Kevin Sipos The sad thing about rock nowdays is that it has gone in a direction where things like this 1.7 million people concert wont ever happen, its just the nature rock has taken. But id say it has its beauty nonetheless. Rock aint asleep, its just not selling out stadiums and starring on covers. Rock bands are indie and alternative right now, maybe one day they will go back to their former glory and status of gods.
In 91 these were the baddest MFs in the motherland. Saw them with Crue and ACDC but in 91 Metallica was untouchable. Lightning in a bottle like when Jordan played for the Bulls. Watching them in they early 90s was like going to church and going to war all at once. Just everything!
Free Bird ~ Beautifully stated! I've always said Music is the Universal Language (as is Food!). There must be one million in attendance! This looks to me as the largest concert crowd ever! Does anyone know of a larger one? Certainly not a happier one!
This was shortly after the Soviet Union collapsed. Hetfield said the army personal was all serious and standing still for about the first 3-4 songs. After that they started to throw off their hats and unbottoned their uniforms and just started enjoying the concert. hahahah
Nicholas Anthony yeah, I just watched that interview the other day. Imagine living your entire life under an oppressive communist regime, where freedom of expression and individuality was all but stomped out with intimidation and violence...and then all of a sudden being free to do all of that and at a Metallica concert, your first rock concert ever, with 1M other people in the same situation. The energy in that crowd could power a small country!
2019: you need to have the license to fly a drone because it can hurt somebody. Russia 1991: Freakin post soviet helicopter flying over million people's heads.
is this the most legendary concert of all time? For both musical, political and humanitarian reasons? So insanely epic with Russian soldiers and helicopters swirling around. Finally the soldiers succumb to the epicness of Metallica and starts jumping like the rest of the crowd. I can't even imagine what James and the others of Metallica must have been feeling on that stage.
Holy crap. The lead singer looks like even HE doesn't believe he's singing in front of that many people! I've never seen a crowd that big before. That's just amazing.
Thanks to these cool guys who held and performed in Russia, it was just great. It seemed that the disagreements between East and West had come to an end. And a new page of good and friendly relations began. It is a pity that relations between countries are in such a bad state today. We all can only hope that relations between our countries in the future will be much better than they are now. Greetings from Russia Moscow. Peace.
This concert meant so much in history. The Russians get their first glimpse of Western popular culture and the children of the Western world saw that the people of the former USSR were not so different from them and certainly not the enemies they allways thought they were. They just enjoyed a good time too.
So your think those hundreds of thousands people who moshed there, headbanging, wearing metal atributics heard there heavy metal for the first time? Like when this gig was announced they had no clue what kind of music was gonna be played there? By that time the soviets already had their own metal scene. That crowd came there for metal.
Can you just imagine how incredible this must have been from Metallica's perspective? Like, LOOK HOW MANY FUCKING PEOPLE THERE ARE! That would have been unreal knowing they were all there for YOU, and see them rocking so hard to the music YOU'RE playing. It's no wonder they sounded so raw and perfect this concert, feeding off that much energy has got to be so fun for a band.
I cant imagine, I get jacked at 45 years old watching this on youtube. Imaging being in the prime of your life and shredding for a crowd like that. How did they not snap their strings from playing too hard with all the adrenalin they must haveve been feeding on?
I came back to this video because I was telling my bf how if I had a time travel machine I would go on all the epic concerts I missed because I wasn’t born yet. So ofcourse I went along and showed him this toplister. I’ve been to a Metallica concert tho but imagine that possibility of time travel. If i had to pick one constant subject in my time travel it would be music. Going to a place you know the best musicians came from, visiting Kingston in the rocksteady times or Seattle in the 80s or 90s. Dreamy

A. Nilla-or The thing with rock it goes to sleep for a long time and then comes back louder and better. I hope we have better bands.
Alejandro Cortes Morales Dude GNR have sold out concerts.
***** not to 1.6M crowd at 1 gig, that's what I meant.
A. Nilla-or But we still love don't we that's what counts. That there are sparks here and there right?
Seeing those masses of humanity being set free..... Just blows my mind and saddens the HELL OUT of me that they EVER had to suffer like that.
I will never forget watching this for the first time in 2003. Still watching in 2024.
The best metal band of all time.
2:26 Dude came from middle earth just to be on that concert.
