Really enjoy your videos Matt. I love these Non-League grounds they seem to be so full of character unlike the modern day stadiums & it's amazing what you can come across on your travels. I have no interest in the Premiership anymore & it's always a local Non-League team for me on a Saturday afternoon.....I've even started writing match reports for a football magazine which I find makes the games more interesting! Keep up the great work & good luck to the Gills 👍👍
Thanks for your comment, really appreciate them. You are part of a growing band of people liking non-football. What football magazine do you write for?
@@mattthegroundhopper9242 I write for The Football Pink magazine. It focuses on Northeast Non-League football starting with Hartlepool Utd in the National League & down as far as the Westside League. I also have started a Facebook group too! Football doesn't have to be all about the glamour & all seater state of the art stadiums, like you I'm a bit of a traditionalist & love exploring new grounds & supporting local football. I've left a couple of links below 👍👍
@@mattthegroundhopper9242I write for The Football Pink which is based in the Northeast & focus from Hartlepool Utd in the National League down to the Wearside League. They have brought it back in a physical form for the first time in over 30 years.....do you remember the old Sports results gazette that would come out at 6.00 on a Saturday evening before we had mobile phones & computers? I also have a Facebook group too.

Just looked them up 👍🏻⚽️
Been keeping checking all day for this video to drop, glad you finally put it out, quality as always fella
Thanks Stephen, damn work just gets in the way 👍🏻⚽️
Great video as usual Matt, and very interesting. Brave man getting wet on a tuesday night on the coast. Dont know whats happening to Chatham this season, with all those ex professionals, including ex Gills players. Had to laugh as you showed that old yellow Rover. Looked like the car i had back in 1982. Sold it to my old dad, and he said i had sold him a death trap lol. Couldnt do anything about it, as i had just been posted to Gibraltar. Gave him his money back if i remember, and it ended up at that tip in Hastings lol. Must have been ther 40 years. Good luck at Crewe on saturday. We need to make up for that blip on tuesday night also
Thanks Berlin Dave, I always look out for your comments and they always make me chuckle. I had a feeling that car was yours because in the top of the windscreen it had the sticker Dave loves Pam 4ever :)
Found this video today as about the Pilot Field where I have watched football since 1959, but less this century as living elsewhere. Really enjoyed it! Let's get at the back catalogue. When I lived in the W Midlands in the 70s I was often at The Villa, but the Premier League is not my game any more. Ardent supporter of the original Hastings United (which folded in 1985) and saw games at grounds from Merthyr Tydfil to Wisbech and from Yeovil to Burton-on-Trent. That's real football. A couple of points about the Pilot Field....one reason why the pitch is a bit further from spectators is because there was a perimeter speedway track there in the very old days. Also there was another stand at the Elphinstone Road end with an earth floor, but that was dismantled in the 70s. And as for the grassy bank, in the days before Health & Safety, that was packed with people (including me), especially in the better weather.
Thanks Roger for your comments and your memories 👍🏻 I had a feeling it may have previously hosted a speedway track due to the oval shape, just cannot beat non league football and these weird and wonderful grounds 👍🏻⚽️
Reason I like your channel & subscribed, you are a realist when it comes to your videos & don’t use them clickbait words & do say as you see & do show what is reality of some of these grounds, things you wouldn’t see in other channels, like your cars & tip at this ground
Thanks Stephen, this is why I like visiting old grounds because there are always odd things to report on which sometimes gives me more questions than answers
The old ground of St Leonards Stamco was just above it at the Firs above that banking. Think once they were the towns highest placed team reaching the Southern League in 1996/97 finishing runners up to Forest Green Rovers before going out of existence in 2003/04. The ground was originally used by Hastings Town until they moved into the Pilot Field after the original United folded.
I wonder if those St Leonard’s fans started supporting Hastings after they folded 🤔
@mattthegroundhopper9242 it was originally a works team and funded. I don't think they got good gates. Bit like RS Southampton in the 80's. I believe some of St Leonards Stamcrofts ground is still there.
Great vlog as usual.. love these non league ones. A fantastic insight into football at this level that would otherwise never be seen!
Thanks Fred, I just love reporting on weird and wonderful things around the football grounds. The problem is as I'm looking for these things I tend to miss the goals for the channel!
Cracking video once again Matt and thank you, really appreciate the shoutout !
Finalist! 🤯
No problem Chris, happy to help 👍🏻⚽️
Keep up the good work Gaz
Much appreciated, thanks for your comments!
Nice one Matt, I love your style, just what the game and venue are about, I've just started my own doing my local clubs at first which I must admit was inspired by yourself and one or two others, very early days yet, lots to learn isn't there? Remember going to Hastings with Yeovil years ago, decent ground.
Thanks for your comments and your compliments. What is the name of your own channel, I'll look you up.
