Schopenhauer said mediocrity and academia compliment each other. Not just wider society but academics hate intelligence as much ! I discovered that when i was doing my undergraduate or as you would say in America graduate degee many decades ago.
Excellent observations by which to examine oneself and other people in the coming year. I believe T Bailey Saunders translations of Schopenhauer and also of Harnack, were greatly praised in his life time and they certainly seem to read quite naturally, and not in a stilted manner, as so often with translations.
hey, great video. i wanted to note that it seems like the camera is unfocused, as in the book appears sharper than you. maybe the autofocus of the camera is turned on?
When you read this through an auto-biographical lens it's amusing to take it as Schopenhauer stating that the people who hate him secretly admire him. 😂
I wish you could also create a video reading Broch's book "The Death of Virgil". There is no audiobook available, in any language, for this book. Happy New Year Professor!
@@ChristopherAnadale I am a novice when it comes to Greek and Latin literatures. However, I have heard this book is considered a difficult read, particularly the last chapter; these difficult parts seems to be the most inspiring and beautifully written part! I took upon that challenge and purchased a copy. Looking forward to reading it, hopefully along you professor! Cheers!
That passage on hypochondria might work even with the modern definition of the word. Who's to say an obsession with imaginary physical ailments isn't a conscious manifestation of subconscious regret and/or remorse over the past?
This is so well explained. I just love it when someone does something simple really well. You are a talented academic professor.
Thanks very much! This has been an adventure.
Your Schopenhauer videos are an instant watch for me

Wow, Freud said ‘love and hate are the same thing’. We now see where that comes from.

I don’t feel comfortable in the world but I’m not sure I find everyone insipid.
Plz write everything as a textbox, its easier to read and it can be understood better, as we can pause and reflect !
