Nick's use of words to create a team atmosphere is very smartly curated. From his preparation phases to his races like Leadville, he never uses terms like "Me" or "I," He always uses words like "BPN Team" and "We." He knows and credits his support system very well, and it seems like people at BPN and viewers on this platform notice and respect him for it
i don't like that he doesn't give credit to other athletes though. it's all about him and his relatively mediocre sports achievement - you'd think he'd won the events rather than coming mid to low range in the results. his cycling ability is pretty poor, his running ability is good amateur but not great. he does well and he's dedicated but he's not doing anything ground breaking or even above a local club athlete.
I absolutely love Coach Jeff. Even with the limited video time he is such a motivator. I too will be running the Buffalo Marathon. First ever full marathon with goal of 3:59:59.
I have my first half coming up in a 25 days. The most I have done is 10 mles a couple of weeks ago. I appreciate all the info and tips here. Still in my first year of running at the age of 42.... NEVER GONNA STOP
@@TheBowman5 lol. False. I find people usually claim Garmin is off, because they are embarrassed how low their actual vo2max is. Remember, Garmin has an advantage of constant readings 24 hours a day. Great video! Always inspirational to see the running clips and training philosophies, but this was a phenomenal source of knowledge to utilize and consider when it comes to my own running!
This information you guys are utilizing but also presenting to your viewers is so clutch! I’m incredibly intrigued by RunLab as I feel I could greatly benefit from some run/form/mechanics analysis!
@nickbare thanks for explaining the science in lactate threshold and V02 max! And showing that easy runs done over a period of time build the body up and get it ready for anaerobic speed. We’d love to know how your V02 max from the lab compared to what your watch said. Thanks for sharing this journey with us!
I'd be curious to know how far off the Garmin Threshold test with the HR chest strap was to the lab. For those of us without access to a lab or cost prohibitive
I’m just making an assumption but I feel as if the readily available consumer devices that many of us have now a-days can be relatively accurate. I think the difference falls with in the abilities for those targeted companies and professions to be able to analyze that information and present it in a way that their clients can understand and significantly benefit from. I know it varies significantly per person, but this type of work and info is amazing to me. I’m extremely thankful for the direction this channel is going!
5K pace is way faster that tempo pace. For a trained person tempo pace would be between 10K-15K race pace. For an elite athlete, close to HM (1 hour of sustained effort).
Great insight as always! Threshold pace based on lactate is the best way to set your training paces and was on point, Vo2max was estimated so it’s not a precise data, you should do the test with the proper mask to know exactly your value. Regarding Training you only need threshold based on lactate but for your own flex and to see what is your maximum power/horse power should be good to do a proper vo2max test at your peak, for sure the number will be above that 59💪
Hi Nick, Huge fan. I was wondering what your VO2 Max looks like now that you have finished the marathon compared to when you filmed this video? I am running in the Mountains 2 Beach Marathon in Ventura California this weekend and have been using your Marathon Prep series to structure some of my training / nutrition / recovery. Thanks!
Hey Nic, interested to see what your results were for your Vo2 Max, had you done a comparison against the garmin test through your watch, and how did your heart rate zones differ from this test from where you were before! Thanks man!
Hey nick, any chance you could talk more about the leg length difference and 1 sided hip tightness. Curious how your going about addressing those issues. I've noticed my right femur is slightly longer than the left in workouts/mobility work lately, as well my right hip is tighter than the left in assessments of movements. Still figuring out what works for me
Amazing work Nick! I am with you. We are at the same age and we both are gonna be fathers this year :D Pls, could you share what was your predicted VO2max and Lactate Threshold by Garmin app. I have noticed you run with HRM chest strap. Is there any garmin numbers closed to reality? Thanks
4:45 Walks into treadmill room with shirt on .... suddenly (though not surprising) shirt is off! But by god I was shocked and amazed at 17:45 that he actually kept his shirt on (even his jacket) ... must have been really cold! - Note: plenty of elite athletes have imbalanced running gaits (both men and women) but they are still capable of running low 2H marathons. They have never felt the need to fix it and even if they did, it wouldn't necessarily equate to faster times.
Have you ever thought about the effects highly acidic fuel sources like carbs may have on lactic acid processing? Could getting a bit more alkaline effect any of that stuff?

9:25 If someone had a Vo2Max of 58 mL/kg/min while being sedentary they would be the most genetically gifted god out there. I have a hard time understanding how different life would be if I had the energy that comes with a Vo2 of 58, but without spending all my time and energy training just to maintain that. I think you should have used two athletes, one achieved his Vo2Max of 58 by doing hooooours of Zone 2, while the other achieved his Vo2Max of 58 by doing mostly Zone 4/5 anaerobic work - like Crossfit for example. That would have been way, way, way, way, way more realistic, and would have better shown the difference between Vo2Max and Anaerobic Threshold.
Would really like some balance with the volume of the music and the rest of the video. The music is way too loud compared to the rest of the video. No need to blow ears out.
