nineteen museums of the Smithsonian Institute, as I visited the Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of Natural History in eighth grade, albeit on the morning of the last day of the trip before we had to return home. From what I remember, the Air and Space Museum is reopening sometime in this month, but I'm not sure about the other one.
I am one of those lucky humans that was born, and still lives in the suburban DC metro area. Hanging out in its museums was just a part of life and I have enjoyed it so much. The pandemic has kept me away from those treasures for over a year now and I must admit that between the pandemic and all of the civil unrest, (and my aging psyche) everything seems tainted to me now and I've lost my appetite for downtown DC which I had loved so much. Seeing this video, though, may have jolted something pre-pandemic in me. I would love to see that Futures exhibit. Get back to normal and not be uncomfortable about crowds which not only never bothered me before, but I actually found as interesting as the exhibits. I hope that I can come around....,
I love this building. I live in DC, and remember when it temporarily housed the Air and Space Museum while that was being designed and built. A&I is like something out of a Victorian carnival in England, and fantastic. It’s far more architecturally interesting than its next door neighbor, the Castle, which is the hallmark of the Smithsonian and houses Administration. It also has some lovely gardens.
Edited to add: No, this building isn’t great design, and my personal esthetic runs towards contemporary architecture, but sometimes the best buildings are the ones that make our hearts happy and show their humanity. You can’t help but view Arts and Industries, inside and out, with joy and a smile.
My favorite one on the Mall!
In the early 60s there was a room in The Castle solely dedicated to WWI aviation dioramas that lined all four walls. They were marvelous.
THE WONDERS AT THE SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM ARE SO MARVELOUS , IT MAKES ME CRY !!
I'm glad to see the reopening of the Art & Industries Building. I saw an exhibit there for the 100th Anniversary of the 1876 Centennial Exposition. I hope these kind of exhibits will return.
SMITHSONIAN Magazine was housed in this building when I worked there 1980-1986. I loved exploring throughout that old building. I didn't know it had been vacant for the last 20 years. I'm sure the renovations have made it a spectacular sight!
I haven’t been to the Smithsonian in almost 25 years. I have a 9 yr old and a 6 yr old that I want to take a trip to the nation’s capital and show them all the amazing museums and monuments we are so lucky to have. Going to have to make that a priority before they become teenagers and are more interested in their phones instead of the world going on around them. 😂
Beautiful building
God bless those historians and administrators whose hard work bring these jems back to life. We all benefit from education and understanding of ALL our nation's historic events.
This is so exciting! ❤
Adolf Cluss is the arthitect of this bldg and he's one of the best in DC during the time he lived. Many great bldgs built by him
Beautiful
Why do you believe they are "hiding" anything? Yes, there are MANY items they don't have the space or need to show to the public...but why do you believe they are hiding anything?
There is a huge Smithsonian warehouse in suburban Maryland, if that's what anyone means about "hiding."
I really like Sunday morning!!!
Its my favorite building at smithsonian. The collections inside were the best. It was the entire 1876 Centenial Collection. They should have never closed it and dispersed the collection the way they did. When they did that I never returned. That building and the collection was a time machine of America. Non better anywhere else. It should have been left alone forever. They ruined the Smithsonian for me when they closed its doors.
❤
May I use some of this video (just a few seconds) to add to my video as a visual illustration entitled "THESE ARE 8 MOST EXPENSIVE COINS IN THE WORLD", I will include the source of this video in the video and the video description on credit.

Why is an OWL SCULPTURE on the roof?
These magnificent buildings, such as the Smithsonian Castle were amongst thousands of PRE-EXISTING buildings that were merely re-discovered by the Europeans who came to America and calaimed what they FOUND as their own. The term FOUNDED merely means that someone FOUND IT. In fact, there is a memorial plaque near the entrance which states the this castle was FOUNDED-BY, James Smithson, who, as the plaque states DIED in Italy in 1829, Smithson DIED, EIGHTEEN YEARS BEFOREthe U.S. alleges that groundbreaking construction for this castle BEGAN in 1847. Our history is a LIE!

Such a beautiful bulding
I want to see the things they are hiding and lying about still a beautiful building tho
They aren’t “hiding” anything. That museum was stuffed with stuff like lighthouse lamps. All of which was put in storage for 20+ years. I went there as a kid, and it was like spending the afternoon in your eccentric great-auntie’s attic.
@@tananario I'm talking about Smithsonian in general. You might want to do your homework they are hiding tons.
@@marvelousmitch972 oh you mean all that X-FILES S**T???
Insipid and overwrought presentation.
Is it exhausting to be so jaded and arrogant ? Grab the latest hot microbrew , listen to some music from a band nobody has heard of, and spare us your self-congratulatory ennui.