Wtf 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👏👏🤘
BRO THIS GUY WROTE A COMMENT UNDER THIS VIDEO 😂😂😂
Smegol
Looks a bit like Robert Trujillo imo
💀
We need a concert like this when this pandemic is over
The flu pandemic has not ended. And no ones give a fuck. Asymptomatic diseases looks like big screen in Orwell 1984.
It never started for the brave.
Holy fuck these replies are scary
Nihad Asadli I know 🤣😂
@Shaggy Rogers lol
One of the best - if not the best - performance of Enter Sandman of all time!!🤘🤘
most badass concert in human history
no fucking mobile phones. JUST FUCKING HEADBANG!
you don't see headbanging like this at concerts anymore, simply because people are afraid they will drop their fucking phone..
You right,man!!!
Then you're not going to the good concerts.
You should stop going to Justin Bieber's concerts then and attend some good shows.
well ya it's lame ppl don't do it anymore, but the upside of phones, the band is getting a lot of publicity because of cameras
My dad told me that he went to this concert a week before I was borned.
What a lucky bastard.
Right
@Samuel Carr no I didn't.
It's my dad not my mom.
If you went you would prob be deaf😂
How wild had that been? It had to be awesome
Borned?
Nothing would ever come close to this! That intro! Wow!
In 91 these were the baddest MFs in the motherland. Saw them with Crue and ACDC but in 91 Metallica was untouchable. Lightning in a bottle like when Jordan played for the Bulls. Watching them in they early 90s was like going to church and going to war all at once. Just everything!
A Soviet crowd cheering on an American band.
Wars may hold us apart, but music brings us all together.
Free Bird ~ Beautifully stated! I've always said Music is the Universal Language (as is Food!).
There must be one million in attendance! This looks to me as the largest concert crowd ever! Does anyone know of a larger one? Certainly not a happier one!
Free Bird Exactly
Suzi Bailey-Pethtal there is about 1.5 to 1.6 million at this concert
Anthony Ta ~ I'd've died and gone to Metal Heaven to have been a part of that! Absolutely Spectacular & Captivating!
I still adore them!
Suzi Bailey-Pethtal there was even heavenly musuc at the beginning
Lmao the people in the back probably heard it minutes later
people in the front are deaf now
@sol there is no back
sadly there is no back just moreeeeeeeeeeee
There were multiple repeater speakers throughout
@SOL
Holy hell. They must have felt like absolute rock gods up there.
Best example of music brings people closer...remember this was Moscow not Manhattan yet so much of admiration
This happened over 30 years ago. This clip was posted more than 10 years ago....
and it still has more energy than anything new could ever have.
True
Good old 90s
ACDC RIVER PLATE STADIUM 2009 BUENOS AIRES
People were People back then not NPC's
Let's face it, anything new cannot match this or the late 80's, early 90's!!!
Dude seeing the energy in the crowd… IMAGINE HOW BRUTAL THOSE MOSH PITS WERE😬
Agree 👍 😊
yes 50 people died this day
@Zx17OPv57i hospitalized not died
@@Zx17OPv57ihospitalizations, not fatalities. But yea with 1.6 million people 50 deaths is astronomically low
Что такое мошпиты?
The Best concert at history 🗽
Noone will ever accomplish something like this again!
You know it was a good time when even the police were headbanging with you.
not even the police, it was the red army. even better lol
Yup- look at those Russkies rock out , whoa.
@@johnschauder You won't have to imagine it, if AOC gets her way.
2019: you need to have the license to fly a drone because it can hurt somebody.
Russia 1991: Freakin post soviet helicopter flying over million people's heads.
Lmao, fuck it dude.
That helicopter was still Soviet, btw.
There goes communism
USSR was dissolved in December 1991. This was a real SOVIET heli, not a post-soviet one.
It is a Soviet helicopter, it looks like a Mil Mi-2 to me.
It's what rock is all about. Keeping the world together. Most amazing video and concert ever.
is this the most legendary concert of all time? For both musical, political and humanitarian reasons? So insanely epic with Russian soldiers and helicopters swirling around. Finally the soldiers succumb to the epicness of Metallica and starts jumping like the rest of the crowd. I can't even imagine what James and the others of Metallica must have been feeling on that stage.
Rockstars: "We sold out a stadium!"
Metallica: "We sold out a military airfield."
