I loved this one! Made me remember the times before my granda passed away. It's a very delicate movie, made me tear up a lot just watching the family come together.

Just watched this today on a whim, it was a beautiful movie that I definitely appreciated more as I sat with it. *SPOILERS*
I did not like the choice of the empty room shot at the end at first, but as I sat with it, I appreciated the continuation of the bug motif, and the shot of the scorpion felt like it represented the 'sting of death' that cancer brings. I think the ending would have potentially been better with the final close-up of Sol preparing to blow out the candles, but I appreciate the final shot more now that I've had time to digest it. I started crying when Sol went into her fathers' room for the first time, and was initially embarrassed until I looked around and realized half the theater was trying just as hard as me to conceal their tears, lol. It was definitely a beautiful and moving piece of film, and I loved how seamlessly we are integrated into these characters' lives and how they just jump off the screen; Aviles truly has an innate talent for storytelling, I feel there is a 'show don't tell' essence to the character-building that makes the intricacies of everyone's personalities feel so natural and nuanced. Anyways, that's enough, I just really wanted to get my feelings on this film down somewhere, and I had no one to talk to about it lol.

Also, was wondering; what did you take away from Tona giving Cruz the paintings? Was that some sort of cleansing/coping with his death, or did he do this simply to pay Cruz?

I definitely interpreted the movie more through Sol's eyes than anyone's, like even when we don't see her for a little, the story revolved around Sol more than Tona to me. I think one of the most beautiful shot sequences was the shots of Sol handling the snails followed by Tona handling the mantis; it represented the gentle nature and kindness he passed on to his daughter, and exemplified their connection without showing them interact yet. I think you can tell great stories simply through someone's hands, and I guess we also see this with the way the grandfather cares for his tree. I also like the details with the tamarind seed gift, you can see how much they are all in different places mentally at this point; Tona sees the beach with the sunset, he's ready to give up, while his wife sees nothing but rain and grief, and, tragically, Sol simply sees the smiley face, because this is her first time in, presumably, a long time in which she gets to have both of her parents' with her together. I want to cry just thinking about it lol, I really do feel for poor Solecita. Anyways, though, I did quite like your video, and I appreciated the comments about the totems especially because I did not even begin to consider what they meant in the scheme of the film for some reason. I think you touched on all the important points in your video, and I dropped you a subscription.

Great point about the scorpion. The scene that made me tear up was when Sol hugged her mom and dad . That was their last hug together. The way the family was shot felt very natural and I could see my family in theirs . Their conversations and even the different personalities of all the family members felt so real

Thank you for the subscription and for the insightful comments. This is the type of movie that really does show and not tell. The more I think about it the more I pick up on. the point about sol gentle nature is wonderful .
