@@bastianinicorelli exactly, a truly romantic Lohengrin. Imagine how meltingly he would have caressed the music when singing with Elsa!

Corelli had his phobias & it’s my guess that as far as OTELLO was concerned he feared being compared with Del Monaco. I had some coaching sessions with him but never had the nerve to ask this question that many others had as well. Even his friend & colleague Jerome Hines could or would not answer our inquiries regarding this but nevertheless I have always had my suspicions.

I think his "phobia" is much more evident in why he didn't sing Manon Lescaut, whcih would have been a natural (he said it was the most difficult role?? for him?) Had he kept really singigng a few more years he might have done Otello-I don't think MDM had anything to do with it-though of course there woudl have been acomparison, but that is always the case in any role. Just pointing out that in his time Otello was only being sung by heldentenors-real baritone based voices-Vinay, Vickers, even Mccracken-and MDM with his loud, and louder trumpet. Remember this was before Domingo and tenors tryign anything. Thinking of Mertinelli's Otello-which I like a good deal-as compared to the heldens and blasters, I always imagined Franco's would have some closeness to that.

Too bad he never got around to Othello. He would have been radiant in that role.

He avoided Otello as did Tucker and Caruso before him, both of them spinto's also, Corelli was a Spinto but he his voice had definite Dramatic color, so he would of been a great Otello had he done it. His speaking voice was maybe higher then his singing voice, which has nothing to do with the singing voice. As a comparison Del Monaco was a dramatic tenor with also a tenor like sounding speaking voice. Tucker was a spinto, not a dramatic tenor, but he had a deeper speaking voice then either Corelli or Del Monaco. Warren had a huge dramatic baritone, but his speaking voice sounded like he could be a tenor, so you cannot always tell.

I'm an underdeveloped lyric tenor and my voice sounds much deeper than his when speaking. It's so weird that his speaking voice sounds so light.

Yes ! I've never heard his speaking voice until now. I never would have guessed it was Corelli !
Man ! There must be something wrong with the recording technology ?

@@cliffgaither the speaking voice is not in the throat. The sound is created and is coming from the back of the throat. O

@@cliffgaither There is nothing wrong with the recording. I've heard him in a number of interviews and that is how his speaking voice sounded.

heard Caballe making introductions to songs in that Christmas clip with her daughter. Likewise, rather light and not even appealing!
