It's like with Banjo Guy Olie, I type a title on a whim, scroll through the results, notice a vid and listen... and... subbed. Also, it's unfair to put Alys' death with FF7 Aerith. Aerith's death had the forewarning and dramatic meaning of a car accident; none. Compare that to Alys, when she's wounded, you're given a chance to make things right, there's hope. Find the relic and everything will be fine. You even find that guy along the way. Oh, that glimmer of hope I was talking about earlier, let me take that away and twist the knife in the wound with a gorgeous cutscene. The young surviving hero is now alone, hitting rock bottom. No more mentor and badass character for you. No way but up. That's monomyth, character death and character development done right.
I'm bigger Phantasy Star fan than a Final Fantasy fan. But for me Alys death is in no way painful as Aeriths. Aerith was like a ray of love in a hateful world. She was like a reincarnation of Hope itself. When she dies looks like the world Lost its colors. Alys death was pretty hard but not even closer to that feeling IMO.
@@MarkDucasble it depends on which story resonates most with you. Many would agree with you, I'm sure. I, however, agree with Pipo. Alys' death had such a profound impact on the story because of how it changed Chaz from a whiny, kid brother type into a man. He was forced to grow up. Her death changed Chaz from a brat into a man capable of becoming the Protector of Algo. The fact that you, as a player, were given hope also makes the death more profound. With Aerith, it just happened. With Alys, you literally fought tooth and nail to save her. Storywise, that is so much more impactful.
I love both Alys and Aerith dearly, both of their deaths have great impact on me for many different reasons. Aerith's death was shocking, unexpected, a sudden twist of someone immediately taken away from you. How she died was also the big impact because she was murdered and how she was killed hits hard. Also because of her character, for me at least she was the person I would least suspect to be killed. Having that empty space for the rest of the game in the party menu was really difficult, I'm biased in that she's my favourite character from FF7 but I digress. But you do 'feel it' more I would say in that Aerith was this one ray of hope in this awful world. Mainly because shortly after Aerith dies...everything goes to hell in FF7. All of the bad stuff happens, the world map theme shortly changes after her death to a dark and forboding tune and the character's have to deal with everything that happens. Also you have the rest of the game to build up to getting revenge for her to face the person that murdered her. Alys's death was also shocking to but in different ways. She was gravely injured and then slowly dying, watching her body essentially shut down to this horrid disease. Kind of like cancer in a way. But you're given a ray of hope, you might be able to save her! Rune would know the way! He can use magic! Of course he can save her! But then it's all for naught, Alys knew she wasn't long for the world, hence why she told Chaz to find Rune because she knew that Rune would be able to watch over him. It's striking in that when Rune is there, she doesn't need his kind words or protection and he knows that to. All she says is "Rune...please...help Chaz..." and he replies with "Leave it to me..." which really says a lot about their relationship even though we didn't know much about their history together. From what I said with Aerith early, you have that sense of avenging Alys more so than Aerith's death because you go to fight Zio after she dies so it's still very fresh on your mind. I experienced Alys's death before Aerith's as a kid and both were painful. Though I would say that even as a kid, I kinda accepted that Alys would die because I just saw her as being gravely ill from the Black Energy Wave. Even though it hurt, I knew that she wouldn't be here for long. Aerith on the other hand...I wasn't spoiled, I didn't see it coming, I didn't want to accept it happened and I didn't like it. I grieved her, the first proper experience with 'death' I ever had. Both of these characters are amazing and their deaths hit me in many different ways.
2024 anyone ? Still a great fan of Phantasy Star saga (not online) and Shining Force saga. Thanks for this piece cover, it’s really great and emotional.
2025. Recently saw a post on FB asking about character deaths you never got over. Posted her last breath. Since all the new kids talking about Joel from the last of us and his daughter. And you know I needed a good cry I guess.
I still remember the cold, seething rage I carried with me into the rematch with Zio after this whole devastating cutscene... And yeah, this music is a big part of why Alys's death hurt little me in a way that Aerith's never came anywhere close to. In any case, this is a truly touching rendition of the song.
yup young me tried REALLY hard to win that fight. I had a party of level 50s grossly overleveled because god dam it I am NOT losing more character to that bastard. They knew how to truly make you hate a npc.
Spoilers (of a nearly 30 years old game). I was not prepared for Alys death. I was sure all the shennanigans after she was struck with that black magic would heal her (or at least keep her alive, even if not playable anymore). It didn't go well. And this track is a masterpiece setting the emotions of that moment. It has more narrative strenght than just something to fuel up the player against the bad guys, it is a warning of what was going to happen to everyone if Chaz fails. And now he is on his own. It builds up his character and sends him straight into an ultimate heroic direction. This is a beautifully done tribute to it. Cheers.
Blame Sega for not keeping the fandom alive. Phantasy Star used to be a huge series back in the 90s & 2000s, but like Streets of Rage, Sega just ignores it. SOR4 sold about 4 million copies and Sega still ignores that Streets of Rage even exists. It's no wonder that Sega's networth is stuck in a 3 billion rut, which sounds like a lot until you see how much other game companies make.
Just shows you started at PS4 (lucky to start with the most polished and best version). PS has been killing beloved party members long before ff7 made it popular.
@@patrickmcathey7081 Close, 3 was my first PS game. I think that game had some deaths but only on certain generation choices? Been a while, but nothing in that game hit me all that hard other than the eventual reveal of 'wait we're on a space ship?!' Which was a pretty cool moment as a kid not having played the first two games and not realizing its sci fi roots at first. Also to be fair FF was also killing off party members before FF 7.
@@patrickmcathey7081 exactly. Phantasy Star franchise started the whole tragic party member separation in the rpg history. Square took a good load of inspiration from Sega.
It is a pure miracle to me that this game, this whole beautiful ost, this intricate and deep plot, this stellar colorful cast of characters - NEVER were touched on again since its release back in 1994. What is going on SEGA??? This has the potential to get to be the very best RPG to ever release as a well done Remake or next to the very best we got today.
