  • Held on 9th July 2023, this show brought together a fascinating mix of cars from the timeline of the British Motor Corporation, British Leyland and into the Austin-Rover era. Favourites include a Ledbury Maestro that had driven all the way from Norway, a beautifully restored Austin A90 Atlantic, an A70 Hereford woodie, an array of TR7s and a South-African Austin Apache! Keep an eye out for ‪@idriveaclassic‬ and ‪@ProjectNigel‬
Sadly, we did suffer major sound problems on the day, so some footage is voiceover. We apologise to those we spoke to on the day.

I've stated this before but the first HubNut video I ever watched was one on a green Maestro van. I can't believe how quickly you managed to work your magic on the editing, was well worth the effort because that looked to be an amazing show to attend, such a variety of British manfacturing. Such a shame we don't still have that now.

Regardless of the sound issues still a great video! Saw many childhood favourites but I'd say my absolute favourites were the Maestro/Freelander test mule, the black MG Magnette and the Austin J4 camper. My dad had 2 J4 vans between 1968 and 1972, I can just about remember them. Not comfortable or fast but still it saddens me that there are so few left.

When I was 16 I did a few week's work experience at the local council office and someone said "they've got a few of those new Maestros on show in the shopping centre" so at lunchtime a few of us went to look at the wonderful new saviour of the British motor industry. Feels like decades ago.

We bought a brand new diesel Maestro in red back in 1993 to replace a dreadful FSO Panache. Loved it to bits and it never missed a beat. In the seven years we had it, I replaced one or two panel lamps. I think it had the Perkins 'O' series engine. I knew nothing of timing belts back then and never considered that they could fail. But it never did. We towed with it across the UK and France as well and it was a terrific towcar.

Allthough I'm into Citroëns it's a very enjoyable video to watch. Nice line-up of cars. I grew up late '70's into the 80's in a very small Dutch village but remember there was a Maestro, a Montego estate and also a Triumph Acclaim. The latter was owned by one of the 2 family doctors/GP's my village had. Interesting detail: The other GP drove a GSA at the time....😀The fact that I remember this, must mean I kind of have a soft-spot for British cars.

The cars of my youth, as my father worked at BLNetherlands until 1983. He had three Marina's, a Princess and a Maestro. My mother had an Allegro for a while and I had an Allegro too, my first second car, and a Rover 3500 SD1. I never bought them new, although I could have made use of his employee discount. I did consider a new TR7 and an MG Metro Turbo, but nothing came of that. Well, a new AlfaSud came of that, but that's another story.

A very enjoyable wander round with some added, unexpected Jowett content ( I'm biased as the Jowett factory, now a Morrisons supermarket, is only 4 miles from me). The interruption in live commentary worked a treat to be honest as the overdub had no background noise and it gave you time to edit your narration and include more info you may have forgot to add into the piece had it been live - no, don't apologise, all of the best TV documentaries include voice overs and dubbing. Great video Ian.

Another cracking video with great voiceover for the sound issues. This was definitely worth sharing. I remember as a kid when the wedge was released as the 18/22 series sold with different trims and detail changes under Austin, Morris and Wolsley badges if I recall correctly. A few years later they would all share the same body renamed the Princess with the 17/20 O series engines. British Leyland latterly BL Cars made a big effort to shout out the poverty spec cars as you mention but they probably cost more to make given the smaller volumes. Looking at the show cars Britain made some great designs but industrial action and quality issues combined with politics, poor management and crippling finances eventually killed it. Considering what was achieved over the final decades it was impressive but when the money runs out...... Anyway thanks for sharing.

I must tell you that I clicked on this video with a bit of trepidation, but I a thoroughly impressed, my friend. Even where you've needed to voice over a commentary, the information has been on topic and quite riveting - so much so that the 30-odd minutes went past and the video came to a close seemingly in half the time! Very very well done! Not many people can keep up that level of enthusiasm over a day's shooting or summon up a bit when having to overdub when technology fails, but you nailed it, mate. Lovely to see the range of vehicles and to see such a range of specs on view within each model. It's something we don't get to see in NZ even at the biggest shows for the likes of the Maestro, Metro or Honda-based Rover units, as they just did not sell in big numbers here. Always lovely to see the range of Triumphs on display and I do not think I have ever seen so many TR7 / TR8 examples in one place in my life - ever! I too have a huge soft spot for the Triumph big saloons and am currently going through the motions of selling my Stag in order to get myself a second 2500S to enjoy while I sort a few things on the one I've had for 6 years. There was such an array of years as well as makes and models at that show of yours that I too would have been spinning from one to the other in absolute rapt enjoyment of the occasion, just soaking up everything in one great BMC, BMH, BL, AR moment! Great to see so many UA-camrs there too - I even caught a glimpse of young Ed from Twin Cam in one shot and I'm sure Matt Furious must have been in there somewhere. A great watch, Ian. Many thanks for taking the time to sort through what footage you had and get some form of ontage for the day. It was well worth seeing. All the best.

A couple of interesting facts about the TR7. Michelotti styled the drophead coupe version, and DeLorean wanted to buy the rights from BL to produce a DMC version of the TR8 badged as a Healey when production ended. If only BL hadn't said no.....
