Loretta Di Lelio Corelli sings Mimì's Act 1 aria 'Sì. Mi chiamano Mimì' from Puccini's La Bohème (old Cetra 78 rpm record) c.1950 (or earlier)
Since in our poll the overwhelming majority said they would be interested in some Puccini arias performed by Loretta Di Lelio (Franco's wife), here is the first one. I hope that those who voted no will also find enjoyment in the images of the couple together.
Unfortunately I don't know the date of the recording, it was probably made in the 1940s, or possibly in the early 1950s, in the studio of the Cetra record company.
According to an interesting anecdote, Loretta, after she finally left the stage in early 1960, devoted herself so completely to Franco's career that she refused even to sign her own records, saying "That person no longer exists, I'm just Mrs Corelli."
Loretta played a significant role in Franco's career: an incredibly strong, intelligent and versatile woman who put in a lot of work far beyond the usual duties of a wife to help Franco be able to give us fans THE Corelli we love. She acted as his manager, negotiated contracts, shaped his public image, interpreted for him in multiple languages, provided him with professional feedback and coaching in singing and acting, recorded his performances, acted as a general assistant and secretary for him etc. Although Loretta's legendary jealousy and fierce temper caused her much criticism from Franco's fans and colleagues, her husband stuck by her despite their difficult and sometimes tempestuous relationship, and even in their old age they remained virtually inseparable, with Franco always greatly relying on her emotional support and sometimes much-needed "tough love".

A wonderful singer in her own right! The world should hear more of her!
Ho ascoltato Loretta in questa stupenda romanza e devo dire che è stata una splendida sorpresa. Il colore della voce è di buona qualità ma ciò che più mi ha sorpreso ed emozionato sono i colori e l'espressione che mette in questa romanza semplice ma che se cantata con i giusti colori diventa un capolavoro. Loretta interpreta perfettamente Mimì e dal punto " ..e in cielo...ma quando vien lo sgelo... " diventa meraviglioso il fraseggio l'interpretazione il pathos che ci mette. Non avevo mai sentito la sua voce in romanze e lei non me ne ha mai parlato, non si faceva pubblicità e non raccontava della sua carriera, ormai annullata per amore di Franco. Fosse viva la chiamerei per congratularmi.
Nata purtroppo in un'epoca dove uscivano solo i grandi. Oggi sarebbe tra le maggiori in attività. Notate l'interpretazione e il sentimento che traspare dal suo canto. Ce ne fossero oggi. Brava Loretta.

Yes, Umberto Di Lelio was one of the regular stars at La Scala in the 1920s and 30s, and he toured the world with Italian opera companies, but he was also a respected vocal teacher. His master was Antonio Cotogni, who, among others, also taught Beniamino Gigli, Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, Carmen Melis, Carlo Galeffi, Giuseppe de Luca, Jean de Reszke, Mariano Stabile, Mattia Battistini, Riccardo Stracciari etc.

Purtroppo è verissimo. Quasi tutto perso, poiché qualcosa dovrebbe essere sopravvissuto all’opera devastatrice della signora in questione. Era gelosissima e con un caratteraccio.

Si è dedicata al marito che aveva una voce superba sublime e meravigliosa. Era giovanissima quando ha lasciato. Forse continuando gli studi come ha fatto lui chissà! Mi sembrano inopportuni questi commenti. ❤

An extremely pretty woman who did secondary roles well in her films and commercial recordings. It doesn't seem that she was interested in doing the star roles, though her marriage could have helped her to do them. In any case, she retired after forty to look after The One.
