Yeah that first one annoyed me too. Seeing so many people (with likely only a cursory understanding of 40k) so confidently state that the WE vanguard was wrong because berserkers "don't use ranged weapons" was bizarre. No, Khorne does not disdain guns, he disdains use of the warp, because it is the act of stealing power instead of using your own strength or ingenuity to get disproportionate results for minimal effort. Most Khorne worshippers just prefer melee because they're too irrationally full of rage to do anything more complex than run forwards and try to hit things as hard as possible.
If a gun is good enough for Kharn, it's good enough for any rage-driven Khornate. Khorne even puts up with the warp with the Blood Pact sorcerers (I personally imagine it's because the one power they're mentioned to use doesn't kill people, it just tells you where the people you want to kill so you avoid his main issue of cheating the kill).
An E-tool or an entrenching tool is standard issue for every soldier. The E-tool killed more people in WW1 than actual bayonets. A shorter weapon is more effective at close quarters environments like trenches. It may not be their primary but it would have definately been an effective choice. Also it's cool.
The only Guard regiment that I can imagine using shovels for close combat is the Steel Legion since the Voss Pattern Lasgun is A LOT shorter than other patterns and therefore not a very great bayonet attachment weapon. It would be like mounting a bayonet on an MP5.

I bet battlefield 1 also had a hand in the shovel boy meme. Also, back when the world eaters were the Warhounds and before the nails, they were known as a highly disciplined fighting force. @@CursedRolls Thanks. I like that you mentioned the siege of vraks novel. In one scene, the Kriegs basically panicked when they saw world eaters among them. So it turns out that in order to put 13 km behind it in 11 minutes, a Leman Russ has to carry itself at a Leopard 2's top speed. Possibly just an author deciding to throw in the number 13, then looking up how fast a modern tank could go the distance?
Probably. There were super early leman russ cross section pictures which mentioned that the russ used ceremic inserts in their armor, which is a modern MBT composite armor layout before the material was changed again to plasteel/ceremite. Another factor in shovels being used heavily, they're cheaper than swords, and easier to repair.
