Building a Geodesic Greenhouse, Completing the Growing Dome

- I put a roof on the solar panel shelter and we finish building the geodesic growing dome greenhouse in the forest. Ben from Arctic Acres spends two days with me completing the dome, installing solar powered exhaust and intake fans and a water reservoir (next video). We cook our meals on an open fire in front of the shelter and deal with waves of blackflies that hatch as the weather warms.

In the last 10 days, my mother passed away and was buried. I thank you for your channel and what you do. On a good week it's a highlight. On a bad week it's a distraction. Your humbled outlook is not reflective of your amazingly positive effect on the world and those who watch you.
I'm really sorry about the loss of your mother ... and so close to Mother's Day ( if you are in the United States ) .
I know how it feels , my mother died 2 years ago ...
I hope your good memories of her will bring you comfort and that your healing from this difficult time will be swift .
I have to tell you I don't understand the last sentence because i do feel very humbled by the work he does and i'm sure others do .
What other channels here have you found that you like ?
@@gardensofthegods thank you for your thoughts. By the last sentence I mean he has such an amazingly positive impact on those who follow him yet he is so humbled despite it. Perhaps I'm not putting my words out effectively.
I was close to my mum. She was amazing and has hit me very hard. So this channel I follow brings me solace. I watch fishing channels local to me (brisbane) dark doco channels and fascinating horror.
The loss of loved ones is always painful but if it is any consolation, I would tell you to remember her in good times, when you laugh with her. A hug from Argentina@@sebastiengiboulot7848

So sorry about the loss of your mom you are in my thoughts and prayers
All l can say is this man doesn’t have a lazy bone in his body, his family is truly blessed. He shows how he cares by his day to day endeavours. God Bless and Keep You.

It's the middle of night here in Norway, but that's not gonna stop me from watching the whole video. Truly an honor to follow you on your adventures.
In norway watching as well
Mee too. I'm an old handicapped woman with 1 1/2 leg. This man inspired me so much that I went out and planted potatoes to day on crutches. I have seen all the videos
I'm glad that inspired you , dear Lady , to go plant some potatoes ... I just finished eating french fries .
I really did not want to watch an hour of this at the regular speed and wanted to speed some of it up , but this is the first time i've never been able to do that with any videos here as that option is missing ... I've never had that problem before .

Ok we're getting serious now. The man's hanging up his pans!! This new homestead is going to be awesome!
He damn sure doesn’t mess around! And I believe you’re right this is going to be an epic build!
Dear Monique B.
👍👌👏😁 And I always thought that the saying is wherever one hangs his pants he is at home. Or was this also misunderstood by me and it is: Wherever one hangs his pans, his hat is at home!? ;-)
Best regards, luck and health.
When a man hangs up his pans, he's HOME. I mean to tell ya. :)

Shawn, MEANS BUSINESS
Great to see this growing dome complete! It’s a fantastic structure and tool that we know will serve you well!
In the future we are hoping to create more content on Arctic Acres, Growing Dome greenhouses, future projects, and more.
I'm confused. If this is a greenhouse dome, for growing food, why were all of the insulation pieces stapled on? I might understand on the north side of the dome because most of the sunshine comes from the south at that latitude, but it seems that much of the dome was covered in it and not a whole lot was left for sunshine. Also, the solar panels looked like they were put on the north/northeast side instead of the south. Can you explain the thought process?
@@diananazaroff5266 Yep, these things puzzled me too. As someone who knows little about such things, I'd be interested to watch a brief run-through of what it does, how, and why.
Arctic Acres certainly seem to employ grafters, good to see.
Its beautiful 😍
@@diananazaroff5266, the silver pieces look like they’re removable. I wonder if they put them in because it’s close to summer and they don’t want any overheating inside the dome. Take them out in the winter and get more heat gain.
From the website "The North wall insulation covers about 1/3 of the polycarbonate glazing panels on the inside of the Growing Dome® all year long. The insulation reflects light and radiant energy away from the greenhouse, which provides shade for the Above Ground Pond in the summer, keeping the greenhouse cool. In the winter months, the insulation reflects the light and radiant energy from the sun towards the above-ground pond, keeping the water in the pond and the ambient air temperature in the greenhouse warm."
My Friend, you bring so much knowledge, insight, and peace to us. From the bottom of my heart thank you. Thank you.
Two young beavers sat proudly on there newly constrcted dam. They watched Shawn build a Super dome, a Moose fence the last straw was the shelter . They looked at each other then looked down at their dam with disgust. They have since moved on to retire in Toronto to live in a cement swimming pool .
Yeah. "Hey mom, look what we did!" Mother beaver simply pointed toward the dome, and two beavers threw their "hands" up in disgust thinking, "Humans! Why do we even bother?"
The old adage "Busy as a Beaver" Shawn almost puts it to shame I know Shawn has a heart but I'm beginning to wonder if he's human ...he does the work of ten men and that's on a bad day

