    This is awesome :) I am planning a backpacking trip for August and there are not many videos on vegan backpacker meals! I am new to this and this really helps!

      In a couple weeks I am going to do a series of videos about simple things you can do with a dehydrator. They key for me is not putting it away :) If I keep it on the counter I use it a lot....until my wife declares that she is tired of it on the counter :) My dehydrator was a $40 open box special that has worked out great.

      The blueberries and chia seeds are great, and then you can just add anything else you'd like. I think the one in the video has cashews and sunflower seeds too.

    Fellow vegan here and wannabe thru hiker. This is such a smart hiking meal plan! I love that you made it cold soak, too. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. ☮️

    Would love to see how to make the "all nutrition cookies" that you said aren't on your channel yet. I would also be interested in learning about how to make the blueberry leather. (And, actually, any of the recipes you care to share!!) Did you just dehydrate canned jackfruit? Thanks for all of these ideas, it is always good to get some healthier ideas for on the trail!

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  4 роки тому +4

      There is a video for one of the three cookies on the channel already and they are the best :)
      I start with the canned Jackfruit, add the spices, the hummus and dehydrate. The hummus happened quite by accident. I had always wanted to try and dehydrate it and one day my wife had extra on her plate from dinner along with some left over humus. I mixed the two together and it as great. The video for this would probably have to say vegan pulled pork :) I am going to do a series of food videos in July and will add the Jackfruit as one of them.

    Wow!...I've seen some videos where fellow vegans post about what they will eat (usually regarding thru hikes), but this is by far the healthiest vegan hiking meal plan I've seen! (Well, unless you have wheat issues.) ... Do you take this same care for your meals at home? (That question was really irrelevant to the topic, but just wondering if you are this thorough about daily eating at home.)

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  4 роки тому +1

      No wheat in any of the meals, and gluten free oats :) and yes, I eat pretty much the same stuff at home, just with a whole lot more greens. I am a big fan of the smoothie! Actually, the only thing in this menu that I rarely eat at home are the tortillas. I totally forgot they had flour. Didn't even think of it because that is just a backpacking only thing that gets purchased. We do have a variety of gluten-free, flour free tortillas that we would normally eat as a family. And I honestly can't remember the last time there was a pita in the house! I asked my daughter to get some tortillas for me and she said that was the only thing they had that was close to it left in the store.

    I don't know if nuts are vegan, but I usually bring a 1 pound bag of Pecan halves which gives me 600 of my daily calories for 5 days. At 200 calories per ounce, they are the highest calorie density food I have found and are mostly protein, fat, and high fiber. Walnuts are close at 3000 calories per pound.

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  2 роки тому

      Yep, nuts are definitely vegan :-) as long as they're not wrapped in bacon!

    So I hit your channel by accident. Whole food vegan no added fat or sugar is my thing. So do you dehydrate or buy tomato powder and all that stuff, cause it looks like I'm doing this the hard way. I make chilli, Spanish rice, or whatever to dehydrate dinner, carry wraps for lunch, and soak the oatmeal breakfast. My grandkids (11 and under not vegan because of dad) loves to go vegan backpacking with me. So in fixing for 2 kids that need to carry their own food.

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  3 роки тому

      I'm pretty sure this is the only meal on the entire Channel which I had some stuff that I dehydrated. I do buy tomato powder dehydrated, no way it's even close to being worth to doing that myself.

    Can you share where you get the powdered tomato powder and the sloppy joe mix you use? Loved this video - it is so great to see how you really plan and pack your food - I'd love this sort of meal plan on the trail. I don't have a dehydrator yet but man this video has me thinking I really do need to take the plunge on a small one.

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  2 роки тому +1

      I don't remember what tomato powder was. Not committed to just one brand, and even right now in the house it's put into the generic jars to hold it instead of keeping it in the original bag. I don't get it very often, you really don't need that much recipe. Same with the sloppy joe mix, I just pick up whatever I find in a store. I literally just cleaned out my backpacking food box last weekend and threw out the sloppy Joe mix since I had used half the bag a while ago and the rest was getting pretty old so I can't go and look at that brand for you either.

    I am ready to try some of this stuff, but I have a question about greens. There are no greens in any of this?

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  4 роки тому +2

      Some greens in the muffins/cookies, and instead of greens there's lots of fruit throughout, this was more of a quickly thrown together meal plan, but even in my other more thought out meal plans you can get all the nutrition, fiber, vitamins and minerals, without all the greens for backpacking. And if you really want to go greens, doing some powdered greens is an easy thing to do.

    Hi Paul, Thank you for another highly informative and inspiring backpacking food video! You might consider filing some of these ideas away in a document for a future recipe book. I would definitely be interested, just to have all of this information in a single easy to access place. I keep learning new things from your videos. We have been playing with soy curl recipes here thanks to one of your past videos. I hope you had/have a wonderful trip. I'm still hoping the backcountry opens around here for overnights so I can get out. I've got a sheet of silicone coming in a few days to try to make a gasket between the lid and pot of one of my titanium pots to maybe be able to rig it up with rubber bands or compression straps holding it together for a metal cold soak container. I'll let you know if I figure out something that works.
    All the best, Scott

    • @PaultheBackpacker

      The lid doe not have to be "airtight." Using a jar with a lid is something I just started doing in the last couple of years. Usually it was just a bowl. Now of course a bowl does not give you the option of soaking things as you come into or leave camp :) I actually have pushed my trip back a few days. It was just too hot and buggy and the weather seems like it will break soon. The heat is one thing that I don't like but can deal with, it is the deer flies right now. If I leave my little front yard where there are trees as soon as I get to tree cover I can't go any further without a head covering. They are big nasty things that hurt! Google Deer Fly Tape :) Hoping by putting off the trip a few days the cooler night temps might help with the flies.