👀
Naw they sold out whole god damn country
@@Kippnod exactly my first thought when I read that comment. It was over for the Soviet Union after this performance 🤣
@@krissanchez4816 think of it as the end credits of the ussr
technically speaking they didn't sell out anything because it was free hehe
Well, them and AC/DC
Holy crap. The lead singer looks like even HE doesn't believe he's singing in front of that many people! I've never seen a crowd that big before. That's just amazing.
more mind-blowing is James Hetfield was a shy introvert lol
@@acap4395 Alcoholica
Yeah it's parallel universe shit...
It was like 1.2 million people. One of the biggest crowds for a rock show ever.
1.6 million
Thanks to these cool guys who held and performed in Russia, it was just great. It seemed that the disagreements between East and West had come to an end. And a new page of good and friendly relations began. It is a pity that relations between countries are in such a bad state today. We all can only hope that relations between our countries in the future will be much better than they are now. Greetings from Russia Moscow. Peace.
We can only wish brother 🇺🇸 🤝🏻 🇷🇺 better friends than enemies
❤PEACE IS POSSIBLE W THE SANDMAN❤RFK JR 2024❤
The efforts made in post production to capture 41 mill of us ... as impressive as this song!
Can you imagine how loud their equipment would have to be to cut over that much noise from the crowd?
All those tall buildings in the crowd are speakers
@@dirtytreerat14 lol they really constructed a whole infrastructure for this concert
PA was not loud enough.Too wide area. Impossible. But feeling was unbelievble.
@@atgwiuz everyone there probably has permanent hearing damage those speakers are fucking three storys tall
Probably as powerful as a car.
@@mihanich agreed, even if russians had their metal, in early 80s soviet propaganda (KGB) showed rock-metal and other west culture to destroy USSR
Nicely said.
@@mihanich They thought they were attending a Michael Bolton concert but they quickly adapted.
Most of the crowd does look lost tho haha
This always brings a smile to my face. Nations, languages, barriers of any kind, all stripped away by music.
This is the greatest concert off all time, closed and era of history and started a new one. Future history after cold war.
And you don't know anyone. I sat with Putin last night. We getting the black dogs now for game
@@firstimpressionss ?
They probably had like 50 Russian girls each that night lol
i think it was on Joe Rogan podcast where James said that he has never so many people at one place anywhere since then
I cant imagine, I get jacked at 45 years old watching this on youtube. Imaging being in the prime of your life and shredding for a crowd like that. How did they not snap their strings from playing too hard with all the adrenalin they must haveve been feeding on?
If time travel is invented this is on the bucket list
Can I join ya? I'll be good, I promise.
Its has been, thats why the crowd is so big
for sure on the top of bucket list !!!
Dreamy
Save one place for me ❤️
I can feel adrenaline rush thru my screen 33 years later.. I can't imagine what it was like to be on that stage that day. Probably the highest feeling a man can achieve.
HOLY SHIT...The unimaginable energy produced from that moment must have been insane!
I only wish I could have been there...
I grew up in a forsaken village in Russia and when I was 7 (in 1997) I knew Metallica, yet I didn't know who the president of Russia is. THAT is how popular Metallica is, for those who had no idea. There was no internet there, no social media, still Metallica was loved and present.
Orch LOL I would rather have a president who was accused of that then let a child trafficker/rapist be my president.
So to you nothing else mattered .../lol!
Привет, мой друг.
Orch ....Well, If you know nothing else, just know your libtard lefty Killary tv lies like hell to folks abroad and here in America as well....The elitists corruption is off the charts of insanity....Trump is a great President and Killary and ilk belong under a prison, she is corrupt to the bone, her entire bogus political career is nothing but crimes against everyone....
I grew up in New Jersey and didnt know who the governor was but I knew Metallica...thats how unpopular the governor was...
The fact that military were needed to control the crowd is stunning
El brayan qebin Quispe condori Tercero your face are much more stunning i think
TehTarikAis 69 i know, i am extremely beautiful
The military were enjoying it as much as everyone else lol
Lol, looks like most of them said "f#@& a security detail" and started partying with the crowd.
Jajajajaj esa foto no la veía como desde el 2012
This will go down as one of the greatest events in world history
Metallica fans range in age from teens to those in their 70’s. Bunch of badasses is what they are. 🎶🤘😖🤘❤️✨✨✨