it all begins with you.... and you did mow the grass..... kudos !!!!
I have a small lawn with a lot of stuff to move and obstacles that can't be moved. Also a hill. The mower is electric so I move THAT cord a lot! And YES! By the time I put everything were it belongs and clean the mower, weed eater, and sweep the sidewalks, I am one tired nana of nine. OOF tah!
It's truly a choice to keep busy and fit. Choices in making the right choices is from the knowledge we obtain from this world that matters to all life we should always be striving for higher knowledge. Humans used to be smart once upon a time with ancient cultures. Now it's just rape, waste, pillage and piracy of our world of abundance.
The geodesic greenhouse is a marvel. I bet we will see more of them going up. Your meals look yummy too. Lots of progress on the homestead. ☀️
I don't like the look but I get it. It makes good sense.
That dome will work as well as the old Victorian vegetable gardens - just with a lid on! The reflective panels do the same as the north wall in the Victorian: sending light and warmth down to the crops! That greenhouse is going to very productive - it was a very wise choice for your location!
When the news is flooded with war, it's time for some Shawn James and a peace of mind

With the ongoing draught here in my California cabin home in the woods the sound of the rain is truly comforting.
I'm glad you mentioned the rain because that was my favorite part of this video .
I live in the Dallas suburbs but i'm originally from the Philadelphia area ... we used to get a fair amount of rain there and I could never get used to the lack of it down here .
I've always loved the rain . So when it's raining here it feels like a holiday to me and i savor every moment .
I hope that the drought will end for all of you there in Cali ... and all the other problems they've been having .
I once heard a Tibetan Buddhist Lama say drought happens in regions where the general population are not compassionate .... just an interesting thought ... reminds me of the lyrics from A Horse With No Name by America : "under the cities lies a heart underground but the humans will give no love " .
@@gardensofthegods Hi Gardens... I'm a full on mountain woman (73 years old) living not off the grid but sure-n-nuf off the beaten path in the Sierra Nevada range not far from Big Trees State Park. The serenity and solitude I enjoy is a rare blessing and one reason I so enjoy Shawn's channel is because of all the "natural sounds" that surround him remind me of my home here. Geese flying over-head, frogs singing in my creek and few rare sounds of other people. I'm truly blessed.
@@nancybrown2700 Well , i don't live in an area as remote as you ... we have a fair amount of woods around here and i'm grateful for that and all the sounds of the birds chirping especially Cardinals .... there used to be mourning doves, i don't know what happened to them ... the Blue Jays are beautiful but of course they don't have a nice sound .
On the rare occasions where a police siren goes off we hear the coyotes going crazy right behind in the woods .
Yes i'm very blessed that all my vews are very green , lot of woods and sky ... despite the fact that we are still near everything .
I wouldn't mind living further out but not too remote to be honest with you .
We have a lot of streams ... and springs around here ... a lot of tree frogs .
but i did get spoiled a long time ago living for a while on a 232 acre small dairy farm ... Rolling hills and just all farms and orchards around us .
I know that where you're living has to be really beautiful as i've heard many people talk about it .
It's hard to live without hearing the sound of the rain as much as i used to .
@@nancybrown2700 I just looked up Big Trees State Park ... is that Calaveras Big Trees State Park ? ... with those giant sequoia trees ?
Wow , you really are lucky to be living in such a beautiful area .
That's cool that you say that you are a mountain woman ... you probably have some really good stories that need to be shared with the world and you probably know a lot of good natural remedies ... I'm into all kinds of natural remedies ... I like foraging but regretfully I didn't do it much at all in the past 12 months because of too many homeless people in the woods .
@@gardensofthegods Yes, Gardens (and good morning from Dogwood Canyon) I am within a short hike of the back side of Big Trees park in a part of the Sierras which boasts a huge variety of trees including the majestic giant Sequoia. My cabin rests deep in a Dogwood lined corridor along a small creek. The morning chorus of birds singing their spring serenades come lilting out from the flowering woods making this time of year especially magical. Those of us so charmed as to be able to live with nature are truly blessed. And those who don't can live vicariously through folks like Shawn. This far west we don't have Cardinals, but the vivid Western Tanager is our most brilliant species and a virtuoso singer as well. The males are bright sparks of tropical color with a truly lovely song they enjoy singing from the highest trees. The Black-headed Grosbeak has a similar song but does his chorus from lower down in the forest, so their are layers of voices coming from all about. Down low the sprite of our woods the Winter Wren sings year round in the most cheerful way and if approached it will sings but in a "whisper "so that when you are feet away if you listen you still enjoy their bright melody.
Thanks 🙏 love the super long videos, great to watch something to warm the soul…amidst all the madness of the world at the moment.

