    The very nature of gospel music is free and moved by the spirit. We believe that Mr. Hogan would've enjoyed this as much as our audiences all over the world did and would not be nearly as worried about a few different notes/rhythms or our skin color as so many commentors on UA-cam are. Music (especially gospel/spiritual music) is about so much more. This was a very heart felt performance and we feel the original message/feeling of the piece was delivered, even with a few "unnecessary" changes.

    This choir did a fantastic job generally speaking. I like the opening solo's. Conductor's drive me crazy changing the ethos and mournful quality of the ending. That makes this piece unique and makes the simplicity of Moses' Hogan's ending stand out among concert spirituals. I suggest conductor's think about scoring their own arrangement as opposed to changing someone else's.

    Genius writing on the part of moses hogan! He was so very good at painting a picture musically within the text as it is so evident on the phrase "cant you feel it moving" and how the upper parts dp malismatic passages painting the picture of wind blowing like the spirit.JUST GENIUS I TELL YOU! and it was exhibited well with this fine choir!

    Three things I wanna say:
    1) I sang this during my freshman year of college, and it was so much fun! Great piece!
    2) That same year our college went on a music tour (band went with the choir). The band hadn't heard this piece before, but after they did hear it they raved about it. They thought "Oh my Jesus" sounded like "Oh my Cheez-Its"... and one band member went so far as to buy a box of Cheez-Its and have the kids on the band bus sing about the Cheez-Its to this song. IT WAS HILARIOUS!!!
    3) Is it just me, or did the lady with the short red hair on the bottom left side of the right block of people wake up when the choir started the "Shout" verse? Take a look (2:11).
    Again, great piece :)

    This was a pretty good rendition of the song. I'd never heard it sung quite like this.
    Ps: Solo-soprano-singer-lady did really good on those high notes!!! Those particular notes, if not approached correctly, could cause one's voice to crack and go out for a couple days; but she did really great.

Well, not really cried, but tears came out. Haha. It was powerful and full of emotion. >.< amazing interpretation!

    And as a sop. 1 who has sung this, I can say that it is incredibly hard to blend when singing a Bb or a C above the staff. The only "improvable" thing I noticed was the sfp attack at the end. This choir's performance was fantastic.

    First off I want to say that the choir did an amazing job. Point #1 no one can speak for Moses Hogan because first off he is deceased and therefore no one knows what he might of said about them having changes added to this piece. Point#2 Stop riding them and appreciate them. I don't understand why people have so much negative things to say all the time. The defintion of a spiritual is pertaining to the spirit or soul. Gospel is a form of spiritual music rooted in the solo and responsive church.

    I was trained by Mr. Hogan and have two aunts that were in the original Chorale as well. I have to disagree. I think that the ending was very much in keeping with his other arrangements and the overall style that he has become famous for. While I prefer the original arrangement (especially on "sing till-my-Jesus" of the last line)- I do not feel that this was so far off as to deserve the criticism shown on this page.

    @dimensionalharmony10 That's the written tempo, actually. My choir recently started working on this song.
    The soprano really wasn't that bad, and in fact did a great job for the highness of those notes.
    Also, if you didn't like the way those soloists did the intro, you'd hate the way Hogan's choir sings his other works.
    (And one more thing: "the tenors and sopranos need jesus." Because apparently jesus is the only thing that could make this choir sound better to you. Ha.)

    I wish the bass's solo after the first verse moved a little more. It was very monodynamic. With this song, the spirit needs to move, so how is the spirit going to mover is the words dont? Hypothetically speaking.

  • @JMountainPlace

    The original ending is rather subdued, and would be a perfect segue into another more hushed Moses Hogan setting, say, Lord I Want To Be A Christian. These changes to the ending are great for a concert closer, and I like them for that reason. The comments suggesting these changes don't "fit" the style (too "white?") are the same arguments I have heard about Hogan's settings: that they are more concert arrangements than the original style of spirituals a century ago. It's a matter of taste.

    This version is not by Moses Hogan. I was honored of being in the presence of Moses Hogan and he would roll over in his grave right now if he heard this grotesque version of his song. i actually sang this song with the LA All-State choir under his conduction. I don't thin he'd appreciate the changes this chorale made.

    • @CharlieNme11
      @CharlieNme11 7 років тому +7

      I agree with Maxwell, and I'm so sick of people claiming to know what this or that dead composer would or would not have approved of, from Bach to Hogan. If you didn't like this interpretation, fine, keep scrolling, but I think what would REALLY make Moses Hogan "roll over in his grave" is knowing that people like you who were "in his presence once" are making such bold assumptions and judgements on his behalf. The beginning and end are a little different than what is written but the song itself is ABOUT singing the way the spirit moves you to and the spirit of the piece is completely intact! I'll tell you what Moses Hogan would've loved, and that's the way this performance of his music thrilled and moved hundreds and hundreds of audience members in the 8 different countries it was performed in live and hundreds of thousands here on UA-cam as well. I was in this choir and it was an audience favorite all over Eastern Europe and everywhere we toured that month! Oh and an international panel of judges agreed because we won an international competition as well. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, just make sure it's YOUR opinion you're sharing and not someone who is dead who you don't know and who hasn't given you power of attorney to speak for them. Also, "conduction" is only a real word when talking about Physics.

    • @booduh11811
      @booduh11811 7 років тому

      Too bad you simpleminded asshats don't know what good music is anyways, oh and conduction is not the only word used in physics....Im so sick of all these grammar nazi's who takes life on youtube way too serisouly. sorry i offended all you Hillart and Trump supporters up in this bitch. • @CharlieNme11
      @CharlieNme11 7 років тому +2

      I really don't understand why this went from a simple disagreement about a musical interpretation to nasty name calling, foul language slinging and even bringing politics into the mix! I was not rude at all! You would do well to learn to have disagreements in a civilized manner. This kind of response is a sign of immaturity. I'm sorry I corrected your word. That was unnecessary. But I stand by my comment. It's absolutely fine that you don't like this video and felt like saying so, but don't speak for Moses Hogan, and if you think you can do so much better, LET'S SEE IT! Where are YOUR amazing videos!? Or are you one of the many millions of UA-camrs who, instead of putting in the time, effort, expense and showing the kind of vulnerability it takes to produce and put their art out there for the whole world to judge, just spends their time criticizing what other artists post instead?

    • @Wahiahi
      @Wahiahi 7 років тому +4

      David Lacap Are you kidding? Composers don't make their songs the way they are and expect people to sing it 100% exactly the way it's written. The creativity that was produced and the way they slightly made it their own would make Hogan more than happy that his beautiful work was sang so wonderfully. You spoke of others taking UA-cam seriously but you did exactly the same. Even when you said that they should have scrolled on, you should have just went on about your day without commenting something so rude
