- NHL superstars Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin were drafted first and second in 2004, were teammates on the Russian national team, and were roommates during the Winter Olympics in Turin. But as the Capitals-Penguins rivalry properly reignited, so did a feud between these stars thanks to a fistfight in a Moscow nightclub. The pair would have to see each other often during the 2007-2008 regular and postseason, and rarely did it end with them exchanging pleasantries.

06-12 was maybe the best time ever to be a hockey fan. Watching the league build itself up.. after so many years of sitting in arenas so empty that when u yelled insults at the players it would echo throughout and DEF was heard,was def something to be apart of

Ovechkin and malkin both came from the KHL and both were 2 of the top runner ups for the top picks of the NHL draft. As I remember in the KHL both guys were heavily against eachother back than which eventually lead up to today. Russian hockey though is very underrated and should be given more credit. It’s crazy how to 2 guys made a huge impact on hockey. Both legends in my book.

@@lAmCanad1an Yeah, the Playoffs are rigged every year so Pittsburgh wins, they tried so hard in 2018, suspending Wilson, Backstrom and Burakovsky out with injury, but the Caps rallied right through lol! No MAF made a huge difference, too, but the Caps eventually rallied through him as well! Great year.

Fun fact about Claude Lemieux, after his career was over he was on a Spike TV show called "Pros vs. Joes" where former pro athletes faced off in challenges in their sports against non-pros. One of the contestants was a Red Wings fan and immediately started shit talking Lemieux both in the intro and before the event. In the event, a puck was dumped into the corner and the contestant and Claude would skate it to retrieve it, the winner being the guy who got the puck and carried it back out over the blue line. On the first go against the Wangs fan Lemieux dummied it a bit so the guy got the puck first, and then viciously two-handed him in the mouth, knocking out a bunch of his teeth and sending him face down on the ice on top of a spreading pool of blood. He then calmly skated the puck out with a smile on his face. FUCKING LEGEND!

I wouldn't be a hockey fan... I started to like hockey when Ovechkin started playing. Growing up in the DC area at that time was awesome having a rookie sensation. Although I now understand that one person doesn't automatically make a team great, growing up without Ovechkin might not have sparked my love for hockey.

Watched this video earlier today and a few hours later the two went head to head again. Malkin got his 1000th point and Ovi got his 1200th in a 5-3 PIT win.

its allwayd been quite silly how the american media fails to realize the significance of malkin. all they do is talk about crosby and how incredible he is when in reality the reason for the penguins success is the fact that they have TWO all time greats as your n1 and n2 centers. sure crosby is a tad bit better but it should be similar to the situation in chicago a few years back when people were touting both toews and kane rather just one of em. this is coming from a penguins fan whos wached their game for a looooong time now. i think the problem is malkin isnt very media sexy and on top of that he isnt american. one thing ive seen as a european hockey fan is that the nhl media focuses allmost solely on american players
I'm not a Penguins fan, and I agree with you that Malkin should get more recognition, but two things:
1. Crosby is Canadian.
2. In America, American players are generally more recognized. In Canada, Canadian players are generally more recognized. In Russia, Russian players are way more recognized than any other kind of player. Same thing across Europe. In Norway, Zuccarello is a national legend. No other player nearly gets as much coverage. So yes, in America, foreign players should get more recognition, but they get much more praise in America than American players get in other countries.

Yup, they consider it to be one big continent. South America is just the southern part of America. Like most people from English speaking countries I find that difficult to understand. They are connected by only a thin strip of land and are on different major tectonic plates. If it's one America then it should not only be one Eurasia but Eurasiafrica. The English word American is equal to the Spanish word Estadounidense, not Americano. But since there is no continent of America in the English language, the word Americano does not directly translate. As a result it gets matched with American. That is not really correct and leads people from countries that use the single-America model to think that US residents are hijacking the word for themselves.

Ovi is one of the most exciting player to watch. And maybe the best goal scorer of all time. Malkin is a great player as well
If I could sum it up by comparing them to previous great players, Ovi is like Brett Hull and Malkin is like Lemieux.

You are missing a big piece. In the 2009 playoffs Ovechkin landed a blatant knee to knee on Malkin's mentor amd close friend in America, Sergei Gonchar. The hit tore Gonch's MCL. It was so blatant and ugly, that even Geno's parents, who were at the game, gave Ovi more than an earful.
Which it was unfortunate it happened, however ovi didnt aim for his knee. He was going in for his check and at the last second gonchar tried to maneuver around ovi and left his leg dangling out in the wind to take the brunt of the hit. It wasnt intentional.

Would take Geno any day over Ovi on my team. More complete, more skilled, and genuinely a better person. Ovi has strength, doesn't get injured since he's protected, and really a tank with a heavy shot. Goal scoring doesn't mean much when you can't win a cup (ok he got 1).
