      Is the rest of his music good? I've been burned before by hearing one song I really liked from an artist and it turns out the rest of their music doesn't sound anything like it. Funny enough it was Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones (I did become a fan of the Stones, but I don't think any of their other songs I heard sound anything like Paint it Black).

    Small Brawl had the best levels, Black had the best stories and atmosphere, and Head On had the best gameplay/variety. 4 also gets an honorable mention from me as it fixed a lot of problems I had with 3 and a ton of character variety.

      Are you 16? Small brawl levels are trash all around. The kiddy levels are something you can probably relate to but it barely had any good destructibles. The levels are small and I hate the thought of an RC battle defeats the name of the game TWISTED METAL.

    My biggest problem with TM2 is its lack of replayability. Yeah, multiplayer and endings, I know, but no characters you would unlock by finding them in levels like Black and SB. But, the game has two unlockable characters, Sweet Tooth and Minion. But they are unlockable behind cheat codes.

    • @Fadiopeel
      @Fadiopeel  Рік тому +6

      Yes, I know, ST and Minion, and there are some unlockable stages but they are unlockable behind a code.
      I know a couple of TM games which show how unlockable characters should be done:
      Black and Small Brawl. Especially Black did the unlockables right, with the unlockable characters or levels can be found in story stages or getting a set number of kills in a specific Endurance level.

    • @gargervon8697
      @gargervon8697 Рік тому +1

      I think unlocks versus cheat codes is more of an era preference. I enjoyed the "codes" way of using secret characters in old arcade games like Street Fighter Alpha and Puzzle Fighter. It made you feel kinda special, because with your average kid not having access to the internet, you got to be that "cool" friend who could tell other friends about the codes, rather than just whipping out a phone and searching.
      But, nowadays, the code model is a bit archaic. Unlock systems do encourage the player to explore the game, which has its own fun factor.

    Even though I think TM3 is pure garbage, it has some neat things as well!
    The introduction of ENV weapons, without them we would not have Black's or SB's ENV weapons. I like the ENV weapons in TM3 too, especially the spaceship which is a little too OP but fun to use.
    Music is good, notable pieces of music (for me) being Microwaved and WYSIWYG by Pitchshifter and Superbeast and Meet the Creeper by Rob Zombie. Those are the most memorable ones.
    Levels, even though there are a couple of sucky ones (cough North Pole cough Washington D.C. cough) there are also some neat ones as well. My favourites being Hollywood and Calypso's Blimp.

    I agree with most of what you mentioned on the TM games I have played which TM1, 2, Black, Head On and 2012.
    I do disagree with Black's visuals because I like the gritty early 00s PS2 visuals and I also like the level gimmicks in TM 2012 since I like it when games throw in level gimmicks since platformers are one of my favorite genres and TM 2012 kind of did what those games do. Racing was admittedly out of place but the races can be cheesed.
    I did wish I was into TM back when 2012 came out so I got to play the MP mode, I was so sick of boring and shitty military shooters by the time 2012 came out that it killed any interest in the idea of MP games I had left for the longest time. I also played the series around 2014 which was 2 years after TM 2012 came out and that also didn't help.

    A couple of things I like to point out on Twisted Metal Black are the music and lack of ramming physics.
    First, the music in the game lacked. Don't know how else to put that. It just doesn't have Spirit like the soundtrack from TM2 does. It doesn't excite or help drive the gameplay. It's just weak and depressing. Not saying it's bad. It just doesn't work well for car combat imo.
    The other, and most important, thing is the games lack of ramming physics. This is huge. It's car combat. Ramming is the most obvious and basic attack available to a motor vehicle. How that gets overlooked, I'll never understand. It made the cars feel like toys.

    Worst: Difficult CPUs, hidden characters don’t have an ending, Trapper and Peacemeal are SO HARD to unlock, their playable versions are also toned down in size.

