Why are some people in the comments acting like they are Game Boy masters and criticising this video? I'm pretty sure the creator didn't want to trick people into thinking this was real, so why the frick are you people acting like you could have made a way better video and s/he did such a poor job?
haha, mind blowing XD i'm sure that sort of animation would have used up more than ALL the space on the game cartrige - leaving no more space for an actual game.
I'm really sure this isn't real. Doesn't seem pixely just blurry and also the Gameboy itself doesn't move and really looks like a video put on a picture.
Boy: I CAN'T CONTROL MY GAMEBOY MOMMY!!!!!! WEIRD PEOPLE ARE ON IT!!!!!!!! Mom: *looks at GAMEBOY* Is this Touhou? Me: *breaks down door* DID SOMEONE SAY TOUHOU?!?!?!
the sound is from the gb chip (or something very close to it) but the video is just the video pixellated and placed on a frame of the gameboy. look around the time when eirin reaches for the moon. there's a few colours there that the gameboy wouldn't be able to display.
This here is the first Bad Apple!! I heard. It translates so well to Gameboy both in sound and graphics that I almost prefer it to the original. Whoever did this in the first place has some serious chops.
It's a shame, the script they used didn't posterize the image to 4 shades. At certain points you can up 8 different shades of grey interpolating in the pixels. This would have been impossible on Game Boy. So the video definitely isn't of anything that the Gameboy's screen was even possible of processing. I don't see anything wrong with the sound though, though it sounds more like GameGear than Gameboy to me. That may just be because of the composition though.
The answer to that question is no, the Game Boy absolutely COULD NOT make this happen were someone to make a special cart that had this video on there, for it would be too much movement for a Game Boy to take, and ditto for playing this on a Game Boy Color, NES/FDS/FDD, Sega Master System, or Sega Game Gear.
This is a fake, but it's certainly possible to do for real. Now the Bad Apple fad is over, doesn't seem likely anyone will bother. But streaming tile-video to the GB's screen isn't a huge deal. Lots of the tiles stay the same from frame to frame, so don't need updating. First you'd need a program on the PC to uncompress the video into bitmaps, then analyse and encode them into lists of tiles. The GB side would just need to read the lists, and copy the tiles.
screen is simulated, no monochrome GB screen can update that fast without *some* motion blur, but as far as I can tell, it's inlaid into a picture of a real GB
No, I'm actually not sure you can do transitions like that at all with the GB CPU. If you're really curious, I could check it a bit more in-depth. Also, it couldn't be an actual GB for a couple reasons : - The nintendo logo doesn't show up on boot. It could be skipped but requires hacking up the ROM. It also isn't possible the "Reimu Boy" logo fits in the GB ROM. - You don't have a direct framebuffer (understand : you can't change individual pixels easily) to the screen. This is because having a whole framebuffer is heavy memory-side (it'd occupy the half of the main memory), and too slow to be correctly used by the CPU. The GPU presents tiles, sprites, etc., and you use them. So no matter what, the GB's z80 CPU is really too slow to fill the DSP with the audio data along with updating the whole screen at a fairly high refresh rate. You can represent a group of 4 pixels with one byte (4 tints per pixel = 2 bits (square root of 4)). So you need to fill in 5.76Kb of memory every frame, so 115.2kb per second if you want 20fps. That's a lot and I doubt the weak 4MHz GB CPU can handle that.
True fact, although it may not have seemed like it, the gameboy actually ran at 60fps, but probably would not get smooth transitions because of limitations in the hardware, if someone were able to give the hardware a boost, and by that I mean make it as powerful as the machines of today, it may be possible.
Never seen the actual show itself, but considering that it looks 3D (May not be fully 3D but the kind where a character can be seen from different angles) the conversion to the gameboy would be insane! Just look at how many sprites this thing can hold on the cartridge! (Also doesn't help that "Gameboy Color extreme overclocking" is in the related videos to the side >_>)
Well, the music video itself was based on a video game franchise. You can find the original video by looking up "Bad Apple!" on UA-cam. Anyways, someone has ported the video to an NES rom, which *will* play if you put it into an emulator. When it reaches the end of the video, it will loop from the start.
***** I've seen the original plenty of times, it still kinda looked like an anime to me though. But my knowledge is limited to the actual video and song.
