Disgusting attempt at history revision but I've read the archive news papers from Brazil that detail the three against one ambush of Rufino Dos Santos by three Gracies armed with a pipe.
Rest in peace Rufino Dos Santos.
I loose respect for anyone whom defends the cowardice actions of Helio, Carlos and George .
The Valente brothers are relatives of the three cowards whom ambushed one catch wrestler with a pipe and permanently crippled him for life simply cause he posed a threat to their family jiujitsu hustle by defeating Carlos and potentially stealing students from Gracie jiujitsu to learn Catch Wrestling.

This was kind of disappointing. Although I'm glad for more people to discuss this topic, this comes across as highly biased and anecdotal. It's very dismissive of Gracies committing a crime then using sociopolitical influence to essentially evade justice. Unfortunately, the only extant and readily available resource internationally seems to be opinion and story based on hearsay, although some resources are still out there. BJJ practitioners and fans online frequently seem to work under what appears to be the assumption that people just want to smear the image of the Gracies or BJJ in general. I think it's more dishonest and damaging to the Gracies and BJJ to deny events like this happening or telling very one-sided accounts. Providing no tangible or credible evidence and using the 'members of the Gracie family say it didn't happen that way' doesn't come across as trustworthy. Poor Dos Santos. I'm sorry, Chadi, please do better.

The guy in the video is one of the Valente Bros. If you observe their behaviour in their videos pertaining to the Gracies it is notably cultish. It is as if the Gracies could never commit anything wrong. They either have an excuse for them or say the Gracies won. One police officer during that time pointed out how the Gracies got away with their crime. The pardoning of course from the president, who had a son that was a student of the Gracies.

@@alanguages I was aware of the Valentes, but had frankly forgotten about them. This kind of apologist rhetoric exists in numerous styles, organizations, etc., so sometimes I forget names. It's by no means right and is very much in line with cult mentality. Unverifiable claims and unwavering support of figureheads with a shady, and even criminal, past is at best naive and at worst intellectually dishonest and morally bereft. It saddens me that someone like Chadi would give someone like this a platform and not even really contest statements and positions that defend the seemingly indefensible. But, like a cult, leaders of such bases must appear infallible. I don't accuse all Gracie or BJJ fans/practitioners of this mentality, but posit the question to anybody who is at least somewhat versed in their history, but continues to insist they are flawless.

Rufino Des Santos is a legendary Catch As Catch Can Wrestler….
Compare this with the *DIDOS Piece* which presents Primary Documentation & Archived Newspapers from this time …. All we have here is someone’s retelling “of a Story” that he’s heard his entire life. This is an example of an *ANECDOTAL OPINION* No evidence, no documents. Go & check out & compare the DIDOS YT piece & you’ll see who’s lacking a certain credibility & veracity. *Chadi how is this not a true hit piece against Rufino?*

So Helio was a sick and weak child and didn't train until 1930 and 1932 he was the one chosen to fight for the family? Physically weak and with just 2 years of training? Sounds very strange!
I heard other say he was never a weak person, that is is just marketing for promoting Jiu Jitsu are made to work for a weaker smaller person against a bigger stronger. Yes i agree and believe Jiu Jitsu if trained and used well are a great method for that but all photos and videos i seen with Helio shows he is a healthy, tall and strong person.
Also that Gracie Jiu Jitsu was made to be a ground fighting style from start is also strange, you can see Helio get thrown many times in early matches, if the ground was his only area of fighting why didn't he go there more early, like Kosen Judo players. The GJJ Focus in Ground Fighting came later, and you can see most techniques already in the old Kosen Judo videos. Yes ofcourse i believe the Gracies Developed and promoted Ground Fighting Skills by the years but it is much more to the story than traditionally told.
I Learn, Teach and Train Jiu Jitsu and i try to understand as much as possible about GJJ, so I'm not at all against the Training Method, just the history that sounds strange and all stories, family disputes and different talks there as well.

How Helio Gracie with Carlos and George in a coward way attacked Rufino ! Valente brothers can defend this scumb4g but the truth is in Didos ducumentary and the book Geo Omori o guardião samurai. The coward brothers always defend this criminal family and he knows the truth !

The story of events doesnt even make sense at face value
So carlos loses the fight but his supposedly sickly less experienced little brother hospitalizes the guy
Oh and totally they just put him up to it and surrounded the guy but certainly they were much too honorable to get involved and attack him as a group 🙄 give me a break

    his family?
    Him?
I know he trained his student Euclydes Hatem Tatu?
For me, the mystery starts with Euclydes Hatem in photographs training with the graices or with them training together????
So what happened? Did his student forgive the graices for the attack on his trainer?????

If carlos was a student of maeda, then why did he show up at donato pires's school as beginner, who everyone knew was a student of maeda's, while nobody agrees carlos was? Why did pires say carlos was never maeda's student and that carlos was lying and that he wasn't who he was claiming to be as a grappler? Pires left town on business with carlos in charge of pires' kids beginner classes and returned to find carlos had convinced he was an expert and it was his school. Pires' school then ended up in gracie hands and that it the start of gracie jj. Why carlos and george hire geo omori to teach them and their students? The gracie brothers went to jail TWICE for stalking and gang attacking people.

  • @DylReadsHorror

Obviously I don't know the truth. I wasn't there, but I absolutely do not believe the Gracie version of the story. It just doesn't jibe with what we know about the Gracies nowadays. I think they have told a lot of tall stories to create their own fictional history.

So it was just an unscheduled discussion at night in an alleyway between 3 brothers and one guy who told some inconvenient truths about them after they promoted themselves as something they weren't, resulting in the three brothers going to prison for stalking and gang attacking him alone with weapons.
Not one of those guys could have been slightly competitive with dos santos in a one on one match. Dos santos would have gladly faced them one at a time in front of the whole city like a man. If helio's version is true, why stalk dos santos as a group and find him alone like predators? Why not prove yourself like a man? If helio could beat dos santos like he claims why not do it in front of witnesses to restore his deserved reputation? Because he couldn't, was a fraud, and a criminal predator, just like his brothers.

Chadi, ive always watched your videos and respected your deep historical research. But this video is pure crap. How can you say that didos video was a "hit piece but then post Valente, who is a relative of the gracies, story whos proof is " Helio told me he fought him one on one and i believe him" without pressing him. You literally posted a video explaining when this same man helio brought coffin to the fight against kimura. Everyone knows how culty gracie jiujitsu practitioners are so of course theyre gonna butt kiss their cult master helio. The gracies did the exact same thing to Joal Baldi. Now there is no doubt that didos video is bias but its far from a "hit piece". It has multiple sources that are contemporary where as the gracies side is "helio told me and i believe him". And judging by the fight Helio had with kimura i doubt he was able to viciously beat Rufino when his older brother couldnt even do it.
