My idea as to why Jack beats up Alex's corpse is that Jack hates anything that makes him feel vulnersble or genuine human emotion so he has to "take it out" on Alex's body. Tobias does such a masterful job in the very next scene of pulling himself back into Jack's hardened shell. A master class in acting.
Flapjack Randall is NOT self-aware, he knows something's wrong with him but he doesn't care to do anything about it. Like Dougal, he's a narcissist - the malignant kind.
It's not a different reaction it's the same, they just SHOW it differently. Both Randall and Dougal are narcissists. Randall=malignant narcissist - rage reaction. Dougal=covert narcissist - making himself the victim. Both of them are blaming the brother for dying and projecting their weaknesses onto them. It's the same just shown differently.
In the book, the Jack Randall & Mary Hawkins wedding was even weirder... Jamie(!) was one of the witnesses. Like the way they did it here though. It was tense enough. I agree whole-heartedly! Outlander is such great TV, owed in no small part to Diana's Gabaldon's rich characters, research and amazing story-telling, but also the script-writing, acting, directing, set-design, costuming, soundtrack, etc... ALL brilliant! Yes, I would really like to know Black Jack's back story.
Alexander Randall was the younger brother of Jonathan Randall. In 1744 he began an affair with Mary Hawkins, who bore him a son, Denys. His dying wish was for his brother to marry Miss Hawkins and protect her and his son.

You can't have an AFFAIR with someone that's not married.
