- In the car enthusiasts’ circles, front-wheel-drive is WRONG wheel drive!
Worse acceleration, torque steer, understeer, and no drifting.
But… it’s not all bad.
Hey guys I’m Stype, and these are the Top 7 most impressive front-wheel-drive cars ever made!

"Can't drifting" -Top Cars TV
"Hold my beer Nakazato!!" -Shingo Shouji
i think its called powersliding.
@@bigsmoke5814 powerslide is when you slide under acceleration aka power. drift is a controlled slide . fwd can only drift . rwd and awd can powerslide and drift.
The case of Citroen Xantia Activa is like the Class Clown OUTSCORING THE FRICKING TOPPERS!
No drifting? I dispute that fact. My mate had a Volvo v40 estate. And he drifted that all the way around the Worcester park roundabout in Surrey with me in the passenger seat. I was too scared to soil myself.
All I said to him was "I forgot you were a rally driver"
Ok it was a Scandinavian flick, as opposed to power drift. But it was sideways all the way around the roundabout
Yes you CAN do that but it is a lot harder and much harder to control... I had FWD Opel Astra for 8 years and every winter I would try drifting and have fun and every winter I ended up in the ditch and had to get help 3 to 8 times a season. Then I got a Opel Ascona B and a Mercedes 190E where I would go sideways every turn when cornering and drift and have fun for 15 years without even 1 single time loosing control.
@@a64738 funny enough his first rally car was an astra. Never saw it with my own eyes, saw photos
People were drifting FWDs in Japan for decades now. It’s nothing new.
@@apexdna wawawawawa
@@AVI.D States had some good FF drifters too back in mid-2000s even won some drift events. There’s a dude in Australia with a Prelude that’s been tearing it down with the RWDs. FF drifting has existed for as long as the sport itself.
I think that the classic Mini and the Citroën Traction Avant would make a great addition to the list since they are sort of the pioneers of FWD cars
nobody really knows about the classic Mini outside of the UK. Unlike what you might think, most people in the western world have never seen one, never liked it, never wanted one. And the Mini is only a FWD pioneer in British eyes. For the rest of Europe, the 1948 Citroën 2CV, 1949 Saab 92, and EVEN the eastern bloc, 1957 Trabant P50, were all FWD, mass marketed, popular and came before the MINI. It's not even a pioneering hatchback like i keep hearing as well. It wasn't even a hatchback at all, to begin with. It's just another pos BMC product nobody is missing. It was not pioneering and it certainly wasn't great. Unless you are British, which then makes this fair enough.
@@watannen First of all I'm not from the UK and have to disagree with the fact that outside of the UK the Mini isn't know/liked because they have huge followings in a lot of countries and also outside of Europe. Second the Mini might not have been the first to have a transverse engine FWD set up, but it made the layout work with a bigger engine in a very small space. The 2CV, Trabant and Saab 92 were cars with simple engines and very poor performance while the Mini grew out to be a lot faster and with a lot of motorsport succes. That doesn't take away that the cars you listed are also great additions to the list. Third I know it isn't a hatchback I never claimed it was. Finally I contrary what you believe I think they are definitely great.
@@jme-racer4537 Nobody will take away the Mini's motorsport success, but that is also applicable to the Saab and Citroen. What the Mini did was to be the first production vehicle with a transverse water cooled 4 cyl. That's it. The brilliant (only for packaging) gearbox solution turned out to be less than brilliant because it shared the sump with the engine. So it was never used again, it was good for packaging, but bad for the engine. While the Mini did incorporate ingenious engineering, i think its importance is overrated. And it is not regarded as such outside of the UK (of course, everyone is aware of its existence). France, Italy and Germany were all acquainted to transverse FWD, but not one copied the Mini's shared sump. As such, it's probably one of the greatest FWD cars to the British, but it's importance is debatable to others
@@watannen Well, every car list that has been made can be debatable by others. What one person thinks is not always the same opinion as someone else. We can go back and forth with arguments a long time but let's agree to disagree and leave it at that.
@@jme-racer4537 Im Canadian and the 1969 Mini Cooper S should have AT LEAST been in the honorable mentions..... One of the most legendary FWD cars in the history of this planet.
My spouse is from Belgium and I met her there. She had an Xantia, a regular with an automatic and a diesel engine, company car. That car was AMAZING in that it could go down cobblestone streets in Brussels where I wouldn't take my current '14 Cayman S! And it could take them at stupid speeds, and you felt nothing. I even liked the way the car looked.
Citroen at the time wasn't a cheap brand, and they knew that their cars would sell in limited numbers in the United States. But the real blockage was the US's crazy crash requirements; They would have to crash 30+ cars of each model just to compete for a limited amount of sales, so that is why they aren't sold here.
Our crash test requirements need to be standardized to the European standards; That Xantia had 10 airbags. Yet, you cannot drive an Xantia on a Flori-Duh road unless it is 25 years old. But of course you ARE allowed to drive a golf cart on public roads in some counties in Flori-Duh, even if they have NO crash testing and NO airbags.

A f***ing Lancia…
Bro, lancia thema is a saab 9000, obviously not as safe but other than that it's the same car. And the neon srt-4 is a great car, but yes i am disappointed that there is no Volvo or Saab on the list.

