Movement for the Masses: Bodytribe for Beginners (like, say, my family)

  • I admit to having a bias in believing that everyone had access to proper movement education. But my travels and wanderings, which find me teaching (and learning!) all over this country, have made blatant a strong truth. With just a quick glance, it is easy to see how the fitness industrial complex is actually failing in it's recruitment program, if there could be a case that such a program exists. All I needed for proof at this failure was to spend time with my family.
My brilliant, wonderful kin are part of the 85% of our society that is not involved in movement culture to any degree. So the usual online offerings of, oh, just about any website or video channel (including my own) isn't going to do much to help them begin their journey. The fitness industry as a whole has no proper welcome wagon, instead believing that shiny new toys or flashy programs are the answer to recruiting the non-movers. Nope. Not quite.
So here's some thoughts and ideas for that important part of the 85% who share blood or marriage ties with me. And it is an open invitation to anyone who finds the fitness industry not quite offering what they're looking for. Ironically, our discussions and examples in this video are also basic movement patterns and ideas the 15% might want to consider returning to, since they've quite possibly embraced redundant movement patterns in their workouts that aren't particularly endearing to their joints in the long run. Yup, the fitness industry is actually pretty poor at teaching movement, period. Not just to beginners.
So this is the intro video to this series, meaning it's a bit long. They get shorter and more specific from here, promise. But I've got things to say... you know me.

You know what would be so cool with a video like this? An index!
    7:32 Arm twists
    7:53 Shoulder play
    8:32 Big arm circles
    etc.

Great vid and concept Chip. I've been following you for a while now and, as I go into and out of better fitness, I've been hoping to see scaled down versions of the body tribe methods. When I'm in better fitness, I can follow along, clumsily, with your more vigorous vids, but had always wanted to see something that was more geared toward "mere mortals" who are trying to improve from a humble starting place (even if we'd had better fitness in the past). Age, arthritis, injuries and plain old lazy lay offs from working out can conspire to return us to humble beginnings. It's nice to see some of these more gentle protocols that we can use to ramp back up. Thanks so very much and happy new year!

Thanks for this. I looked in because of your newsletter 2015. I'm almost 60 and joint/spine issues have gradually restricted the type of workout I can safely do, so I get discouraged. It's refreshing to be included in the conversation.

Really good presentation - someone not comfortable with movement education might do better with this than a lot of other formats. Passing this on to friends and family. Thank you!

Great video! I'm under thirty but that item reminds me of what we put in Beyblade spinning tops or some sort of frisbee-like thing, for dogs. I really enjoy your channel.