    You fall into the trap of gloating over 2 and it’s likely due to nostalgiac bias (it’s typically the first one people played as kids).
    TM1’s issues come with rushing it out to release. It’s got some control clunkiness, visibility, and a few other issues including ex’ing the video stories of characters. However, compared with TM2, it’s design is more consistent, characters are more balanced, and the maps support 1v1 much better than 2. The best additions of 2 come from more time under the hood before release: some clunkiness cleanup, addition of button commands, and co op mode. Design and aesthetics they almost jumped the shark in the campy department (TM3 completely summersaulted the shark)

    Really surprised you didn't tackle the actual story mode of Twisted Metal 2011.
    I do remember the gimmicks being really annoying past a certain point, but only getting stories for THREE of the main cast members absolutely blows. The live action element was certainly novel, but I don't think it made up for how downscaled the atmosphere was. A big part of Black's appeal was knowing EVERY character had something twisted going on in their story and the illness was on you to unlock them all. In Twisted Metal 2011 it's like... Okay, yeah, here ya go. One sweep through the campaign and you're finished.
    That missed the whole nature of the entire franchise, which was Arcade style gameplay.

    • @Fadiopeel
      @Fadiopeel  Рік тому +1

      I definitely agree. The gimmicks just annoyed me a bit more overall. • @Impalingthorn
      @Impalingthorn Рік тому

      I certainly wasn't opposed to the idea of 2012's story, I could see it working, just not if it costs everyone else a plot. That, and I think they needed to dial back on the edge.
      Thing is they basically tried to double down on what Black was doing, but Black was like a perfectly balanced dish that didn't need to be anything more or less than what it was (narratively speaking). Basically they tried harder than they needed to; ironically made Sweet Tooth feel more like a comic book villain rather than an unsettling murderer.

      I welcomed most of them to be honest, it just felt like a few really didn't fit Twisted Metal in my opinion. Still a really enjoyable experience though!

      @@Fadiopeel I think it was the fact TM kept the same gameplay loop for well over a decade, a lot of people initially didn't like it but now look back and enjoy it after doing a marathon of the series. The races were fun especially when Sweet Tooth goes mech mode and blow up half the people haha

    To this day, when I hear paint it black, I get fucking hyped. The story telling, the dark and grittiness of it, the huge leap in graphics, twisted metal black is still one of my favorite games. You're right about the skill ceiling too,I used to dominate that game, I played last night and couldn't drive straight, but after about half hour, I started to remember how to play, so satisfying

    As a kid I had gotten my hands on a demo disk, it had small brawl. "Playground Peril" was the only map, and Thumper and Slam were the only playables. I learned that you could shoot at the "merry go round" and it goes faster then eventually flings the kid off.

    Small brawl does have a weird tone for the series but I think it does the more lighthearted tone way better than 3 and 4 which were a lot goofier and light hearted but they just felt off while small brawl feels weird but charming.

    The worst part of TM Black is the censorship imo
    I remember seeing it on the playstation store on my ps4 and being so excited and when I went into the story... no cutscenes or text in the loading screens. Which is why after beating story mode with 1 character I ended up just using cheats to complete trophies much later.
    Yknow what game I didn't do that in? Head on. Having all the story stuff really did motivate me to finish everything properly, and when I got back to Black I enjoyed it way more since I was more familiar with how the game feels overall. I love it but it sucks being in EU means you don't get to experience the soul of Black. They went through the trouble of adding trophies but weren't able to remove censorship 15 years later

    • @Fadiopeel
      @Fadiopeel  Рік тому +2

      Yeah, it's crazy to me that it's so incredibly censored in Europe, and I really feel bad for any players over there who never got to experience the story of Black. At least now, all of the cutscenes and story bits are on the internet to watch!

    My uncle actually worked for SingleTrac for TM2(and I think one of the Jet Moto games), Incognito and Eat, Sleep, Play. He did the modeling for some cars in Black, Head-On and PS3(Kamikaze & Crimson Fury iirc). He even helped develop a rather obscure PS1 title called Roguetrip: Vacation 2012 under SingleTrac. He did the 3D modelling for Biohazard. I love that game, it's so goofy and the main menu music is so badass.
    When I talked to him about it he said he absolutely hated working on Twisted Metal. He mentioned that he loved designing cars but hated how the story of the games were often dark and grisly. I'm genuinely very proud of him, he's such a fuckin' remarkably talented and witty guy; I have a couple of pictures hung up in my room that he made, one of a hand sketched Blue Shelby Cobra with racing stripes and another of a graphically designed and _VERY_ detailed and X-ray'd Lamborghini. Nowadays he develops mobile games.