Herewith some Useless Information ..
In Southern Africa, in the Namaqualand up against the Orange River we have our 'Miggies' (biting midges). If the Provincial Government forget (as they occasionally do) to conduct the Annual 'Spray', the Nightmare descends. Lambs suffer greatly and often starve to death as the Mothers spend their time huddled together as protection against the swarms. Insect repellent .. ketchup for them. The amount of hard physical work you accomplish is amazing. To have the fortitude to do it once , and have that dream taken from you, and to do it all over again, is admirable.
I think you could help a lot of people with a book explaining how you motivate yourself . I imagine some of it is genetics and you already have a massive drive, but it also takes personal grit ,to do things on the scale you do.
Anyone else out there itching to move into Shawn's yurt? Amazing.
I was just thinking that dome could easily be my off grid cabin all by itself. that's all I really need, I think
Yeah, count me in.
Yurts are definitely a viable housing alternative. UA-cam has a number of clips of very pleasant ones with all mod cons.
Already got my bags packed.
Yup on my way... get to help , eat great food, have an awesome geology lesson and building work.. oh and Calli gets a new friend to throw her toy...
You are a true nest maker!
I love watching your VIDEOS!!
I get that the ridges give strength, but oh, my OCD with their orientations. This is going to be so useful. Congrats on receiving it and their help in constructing.
That is just amazing man!
Bom dia ☺️🐕☮️ para o senhor. E seu lindo paraíso dá natureza 🌴🌱🌳 jesus abençoe seus lindos projetos!!
Wow, watched you build your 1st log cabin gorgeous home, viewed what happened at that location, now your almost finished with a project at the new location! As I've viewed for many years watching how talented & literally genuis minded full of the knowledge it takes to take on such projects you are truly an inspiration to so many! Especially now in this day & age of disturbance, violence, food shortages, arctic freeze, water shortages, etc. You truly are impressive & inspire my friend! Wish more American men weren't so busy chasing women, being drug abusers & addicted, & suffering from alcoholism!
If more men focused & applied themselves to pursue such knowledge & qualities you have learned the world would be a much better place! Keep up the good work, continue to pursue & make your dreams come true! God be with you & God bless you!
Shae...😷👊💙
