- On the eve of the anniversary of Sinatra’s 100th birthday (Dec 12) and with a new look and introduction Pete Hamill evokes the essence of Sinatra in Why Sinatra Matters examining his art and legend from the inside, as only a friend of many years could do.
Shaped by Prohibition, the Depression and war, Francis Albert Sinatra became the troubadour of the 20th Century enabling millions of others to tell their own stories through his songs. Hamill enlightens us about this enormously talented and often controversial figure who was a man of his time. Writer and Radio host Jonathan Schwartz who for decades has been radio’s foremost explicator of Frank Sinatra and was acknowledged by Sinatra himself to be his best-informed fan, joins him in conversation.

The first time I heard Johnathan Schwartz' voice when I was a toddler on 1130 AM WNEW I was immediately transfixed,a voice that made me feel safe amidst a childhood of chaos. One of my influences in wanting to be a radio guy. Pete was and always will be my favorite author. Unfortunately,by the time I realized that,he had passed on. I will always wish I could've met him just once.
Listening to this is like listening to summer wind... wonderful 😀
Met Pete at a book signing at Coliseum Books for Why Sinatra Matters, when it was first published. A real gent. Rest in Peace and tell Frank hello for me.
My friend and musician Larry Feintuck always said it was too bad Sinatra never recorded "Lush Life" and we both heard Jonathan play the verse Sinatra sang on Jonathan's radio show that Larry always listened to as did I. We listened to his WNEW AM radio show and then his 92.Y FM radio show later on. And as a matter of fact we might both have a copy of that session as we both sometimes recorded Jonathan's radio program with our portable audio cassette recorders.
Fantastic interview, wish there was some talk about Gordon Jenkins who always gets overlooked for Riddle
Hamill was a hero of mine, even when I disagreed with him, I knew he was coming from a good place.
I can listen to him in these taped interviews and read his books all day. He was talented and real. Schwartz is something else altogether. So obnoxious and phoney.
How very appealing is your generosity of spirit, sir.
Thank you for uploading this Valuable and extremely interesting exchange!
Mr. Pete Hamill will always be my Hero.
I appreciate Pete Hamill's and Jonathan Schwartz's appreciation of Frank Sinatra (as I do but I do not appreciate all of Pete and Jonathan's political views if not most of their political views as they do not change with the changing times as they should! They're too set in their ways) Frank Sinatra is truly one of the greatest artist/singers of the 20th Century.
Schwartz told a story about when the circus came to town and had to get to msg by crossing 10th Avenue which caused a traffic jam which got worse when an elephant sat on a Volkswagen
SCHWARTZ WONT LET HAMILL GET A WORD IN. JESUS CHRIST.
15:00 "I failed Geometry - - because it had no story!"
I had a missed Farrow marriage
MR SINATRA did not like JOANITHIN SCHWARTZ, he played un released SINATRA recordings n was told to stop but kept on playing ,so he was writefully blackballed .
People become slow as they are old. Do it when you are young.
Do what? You can't be young and know history first hand, alas. But, truly, you have no heart. I like their slow, slightly fumbling delivery.
Scwartz is a jerk.
Johnathan Swartz is not a SINATRA FAN or a SINATRA PERSON he is just a person who tells stories that he heard n l nows nothing about SINATRA , n he should have been black balled, he knows what he said n done about MR. SINATRA 😢 SHAME ON YOU!!!😢😢😢
Schwartz is not a good guy , under any circumstance
Schwartz was/is a dushe and one can tell by watching him. Not a nice man at all.
