Just Brilliant! ❤ This Refold youtube channel is an asbolute gold mine for making the language learning workflow more efficient. I was about to embark on writing a tool that does what VocabSieve does and I'm glad I found this video. Now I can cut to just using it and make some pull requests along the way
Thanks for the video. The kindle part is very impressive and important for me, who reads and looks up as my major "mining". Just a warning to people who are trying to use this: you need to go into your reading settings and turn this feature *on* ('remember dictionary lookups') for it to work.
Thank you so much for sharing this tool with us, and I thank the creators especially for creating this tool. It will be useful, and I'm grateful it exists
It's a great concept and I salute the developer(s) for all of the hard work and care that has gone into its development. That said, as of now there remains significant room for improvement. It doesn't speed up the process of looking up words that are poorly covered by Wiktionary (of which there are many). In this case the user will still have to conduct laborious manual lookups in third-party dictionaries. It also doesn't auto-romanize words written in non-Latin script. Forvo pronunciations are also not reliably added to cards. All in all, it is not yet significantly better than just manually copying and pasting words and sentences into online translators and dictionaries and then pasting the outputs into Anki directly.
The creator is focused on European languages since that's their learning focus (and they often function the same). I don't think it is very good for Japanese though due to the lack of spaces. Maybe you should try it out to see if it works! HOWEVER, you can also look into Iago. They're mostly focused on Japanese and have some lovely tools made for it. And, if I'm not mistaken, Yomichan is the "go to" for a reason. - Ben
Thank you for the great tutorial! Very easy to follow, I'm also learning spanish at the moment, makes sentence mining much easier :) I will also try to export the cards in the same format as the refold spanish 1k deck, since i'd like it if they all have the same layout
this is awesome!! i’d be interested in any tools/workflows for mobile (specifically ios) as i’m not able to get to my computer much and find myself immersing on my phone 99% of the time
I've also been trying to figure out better ways to immerse on mobile, but it's been a harder challenge than I expected. Other than all in one apps, there isn't a ton that's "super great." I honestly just end up using UA-cam and the Kindle app for the most part. It's a video I want to make at some point, though! - Ben
I'm completely grateful with this refold method for study of languages, like It allows me to learn any another language without keeping any money into fake courses So, in brief thanks
vocab sieve tells me "Cannot read highlights. Make sure that your clippings file is in the right place, and its length is a multiple of 5" when I try to import from Kindle. Any idea what this means?
about vocab sieve reader - I can't get it to work on my win 10 machine. Everytng else works just fine including anki integration. When I click "Reader" I get a window which only contains "Books" and nothing else. No place to insert text or to click anything
Hi, I followed your instructions to the letter but when I click on "Add not [cmd-S]" this message pops up: "Failed to add note cannot create note because it is emptyAnkiConnect must be running to add notes. If you wish to only add notes to the database (and export it as CSV), click Configure and uncheck 'Enable Anki' on the Anki tab". Also vocabsieve isn't being added to Note Types. AnkiConnect shows in my adds-on though. Don't really know how to go about fixing this issue as I've reinstalled vocabsieve multiple times but still doesn't work.
I had this problem too. It mysteriously resolved itself, and then reappeared randomly. The concept and ambition of this app are admirable, but the product is not yet ready for primetime.
I've downloaded it. But when I try to open it the following message popped up: "vocabsieve cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified...macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware". Not sure what to do as this warning is pretty scary.
That's what happens with all programs that aren't from "big developers." It's definitely a bit scary when it pops up, but in this case, it's nothing to worry about. I know the dev and it's legit. There should be a button that says something like "see more" and then a "run anyway" (or something of that sort). I hope that works for you!
Hi! It seems to be different now. Do you have an updated tutorial on how to install it? I want to use this for Russian. Do you know of a website where you can paste a word in Russian and it gives you the phonetic symbols? Thank you!
Unfortunately this tool doesn't seem to work at all with Japanese. For some reason, it fails to find any word in wiktionary (even though wiktionary does indeed have the page for the word), and the pronunciation dictionary doesn't work either. It seems to only work with Google Translate, which isn't particularly useful.
Yeah, it's not great with Asian languages in general. Try Yomitan. It works awesome for Japanese. I have a tutorial as part of my sentence mining video. Also, Vocabsieve has had a bug with Wiktionary for several weeks now, which is very annoying. Sorry for your trouble.

I have been looking for a tool to make flashcards from Anki lookups. This is perfect. Thank you!!!
Somehow missed this video. This will be very helpful for improving my Japanese reading practice.
Manual is all the way to go for me. I can add and edit to my likings

Would this work for Japanese as well? I'm starting to read more so this would be such a good thing to use!

The links to the vocabsieve websites in the description are dead. Has this tool been abandoned?

Glad it was helpful! Be sure to check out my other video on Anki (I know it's a bit long, but there's good info in there!) Good luck!
That thing is amazing, thank you for sharing it!

Does anyone know how to solve this? I was really excited, but it seems like I'm not gonna be able to use vocabsieve ;/

Took the time to install it and then I realized it doesn't support Ancient Greek
I wonder if it also can make cards from text on webpages?
