Even when you’re used to towing you can make mistakes. My late father scrapped our caravan on a bridge in Wales. I’ll never forget the sound it made! 😫

Your poor father. Its not a good feeling. I was trying to reach a restaurant in France on our way to the ferry. The roads were so small that I had to make sure the back of the caravan didn't hit any second-floor balconies. It was a relief when we were out!

TinTent I imagine it was! I think I was about twelve or thirteen the day my dad scrapped the caravan. It wasn’t too badly damaged; just the lower door panel ripped off! It sounded a hell of a lot worse than it was. When we got home after the holiday it was interesting listening to my dad tell that story time and time again to friends, family and some of the neighbours! 😜

Very relaxed atmosphere helped. I was like you and on my first tow with a large Hobby I did the fatal mistake of filling up the on-board water tank and loaded the van with out thinking about weight distribution. No wonder it snaked as I drove. 30 years later I still check all water is out of the van, even the boiler before moving and that heavy items are on the floor over the axles. Was the car an automatic? I am interested because my very first tow car was a Honda with a really poor automatic that changed up and down every couple of seconds. Since then I have always gone for a manual. However we are now waiting to take delivery of a new Defender and Alicante Grande Estoril. The Defender only comes with an automatic box so I have a few reservations about it. I hope autos have improved since our last one. Any advice greatly appreciated. Stay safe, Guy.

The car Jazz & I used was an automatic and my own car is also an automatic. Older automatic gearboxes were pretty poor but they are so much better now. Given the choice now, I'd probably choose an automatic over a manual when towing

We started and finished at the Bailey factory where Health & Safety insists on hi-vis. I thought I'd remove mine as soon as we got in the car!