Graysongdl I see. Well, the video game franchise in question is a shoot-em-up series called "Touhou." All the games - the music, art, and programming - are created by a single person, ZUN, who runs "Team Shanghai Alice." (Though for some games, he collaborates with a team called "Twilight Frontier.") There are a couple fan-made anime out there, such as "Memories of Phantasm," or "A Summer Day's Dream," but these are not endorsed by the original author. The games are only sold in Japan at events like Comiket and Reitaisai. As a foreigner, your options for getting these games are importing them through an online vendor, or downloading them for freesies. If you're curious about the games, but are worried about wasting your money, I'd recommend downloading them to see if you can get into it.

A Beautiful version of a beautiful song/video
Why listen to this "8-bit" version, when the original is already 8-bit?
Andruchon246 Because they are 2 completely different songs.
No the original is 16 bit
I keep my classic gameboy in my 1993 Honda prelude
Sound: 2 square wave generators, 1 PCM 4-bit wave sample (64 4-bit samples played in 1x64 bank or 2x32 bank) channel, 1 noise generator, and one audio input from the cartridge.[33] The unit only has one speaker, but headphones provide stereo sound
Display: Reflective STN LCD 160 × 144 pixels
I've only wathced about 7 seconds of it, and it's already got me awestruck. Nice job!
It probably is possible, if difficult. The main thing that would make this hard to do audio-wise would be the limited channels, but that's typically only a problem with actual games which are doing a lot of other things. Just look at the kinds of mixing people do for serious 8-bit music on actual Game Boys.
With this, it'd just be that video, the animating which would probably be the hardest part. Many, many frames, and Game Boys don't have good frame rates.
can you imagine that when the gameboy was just out, they had a hard time making those games, and now we make them for fun :p
true
I love it how if you squint while watching this it looks like the original one...
i loved it when the apple fell on the ground all noises stopped on both ends
At least the video was rendered behind the scratches and not over them as some editors would do. I like it.
Ther's a ROM of the NES version on youtube and the video and audio limits of both the NES and GB are very similar. Also, the GB wasn't made until 1989.
This was 12 years ago i was born :
That and 1/4th of the sounds used in compiling this remix couldn't be produced by the gameboy's soundchip
@coreboy Still, the gradient of that scene implies a greater volume of pixels than a mere 160x144.
Even after seeing many versions of the video i still HAVE to watch it
I love the addition of adding one of the Touhou title themes in there.
The original Bad Apple theme was for the PC-98, then it was remixed, THEN the remix was down-graded into 8-bit form. This is WAY too confusing.
This just sounds like some epic final boss music right here
This is coolest think I saw today
Damn, the wobble...this would be an amazing stream prelude.
This would make a killer 'Boss battle background music'
The Game Boy had only 4 colors it could produce- "Black", "Dark Grey", "Light Grey", and "White" (Darker Green, Dark Green, Green, Light Green). I see plenty more than four colors in multiple shots.
This is techno beat.
Love it!!!
tfw the gameboy screen is much sharper than this
literally the best thing ever NOW MADE ON A GAMEBOY
After that, the Gameboy exploded from exhaustion and epic awesomenes.
R.I.P. Reimu Boy.
the old school game boy screen provides a nice GREN screen, theey used a pixelate effect and then the gameboy as green screen ^^
It had the sound capabilities. As to the picture, I'm not entirely sure.
Honestly, i have no idea how many versions of this song i've heard now...
This version of the song makes Touhou seem like a Gameboy Color game that came out a little while before a Gameboy Advance was released. :)
The scratch on the screen both amuses and upsets me.
1.5 speed makes it sound like a video game!
The original is from a game.
How is it possible that this sounds cooler.
the original should have been Gameboy...
There's a demoscene group working with the old Gameboy now? Cool!
Thank god for that Dot Matrix Stereo Sound.
holy crap!!! the Touhou fanbase sure can make amazing things when they put they're minds to it XD
UA-cam took longer to find the 144p version of the video than 720p. That means 144p is better for this song. DO IT.
i wish the gameboy was this strong and a cartridge had enough memory.
if there was a game on the game boy like this... I would be amazed...
Playing Pokemon Yellow and this pops up on my screen
If aliens ever came to earth I hope this will be the first thing they see.
