    This is very similar to another scheduling controversy involving another Seattle team in the Sounders of MLS in 2010. The Sounders in the middle of September had not one not two not three but four different games on the road in two different competitions in that time period. To kick things off, the Sounders had to travel to San Jose Costa Rica to play Saprissa in the CONCACAF Champions League. The Sounders then had to fly 7 hours north to play Columbus in MLS. After that they had to fly to Mexico to play Monterrey in another CONCACAF Champions League match. Then to finish it off, the Sounders had to fly to Chicago to play the Fire in another MLS match. This totals 9171 miles across three different countries & multiple time zones. All of this travel took place within an 11 day time period & unlike the Seahawks in this situation, the Sounders had to remain on the road to make sure they got to each destination on time, meaning the players & coaches could not go home. As for how the Sounders did on this cross continental trip they lost 2-0 to Saprissa, thrashed Columbus 4-0, lost a heart breaker 3-2 to Monterrey after leading 2-0 at halftime & beat Chicago 1-0 on a last minute goal. After Sounders coach Sigi Schmid complained bitterly about this travel schedule, MLS & CONCACAF adjusted their schedules so that MLS clubs participating in the CONCACAF Champions League had at least 4 days between playing a Champions League match & an MLS one & the MLS clubs would have a home match to prevent this scenario from happening again.

    I remember that same season the Raiders had a MNF game at Denver, then followed that up with a road game at New Orleans and playing the early slot, but this situation with the Seahawks takes the cake.
    On another note in a different sport, I was at the 2010 San Francisco Giants home opener which took place on Friday April 9, 2010 against the Atlanta Braves. That was a 1:35 PM first pitch but the Braves played the night before in Atlanta against the Chicago Cubs that was a 7:10 PM Eastern first pitch. Could you imagine playing that late and then flying cross country and maybe getting in at 2 or 3 am, not getting to your hotel until maybe 4 am then playing an early afternoon game. That game went 13 innings as well. That would come to close to MLBs equivalent to this situation.

    Despite what the league did to the Seahawks, Holmgren has to take some blame for how he handled things after that. The team went home, gaining 2 hours, and slept in their own beds for 3 days. And then they traveled to the other side of the country. Why not travel from KC to Charlotte and get them used to the Eastern time zone? Plenty of time to be well rested before facing the Panthers. And just like a random guy figured out how to fix the schedule when the league could not, another random guy figured out how to make a bad situation a bit easier for the Seahawks instead of what Mike Holmgren did.

    The NFL was straight-up incompetent in this case. I'm not gonna suggest that the Seahawks would've beaten the Panthers with a better travel situation, but I think they would've had a better shot. Having to fly from Kansas City, Mo. back to Seattle on a short week and to Charlotte and back after that is brutal and I'm not surprised that they played so poorly at the Panthers. I don't care that the game in Charlotte was in the late window. The NFL had no business having the Seahawks play in Charlotte after a Monday night road game, especially on that was 2 time zones east of them.

    Traveling distances have something to do with the reason they changed the "pairings" of teams in the West Divisions in terms of which opponents were home and which were away according to the league's scheduling rotation.
    Starting with the 2002 season, with the new alignment and scheduling format, in each division, the teams were listed 1-4 by their location identifier. Example: AFC East - Buffalo, Miami, New England, New York (Jets). In each division teams 1 & 2 were paired while 3 & 4 were paired. Thus each season Buffalo and Miami got the same home opponents and same away opponents, excluding the two games each wound play against teams within their conference based on previous season standings. Same went for New England and New York Jets.
    The issue aroxe with the fact that in the West divisions, the pairs were Denver/Kansas City, Oakland/San Diego, Arizona/St. Louis, and San Francisco/Seattle. This meant that, for one thing, two teams from one division would have two West Coast road games, while the other two didn't have any. And worse, per the rotation, in a few seasons a couple of teams from a division would end up with four West Coast road games while the other two had none. That happened in 2005 with Dallas and the New York Giants both having two play all four Pacific Coast teams away, while Philadelphia and Washington got to face each of them at home. I'm aware of the Cardinals home base being in a state where their time of day is the same as the Pacific Coast 8 months out of the year and the first two months of the NFL season but the point stands.
    Then there was 2008 when, per the scheduling rotation, New England and the Jets would have to face those four WC teams away, while Buffalo and Miami got to host those teams. I do remember that the Patriots requested that the league schedule those games in two back-to-back weekends, which was granted. The Jets made no such request and was thus stuck with four separate trips to the WC at different parts of the season. The Patriots went 3-1 in those games while the Jets were 0-4 in those games, not to mention that none of the four WC teams had a winning record in 2008. Another problem is that if that exact rotation had stayed in place in perpetuity, Buffalo and Miami would never be forced to endure that kind of schedule, but the Patriots and Jets would about every 24 years.
    In the aftermath, starting with the 2010 season, the "pairings" of the West Division teams switched, as now it was Denver/Oakland, Kansas City/San Diego, Arizona/San Francisco and St. Louis/Seattle. Of course the Rams moved back to LA, still the league has done a few more things to ease the burden of travel.

