Burpees: Un-Stupid Them

  • I'm fed up. Enough with the 'how-to videos that turn the burpee into some sort of flop fest. No wonder people hate 'em so much. And if we stop performing it like spineless spawning salmon, it might actually be a true performance enhancer. Instead we slop it up like movement morons, using the burpee as simply a tool to beat the shit out of ourselves.
    How about teaching and performing it better? With some practice (and some integrity), the burpee can be transformed from a big pile of movement crap (the popular version) to an actual athletic skill builder.
    And here's the kicker: When you decide it's time to treat it like a real skill and make the effort to get stronger with it, you can ACTUALLY DO IT FASTER, if you're stuck in the do-more-faster-always workout camp. We explain that a bit later in this video.
    Or, you can practice it as a movement enhancer and build on it into something a bit more creative and fun... but we talk about that quite a bit in other videos.

    notes to self:
    1. drop to a wider powerlifter squat
    2. engage ass and lats in pushup
    3. aim knees OUTSIDE elbows when transitioning from pushup to squat
    4. cadence can be an 8-count exercise (return to standing as last count). (my style)
    11:25 demonstration, 11:45 prep work.

    My first comment ever on UA-cam. Yep. This one made it. Thanks Chip. Exactly what I needed-making the burpee chippier and much more powerful and stronger.

    and I can say no one at the Y where I've gone for 5 years does burpees like this but I am going to slow down and try.

    Thanks for bringing up the sprawl. Because even at the bottom of a sprawl there's much more core tension than there is when someone flops. You're supposed to be able to pop back up into an athletic stance from a sprawl if it's going to be useful in combat sports. Good video Chip. But that goes without saying from this channel.

      AWesome! Have fun. There is a Burpee program, which is actually a movement and mobility program disguised as a burpee template, on my website, if ya get the hankerin'.
      Lemme know how the challenge goes! Also, there are a few burpee variety videos strewn about my little page here.

    I seriously say this on every video but you deserve a ton more subscribers and views than you get. Best informative videos out there atm. Looks like i've been doing burpees all wrong! Time to change that - may also be one of the reasons i have an intercostal muscle strain now, once i'm able i will be practising these the right way.
    Any tips on breathing correctly when exercising? I believe this is also an issue i have which has caused my intercostal muscle strain.

    Came over here from that horrible crossfit video on how to do the burpee. It got me wondering if I was wrong but then I watched your video and realized that it´s all good...crossfit is so strange, they seem to take the purpose out of every single movement. WHY?

    • @Bodytribechip
      @Bodytribechip  4 роки тому

      Something I call the fabulous fitness fallacy. We know that the process of properly building movement skills makes us tired. So many folks in fitness have convinced themselves that, because they're getting tired, their somehow building movement skills.

    Great vid. Will work on form. I am training muay Thai and there is often a 100 burpees 'warm up'. No one is doing correctly including myself. It's just getting sloppy

      About 15 years ago I was challenged to 100 burpee race with, of all people, some prisoners. Not only did they beat everyone in my gym, but they had beautiful form. That was a big learning experience. They were getting so much more from their focused training than the slop most folks fall into.

    Coach! Thank you for this video. 1st, "the flop", super funny (cuz it's so sadly true). 2nd, super informal. I started a personal 30 days of 30 burpee's this month (September 2020). 3 1/2 weeks in, Up to 40+ burpee's now a day. Was loving it. But of course now I'm having knee pain.. so I'm now focusing on form and not reps. I'd rather have 5 great ones than 10 "okay" ones.

    And what are you supposed to do when you don't have enough strength to hold this form? I have been doing CF since September and struggle with burpees. Especially when I get tired. Getting down is fine, but getting up again isn't; I'm not explosive enough to consistantly do as you describe and seem to end up with my knees under me and then have to push myself up with my hands. Is it just a case of keep working at it or?

    • @Bodytribechip
      @Bodytribechip  5 років тому

      See the variation towards the end, what we call the step burpee. A burpee is a progression from a plank stepping into a squat, then, over time, jumping into a squat.

  • @Monkeytail
    @Monkeytail 7 років тому +1

    Running for fitness, to catch the bus, to run away from angry dog, to win a speed game by foot.
    Burpees for fitness, to practice 'iconic' movement patterns, to duck away when you hear an explosion, to win the CrossFit games.
    You can't do a 'burpee' wrong or good when you don't know your motive to do them. It's the intention, or standards, that sets the perspective/context. Form (how) follows function (intention/motive/why).

    • @Bodytribechip
      @Bodytribechip  7 років тому +1

      Most folks don't define their purpose, and if they do, their purpose is usually directed by the motives of the fitness industrial complex, where the ideas of looking better and getting tired seem to be the key motivators, instead of actually acquiring skills. Therefore training hours are wasted working out, rather than actually training.

    • @Monkeytail

      Thanks for the reply!
      "Move in many ways for many reasons" …
      Training for a
      Working out for b
      Physical exercise to c
      Moving because d
      I don't see why 'working out', driven by third party motives or not, is an exception on the above motto :)

    • @Bodytribechip
      @Bodytribechip  7 років тому

      Move in many ways for many reasons can be satisfied by your scenario, but most folks don't move in ways, or for many reasons. Modern fitness programming is more restrictive than explorational.
