  • using a wet method to extract mercury metal from cinnabar- its raw material. we used a solution of sodium hydroxide and elemental sulfur adding the cinnabar when it had all dissolved and then adding aluminium metal to precipitate the mercury metal.
    this and separated from the crud and was washed cleaning it up to shiny metal. the yield was nearly 38g of clean product.

    One could try replacing aluminium with tin here as it should work as well.
    It should dissolve into alkaline solution probably without producing much hydrogen.
    So because of the smaller difference in electrochemical potential between tin and mercury a more gentle/slower reaction is to be expected, which might be beneficial.
    I found the vigorous reaction with aluminium powder quite concerning as the mist formed might carry away some mercury with it. Maybe some aluminium is lost in the process while producing hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide?

  • @Grak70

    How long did you rinse the amalgam to consume all the aluminum? I soaked in 10% HCl for two days and it’s still bubbling and hardly anything left. :-( Hg not supposed to be soluble in HCl, so the small amount must mean I didn’t hit endpoint with the Al. Do I keep adding aluminum until no more bubbling? Appreciate your help...

    **So, if you start out with relatively pure cinnabar, and provided you are efficient in your extraction technique, you can expect that approx 75% of the mass/weight of the cinnabar will be mercury?** That's really good, especially when compared with extractions of other pure elements from naturally occuring minerals.

    I’m curious about the reaction, Al in NaOH generates hydrogen anyway, does this use the nascent hydrogen effect? That is monotomic hydrogen is released at the molecular level and that has enough energy to separate the mercury from the sulphur. If this is the case, a similar effect might be achieved with cinnebar in a hydrochloric acid and zinc reaction.
    I’m not sure about adding sulphur at the start.

    • @AllChemystery
      @AllChemystery  7 років тому +4

      the sodium hydroxide/sulfur forms polysulfide which is the reducing agent here. the cinnabar is insoluble in water and the mercury is trapped in the cinnabar( mercury II sulfide) so adding Al to a cinnabar suspension will not really do anything.

    Ye crud kya hota hai....is procedure ki reaction kya hai

  • @realedna
    @realedna 6 років тому

    I wondered how you prepared the polysulfide solution by just adding sulfur to sodium hydroxide solution. Well, sulfur disproportionates in alkaline solution to give sulfide and sulfite. Those can each react with more sulfur to form polysulfide and thiosulfate. Maybe oxygen is formed via reduction of hydroxide by sulfur, but I find this unlikely in regards to electrochemical potentials.
    So you probably used a mixture of polysulfide and sulfite which maybe isn't ideal!?
    You could have started with sodium sulfide to get a pure polysulfide solution.

    • @mwilson14
      @mwilson14 5 років тому

      That solution makes a fairly abundant supply of polysulfides and given long enough time, the polysulfides oxidize to form thiosulfate.--obviously not target product for getting mercury. I created sodium thiosulfate recently by making a very strong polysulfide solution using excess sulfur which will precipitate out once the solution is cooled. The remaining solution is diluted with distilled water (5x volume of polysulfides) and bubbled air oxidizes the solution over a matter of several days or longer.
      My point being, in a very non-direct way, is that there is plenty of polysulfide(s) in solution for reacting with the cinnabar. I think NaOH & S are easier to find at local stores than sodium sulfide and this is just the quick and dirty route.--Maybe that's why he chose this method? I'm not criticizing your described method. I've just been spending way too much time trying to make sodium thiosulfate as efficiently as possible using the NaOH + S approach, so that's the only reason I'm even replying.
      I believe the sulfites which form are low yielding and decompose to form sulfide/polysulfides/thiosulfate as SO2 & H2S are released during heating. SO2 being the leading factor for converting sulfite to thiosulfate.

      what he's doing, is reacting the mercury sulfide (cinnabar) with other chemicals to remove the "sulfide" part, so all that's left is the "mercury" part of the mercury sulfide.
      mercury is element number 80 on the periodic table of elements. its a metal, like iron or aluminum or copper. these are all different elements, they can't be turned into one another.
      what he's doing, is he's reacting the aluminum with a chemical that has mercury in it, and the aluminum is replacing the mercury by binding to the chemical that was holding onto the mercury so the mercury falls free. and it settles on the bottom. it is NOT liquid aluminum, its a different element entirely, its mercury metal.

      It’s highly likely you got fake cinnabar in that case. It’s been discovered that Chinese eBay sellers have sold it before. Did you notice any Sulfide smell? It’s a good indicator that it’s working. And you do need quite a bit of Aluminium too.

    I am really frustrated, won't the aluminium form an amalgam with the mercury?

    • @AllChemystery
      @AllChemystery  7 років тому +1

      it does to begin with but then the Al part of the alloy is consumed in the HCl washings leaving the plain Hg behind.
      Potassium permanganate will also work as a preliminary washing step. You can see the telltale amalgam in the form of an ash looking substance that creeps up the Al plate. It just needs to be agitated in the acid for a while until no more bubbling is seen and then for an extra hour to be certain.
      We then thoroughly wash it in distilled water. Why frustrated? Are you having problems?

    • @ExplosiveAnyThing
      @ExplosiveAnyThing 7 років тому

      So you probably need to filter the solution and then transfer the solids in to HCl?
      Problems? Yeah of course mental ones.... just kidding :). Ok I just wanted to try that if i found myself some cinnabar and i had a second thought of how the process works. What if you put some copper so it won't react with NaOH? How can you remove that from the mercury? Oh btw thanks for the video be safe!

    • @AllChemystery
      @AllChemystery  7 років тому

      For a comprehensive look at the process i used read here: www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=18162&page=2#pid303711 it has alot of information on the process.
      In this attempt i basically poured off as much of the waste as possible and added water -for about 3 times to collect up the metal with a syringe. you could filter it through cotton wool but losses would be high for the small amount you had.
      another method which uses copper is to dissolve the cinnabar into Aqua regia and precipitate it with copper.

    • @ExplosiveAnyThing
      @ExplosiveAnyThing 7 років тому

      Well, thank you very much! If I get some cinnabar in my hands i 'll try it. I believe the method that you showed is the safest of all.

    • @AllChemystery
      @AllChemystery  7 років тому

      ExplosiveAnyThing just be aware of the toxic H2S gas that is evolved and you should be fine. It is quite a lot when you add the Al powder.

      what? if its not the myth then its nothing, the only "red mercury" is a myth, and a source of fake videos. you can't actually make red or black mercury. unless you react it wit other chemicals, but then it wont be mercury anymore, and wont be shiny.

    • @AllChemystery
      @AllChemystery  7 років тому

      you smell it at first- it stinks bad,then if exposure is prolonged you
      get olfactory fatigue which is what makes this gas killer. you think
      that just because you cant smell it the air is OK. several gasses can do
      this. I put a respirator on in the first minute. H2S gets on your skin
      and hair and sticks there plus your clothing. its putrid.