    • @mgb4692
      @mgb4692 Рік тому

      They've even done this more with east coast teams the last few years, bundle them up out west:
      2015: Ravens at 49ers, Cards (MNF)
      2020: Patriots at Chargers, Rams (TNF)
      2022: Patriots at Cards (MNF), at Raiders
      2023: Giants at Cards, 49ers (TNF)

    • @kyle1910
      @kyle1910 Рік тому

      They can't do the same thing for western teams traveling east **to the same degree** but it seems like over the last dozen or so seasons there are more such games in the 4pm window or in primetime than in years past.
      It still holds true that good teams find ways to not be completely done in by their traveling schedule. Recall the '89 Rams at the end of their season until the NFC Title game

  • @ericrakestraw664

    From 1995-2001, the San Francisco 49ers lead the NFL in miles logged on the road due to the Rams moving from Los Angeles to St. Louis and the expansion Carolina Panthers joining the NFC West Division. That left San Francisco as the only NFC West team that actually played their home games on the west coast, a problem that wasn't rectified until the NFL realigned the divisions to be more geographically friendly to begin the 2002 NFL season. Even though the 49ers logged more travel miles than any NFL team just in their four road division games alone, I never recalled them complaining to the league about it. They toughed it out and made the playoffs five times in that seven-year span. Maybe I'm just biased as a 49er fan, but Mike Holmgren and the Seahawks just come off as whiny crybabies in that situation. They could have easily stayed on the east coast in the week leading up to the Carolina game instead of flying back to Seattle. In recent years the 49ers would always, when they played back-to-back road games in the eastern time zone, choose to stay on the road to avoid the unnecessary travel and they usually played better as a result.

    Why couldn't the Seahawks just share a practice facility with any of the Carolina FBS schools? (For context to the other commenters, UNC-Charlotte didn't have football yet, so they wouldn't have had a suitable practice facility.) That's what I would've tried in that situation. You could maybe even get the league to reimburse your lengthy stay because it's their fault for the massive oversight.

    big deal. teams travel to all coasts during the season. more games when cross conference east/west divisions meet. pats had games in l a back to back and just stayed there two weeks. And there were no 4000 miles trips to london for teams back then, some after already traveling to game the week before. and seahawks need to make the return to afc unis permanent.

    Back then, Monday night football was THE game. Not Sunday night like it has been since 2006. The Seahawks weren't even relevant enough to be on there if not for Holmgren's arrival. They played 3 Monday night games in the prior 10 full seasons from 1989-1998. Most teams like the niners, cowboys, packers, would play 3 MNF games per season.
    So bottom line f*** seattle

      Eh, not really- they were 27th in the NFL in yards allowed and finished 7-9. They did allow the 12th fewest points that season though.
      The Panthers simply showed up to play that day.

    You’re talking in circles makes me skip the first 75% of the video to actually get to the part of the video that is what the title of the video is. You have interesting topics, but you make these 16-23 min vids that all should be 4-8 min videos with the relevant info.

    My takeaway from this is that Seattle is too far away, and they should just disband the team. 😏
