Really hoping they put out a digital version of Frosthaven. I have over 150 hours in the digital of Gloomhaven and it makes it so much smoother to play and easier since it can be played online.
I hope not. At least not for a couple of years. I don’t think they will. My guess is 3-5 years. Bringing it out early would just hurt the sale of the actual board game.
Cool video man. Both of these are 10/10 for me. oddly enough I am the opposite. I find Oathsworn something that I enjoy more with others. I play it with my friends. The story is fun to hear and share as a group. While Frosthaven I like going solo two handed. Its like playing my own puzzle dungeon crawler. Ultimately both of them will stay in my collection. Glad I don't have to choose between the two of them.
That’s exactly how I feel. The story of Oathsworn is amazing to share with others. Playing any Haven game solo feels like a satisfying combat puzzle and you don’t have to worry about other players screwing up your strategy
Finished both Gloomhaven and Oathsworn campaign and for me it's Oathsworn. I love Gloomhaven (have not played Frosthaven yet), but Oathsworn was the best game experience ever. (for my taste in games obviously).
This one is easy. Skip Frosthaven physical, and get Frosthaven Digital instead. Buy Oathsworn miniature version, play it, and then sell it. Get ATO, and keep it forever.
Currently, I backed the standee version of Oathsworn, but I’m very tempted to upgrade to the core (miniature) version. Game storage is an issue - I can store the 3 miniature boxes of Oathsworn in my basement. How much of a pain will that be? Am I taking out a mini at a time, or will be I constantly be carrying boxes up and down the stairs? One other question - break down and setup: I don’t have a game table, so it will be hard to leave it out for a longer campaign. Thoughts on how that will impact the mini vs. standee question?
I sold my mini copy of Oathsworn and re-backed the new KS to receive a standee only version. Honestly, the size of it all was HUGE issue and after a few sessions I hardly looked at the minis. I even had the terrain box and won't buy that again. The appeal of Oathsworn is almost like it is IN the minis but it really isn't. I think Oathsworn generally has lower replay value so I won't be revisiting these minis (this is not KDM). I am 100% okay to downsize and still get what makes it great...that is the story, great characters and solid fights.
After hearing your opinions about both games, and playing a bit Gloomhaven on PC, I have to go with Oathsworn over Frosthaven. The both look great, but Oathsworn's story and mechanics are more to style of play.
This is my dilemma now. Our group of 4 is insanely excited for frosthaven (already purchased) and it will be a big hit. The question is do I back oathsworn? We have 2-4 years of campaign games to get through right now (ISS vanguard, Etherfields wave 2, and frosthaven) before this would ever be opened. And then there is imperial assault I just got for Xmas. Do I back oathsworn now at a lower price or just wait and see if I still want it in 2-4 years? Will I be able to find it or will it just be insanely pricey at that point?
One important consideration - are you already familiar with Gloomhaven or JOTL? In that case, Frosthaven would have a shorter learning curve, which means easier to table.
I played JotL solo 4-handed and loved it. But I was unable to finish gloomhaven because it was just too long and became an issue with our group from a time commitment perspective. Maybe I’d get through it solo, but it’s just too much for me. I suspect I would have similar thoughts with frosthaven. JotL is a perfect size campaign. So for this video I’m going with oathsworn, but if this video were gloom/frosthaven vs chronicles of Drunagor, I’d pick Drunagor all day.
It'd probably be a lot more playable solo if you did it 2-handed instead of 4-handed. Especially, since Gloomhaven and Frosthaven characters are more complicated than JotL.
I might get banned :P But I hated Kingdom death. The game is punishing. But the game just isnt difficult to me. Didnt really think there was much challenge fighting the different monsters. Of course KDM has great atmosphere and setting. Because of that I like Oathsworn much more because of the card element adds more depth to the fights. I agree that Haven games are best at 2 players and 3 is okay. and I agree that oathsworn I think you need to have both players control 2 full characters with full abilities. Controlling one character just feels too light and not fulfilling. Haven games are difficult and have much more depth compared to the boss battlers. But gloomhaven isn't punishing (havent played frost yet). I don't consider wasting one's time punishing at all. Needs to be in game punishments. I think oathsworn pushes the boss battler genre further with the card elements. But it still doesnt feel perfect just yet and feels lacking. I think if oathsworn had proper character progression (instead of just leveling up based on which monster your fighting) or atleast gave you a choice between two new cards each level like gloomhaven does instead of choosing a new card every 5 monsters (I forget the exact number) it would feel better.
Frosthaven is waaay too long and requires a lot of setup imo, just by playing JOTL we got exhausted, and its much shorter than the bigger brothers. I might start playing the digital one solo, but still thinking about it. I got Oathsworn from the KS, and cant wait for it :D
Did Jesse just say he chooses to do quick set up in oathsworn and not read all the flavor text?!? Shame
XD . . . we ran into some story elements that seemed to remove our agency as players. That was the only major letdown of the game.

@@Solcoyote lol no it wont. A 40-60 dollar game that is highly more accessible isn't stealing sales away from a $150-200+ plus niche board game.
@@justsumCrumbs why would people buy it if they have the digital version? The retail is 250.
Digital Frosthaven is must!
@@Solcoyote Having the option to actually afford the game vs not buying any version at all.
Up next. ATO vs both of these!!
We are playing this month :)

I hope a third 'Haven' game might allow you to bring together retired characters for a massive battle campaign.
Haven't started Frosthaven. But comparing Gloomhaven vs Oathsworn. I'd say Gloomhaven has better game play. Oathsworn 100 times better story though !

I love the minis - but I can understand a standee only argument for it!

In 2-4 years, will it even still be something you're interested in. Or will the inevitable sequel to Oathsworn be the better option?

That could be the case for sure!