One of my favorites will always be the Alfa 147 GTA. Not much thought went into actually making it go fast, but it sure as hell sounded awesome.
It was fast for a FWD car though at the time.

2008 Chevy Cobalt SS literally set a track record for the fastest FWD production car around the Nurburgring. That record wasnt broken until honda reintroduced the civic type r.... about 10 years later. To not even give it a honorable mention but talk about the Neon SRT is a crime. I did enjoy the video, all things considered.

My 05 Corolla might not be the most exciting car in the world, but it's a good daily driver regardless.
I wasn't expecting to see Lima, Peru here, but a Cadillac ElDorado convertible on the Costa Verde? Daaaaamn!. And the Costa Verde is a sort of highway that goes along the beach on the city, so yeah. Is a proper road for such yatch.

The CT-R not being on this list is a crime
Really fascinating list of cars i am a fan of all cars and i do enjoy daily cars and their sport versions too...but it was the first time i couldnt name one of the bonus cars 😢
Honestly front wheel drive is extremely fun if you know what your doing with your throttle inputs around corners with a mind that the car is very front heavy. No, it'll never be a supercar but you'd be surprised how quickly you can get a small front drive hatchback around a tight low speed corner if you enter it the right way. It has its place

I love the Integra and the Civic best front wheel drive JDM Cars in my opinion
3:32 Activa is a completely different experience. I had the opportunity to ride it a few times. It was a sports car on curves and a complete comfort vehicle on straight bumpy roads. I used my own sub-version Hydractive 2 Xantia for 9 years. I just changed the timing belt and clutch pads. Other than that, it was a very trouble-free vehicle. Unfortunately, I sold it to its new owner after being advertised for exactly 1 day.

NFS U had a regular Neon. Not the SRT4

Disagree with the Kadett. Engine was amazing but the chassis... let's leave it as "it wasn't good"...

I miss my 5th gen Honda Prelude with an aftermarket Quaife differential. I would accelerate for curves. Oh and that sweet VTEC sound. I banged shifts at redline for 11 years straight.
6:17 who cares about Drake vs Kendrick when this one's going down
Harry Miller built front drive race cars that DOMINATED the Indy 500 during the 20s and early 30s. He also designed the initial engine that he sold to Fred Offenhauser.
The Cord L29 was the first FWD car available to the public. The Cord 810 and 812 are legends.
The Oldsmobile Toronado pioneered GM's FWD luxury cars and bore the brunt of development. The Eldorado, while great, adapted what Olds had pioneered.
The original Morris Mini Minor, renamed the Mini, absolutely revolutionized small car design by using a transverse engine and FWD.
The Citroen DS series were groundbreaking when they debuted in 1955, so far ahead of their time. They weren't even Citroen's first FWD cars. That would be the Traction Avant.
This list, while interesting, is flawed.
Too bad the Renault Megane R26.R didn’t make it, but this list was tight as-is
There was the Spoon Civic EK9.
That weighed 900kg & had 260hp.
Plus it could rev to 11000rpm.
My mom was driving a rental Megane in Portugal like 20 years ago (maybe 15?) and my dad was like, " Hey, look at the speedo"

There is a fwd car that never gets mentioned in these videos and I don’t understand why the cobalt ss it’s 0-60 is the same as the neon srt4 at 5.4 but it could actually corner it held the record for fwd cars on the Nurburgring for awhile at 8.22.85. The neon srt4 does the Nurburgring in over 9 minutes and that one was modified.

You can drift with FDW (but its way harder and worse)
i love the fact that almost every car mensioned on your videos accelerates faster than mine, yet its the one amog all i drive that gives me the biggest sensations.
Btw, I find really cute the way americans pronounce coupé
Papa finally uploaded
No "Greatest" anything list can exist without a Lancia being on it.
Understeer vs Oversteer? Understeer is FAR safer! High performance AWD cars should heavily favor the front wheels because when traction is lost, the car is far more predictable and controllable. I owned a '92 Corrado SLC with the VR6 engine and it handled VERY well, while being completely predictable. There's a video where a Corrado SLC with 178 hp beats a similar year Toyota MR2 turbo around a track because the MR2 spun out. Those cars are twitchy, while the Corrado has been called the best handling FWD car ever built, and the car that should have been sold as a Porsche.
The problem with FWD is the transfer of weight to the rear springs during acceleration. This invariably results in less traction and slower 0-60 and quarter mile times. Torque steer in some cars is an issue as well, though the Corrado and several other FWD cars have tamed that effect to the point where it isn't an issue.
Great video!
PS: When I had my '92 Corrado SLC I wound up meeting on a road outside Orlando with a guy that I recognized who had a Type R and wanted to race. I screwed up the launch, but caught him half way through the quarter mile and passed him right at the end. I was about 3 mph faster....
2 seconds on the Nürburgring comes down to a coupe tenths on any other racetrack, which means its identical to a Murcielago, a Cayman GT4 and a frickin' Bugatti Veyron. And, BTW, @TopCarsTV, it is Mur-cha-la-go, not Mer-see-ya-laa-go.
It was a play on words, like Mar-a-Lago.