@@mattthegroundhopper9242 Tim's Ground Travels, literally only done three vlogs on my local clubs in Dorset so far, few mistakes but guess that's how you learn.
well done Tim for starting a channel, I’ve just checked out your Gillingham Town video 👍🏻 I wouldn’t worry about the mistakes, I’m always doing them 👍🏻⚽️
And I remember going with Hastings to Yeovil in 1972, when it was still the original sloping Huish - that was real character.
Hi Matt, that was game 126 in a row in league and cups that I've seen with Chats and I have to say it was by far our worst performance in that time. Chatham Town were still in the SCEFL when I last missed a competitive first team game. Still onwards and upwards.
I too really like your videos, even when Chatham lose. Regarding your lack of clickbait, I loved your reference to Aveley and theft the other week before showing the Gravesham Borough Council bins in the ground. So even your jokey clickbait intro to that video wasn't actually clickbait. I didn't realise you were at the game until someone mentioned it afterwards otherwise I'd have come and said hello.
That part condemned stand at Hastings dates from 1922 or 1923. They were looking to move to a new ground, but it has fallen through so they are having to patch up/close parts of the ground to keep it open. I think part of the problem with the proposed new ground was its capacity. Starting slightly earlier than Chats, Hastings' crowds went up massively a few years back. The proposed new stadium wouldn't have had a large enough capacity to deal with crowd spikes for certain games.
Re the award nominations, I was a little disappointed that you weren't nominated. If you get a minute in your next video could you also please mention Punjab United? I think they are in the 'best non league' category. Their output has been brilliant since a then 14 or 15 year old started watching them when locked out of Ebbsfleet United during covid. He never went back to Ebbsfleet and is now part of the set up at Punjab. I also voted for Through the turnstiles and Stuntpegg. Her videos are always entertaining.
Thanks for your comments, really appreciate them and well done seeing the chats in all those continuous games home and away, true ground hopping. Do you add the games into Futbology??
@@mattthegroundhopper9242 cheers, yes I use Futbology and a spreadsheet.
Loving that executive box...... Could you do Coke per ML and Mars? Finally, I prefer to look at an old Stadium/Stand/Ground but I prefer to be located in and watch football from a modern Stadium/Stand/Ground
Coke per millilitre, christ that really would put people off watching the channel! I completely get where you're coming from, wooden benches are not the most comfortable to sit on during the game!
Absolutely love the look of that ground. Definitely on my to-do list. Great video as ever, much prefer the non league vlogs 😁
Thanks Phil, is well worth a visit 👍🏻⚽️
What a ground
Blast from the past of a ground 👍🏻⚽️
@@mattthegroundhopper9242 Southend comes to mind on a cold Tuesday night a few years ago
I prefer old stands. I also prefer terracing. I liked standing up. More people packed in and better atmosphere. Maybe that's why I prefer lower league football now. That and the crazy prices at big clubs has got out of hand.
I prefer the older grounds because it helps me reminisce on old footballing times 👍🏻⚽️
Gutted coke & mars again, is a important part of your vids, always interested seeing the difference in prices at various grounds
Thanks Stephen, I'm hopefully going to Crewe on Saturday and hopefully, fingers crossed they do sell bottles of Coke and Mars and they can be slipped into my league tables :)
Matt If you were a racehorse, they would call you Master Rambler 😅😅
But it makes your vids more interesting tbh …never seen an old sofa behind a goal before 😂😂 seen lots of rubbish on the pitch over years tho
Keep em coming please …weekend ritual for me now …
Thanks, Jeremy and I'm glad I'm part of your weekend plans, never been called a racehorse before :)
Being at Hastings more like a beach donkey 😅 ,keep up the good blog and humour facts and sights.UTG from down under.
yep a proper old school ground much more appealing than the souless new ones... well done matt
Thanks Clive, the old non-league grounds just give me plenty of material to observe and report on
I remember my Son telling me what ` Limbs ` meant 🤔
Ha ha, that is now starting to show your age, just like me :)
Think they are knocking their ground down in a few years and turning it into a housing estate. Hastings moving to a new stadium, but council not in support of a football club. Which is a shame. Looks like Chatham in a relegation battle.
I’m hoping Chatham are not in a relegation battle, they were my pre-season favourite tip to get promoted 🤔
I think that's off the agenda, sadly. When the Council turned down the new ground it wasn't long before the property developer owners moved out...
Enjoy your shows matt 😂
Thanks Ray, appreciate your comments and your support
First Gillingham game of season well Tickets are no longer bus ticket and the gills lose just typicial of Gillingham. My food was from the local Corner shop on Canadian Avenue just up road from The Gordon Road stand.Bottle of coke and lionbar and snickers.Worst click bait crowd trouble and the lowest of low Hooligans
Thanks Matt, that was an unfortunate game to pick for your first game of the season with a surprise home defeat to Grimsby!
Love non league football much better than premier league 😂😂
I think the grounds are more interesting in non league because they haven't been upgraded for many years giving them plenty of character
