- Folkestone is one of the best places in the South East to shoot very colorful street photography. The most colorful street photography I've ever shot. I spent an afternoon walking with my camera - Nikon Z9 - and came back with more good photos than I expected to.
I did a quick scouting trip the week prior with my Nikon Z50, and images from cameras are featured in the gallery at the end of the video.

The amount of colour in Folkestone is crazy, what a great backdrop for street photography! IMAGE GALLERY AT 06:49 - Favourite image? Do leave a comment!
Great project idea Simon leading to some awesome shots.
Thanks Alex! I must admit I was rather pleased to have captured so many interesting images in such a short mount of time. 😊
Oh my, that blue / red shot was fab! 😊👍
Thanks Dave 😊 I'm unable to travel much at the mo, but a bit of "street" is proving to be fun, especially in a place so colourful. Hope you're well mate.
Great shots, fantastic colour dynamics. The last time I ran around Folkestone taking pictures of the ladies I ended up in a rather drab institution with grey walls and very small windows.
It must have been the dirty mac you were wearing. They couldn't see me, wearing bring colours and standing against the bright walls. Thanks for watching old chap! 😀
Heading to folkstone in a couple of months for work. I'll be there for 5 days and didn't know where to go and do some photography until I stumbled across your channel.
Very helpful, thank you.
Thanks Sean, enjoy your time there. Check out the Harbour Arm too, if you have the time. 🙂
Fantastic imagery, Simon! Favorite images are the first one and then the girl in the orange coat. Love the contrast of that one, her coat matching the building next door and her pants the building she's in front of, and the other person with an orange hat!
Thanks Catherine! Yes, how lucky was that! 😊
That was fun. Really liked the colored text in the title before the photo sequence. The photo of the shopkeeper with the strawberries was great.
Thanks Chris, it was fun the make. I spotted the shopkeeper just after i packed my camera away to walk home, and just had to stop and ask to shoot him.
I really enjoyed that Simon, as I knew all along an excellent eye and great thoughts. Now I need to work out my own project when I'm next out and about.
Hi Justyn, thanks! I look forward to watching your next project!
I am missing that walk! and you too - beautiful work, well done!
Know you know where it is and what it's like there! Got to get you in that coffee shop next time! 😍
Some cool colours mate.. i need to do a bit of street not done for ages
Cheers Paul, I'm really enjoying street these days, you should give it a go! Hope you're keeping while, it's been a while.
I've been to Folkestone many times and will be back later this week. The first time was before the harbour arm had not been renovated. Thanks for sharing Simon.
A lot has changed since the Harbour Arm was renovated Martin, you'll have a great time!
Wow, have never been to Folkestone (its a bit out of my radar journey wise) but boy ddi you do a great job selling it. Not sure what I expected of the place but it certainly has a certain charm, well captured images from yourself with some good background knowledge thrown in. Loved the red & blue matching combination image, no wonder you was pleased, greaty spotting & well captured. The colourful shops had a Tenby / Port Meirion / Tobermory vibe for sure. Great project, great results. atb Al
Thanks Al. It's certainly come a long way in 15 years. Funny you should mention Tenby, I've been watching a lot of UA-cam videos about that town, it's now on my top 5 places to visit list. Looks really interesting. I plan to to the Pembrokeshire coast walk, that's how I found it. Will check out the other two now you've mentioned them. Hope all is well.
@@SimonBurnCreative Oh the PCP, I was going to do that about 6 years ago with my mate who passed away. I have the Jim Manthorpe book and map for it - you are welcome to have it for reference and guide if you need it. Love Pembs, the wife loves Tenby. Have you got a date when you will be doing it?
@@thevalleywalker That's a pity you didn't do it Al, thanks for the offer of the guide. Maybe there's still time!? It's not going to happen for a while for me, probably not this year anyway, there's so much going on.
enjoyed that Simon, top shelf 👌👌👌
Cheers mate! See you in a few months!
Wow what an interesting town to photograph, I have a Z50 and agree it is so light & small though I need to practice with it to get best shots with it. Thanks for the video
Thanks Laurel! Yes, the Z50 is very under-rated, a wonderful little camera.
Very good Simon. I've never been to Folkstone. Looks like an interesting place though. Even if it is full of hippies! 😄
Hippies, arty types, and everything else. 😁
Hi Simon, nice to see Folkestone being shown in the best light, some lovely images of the area. I think the whole South East seems to be more and more influenced by those that have more creativity in the arts , not a bad thing ! Not really ever done any street style of photography and the vast majority i have seen is all mono images so this was nice to see the polar opposite . Enjoyed that mate, take care !
Hi Lee, you're right, the south east have become very creative in recent years. With all the colour, I'm not sure black and white would have worked half as well. Cheers!
Really good Simon. Great use of complimentary colours in what is an ideal place to be. Not sure about you but I’ve found the streets much more rewarding in a shorter span of time . That was some bulk you were carrying
Thanks James, yes, it's good to have a short amount of time and a specific goal you want to achieve, I find. Bulk, well I do eat my porridge every morning, so don't notice it. 😁
another great video, Ill be in Sandgate in a few weeks on previous trips always involved a walk to the creative corner and a cheeky vino (or 2)
Ah yes, plenty of cheeky vino opportunities. May I suggest Kipps Alehouse for a cheeky micro brewery ale or cider too. Enjoy your trip!
You had a great day! Some lovely contrasts and bursts of colour. Superb Simon. Oh plan? Don’t need a plan. Come out with us this saturday hehe
It was a really fun time playing with all the colour on offer. Saturday? I just flew back to Canada yesterday! 🥺
@@SimonBurnCreative ok we shall come to you 😆 I wish!!
@UC%F0%9F%99%82BSSoAPPZrlH8qzdIq_dcmQ You're always welcome, come on over. Seriously, there's a spare room here with your name on it 🙂
@@SimonBurnCreative OH my! Im 50 this year! I'm looking for flights :) hehe very kind Simon but I could impose on you.
Great shots from a great urban location, Simon! I've been saying the Z9 is a good street camera, despite size and weight. My contention is that even a view camera can be used on the street as long as one learns to be "invisible." 😀 In my experience, the cameras that attract the greatest attention are the "retro" styled ones. Everyone wants to know if you're shooting film. Just had that experience with the Zfc.
Hi Raymond, thanks! The Z9 worked fine, but my little Z50 gets zero attention. Although, if you carry the Z9 by your side and don't wave it about, it wasn't too bad. I have been using it for the past month while travelling, and have now started to use it for photography as well as video. Who knew!
Simon hi really enjoyed the video I know Folkestone very well as my dad was from there and we used to spend a lot of time there did the high street used to be called Tontine street at the top of the street there used to be a rock making shop where you could watch them making rock. Some great photos to. Take care Trev
I was raised in Folkestone Trev, and remember that rock shop. The town has changed a lot over the past 10 years, and the street photography really is wonderful these days. Cheers!
Folkestone is a great place to shoot I am spending the next few years on Kent and covering as much as I can samphire hoe is beautiful to shoot too and not to far away
Yes, the entire south-east coast is great! I have a video that includes Samphire Hoe I posted a few weeks back, I need to return there again. Cheers!
@@SimonBurnCreative thanks Simon I check it out subbed I look forward to seeing more of your adventures 👍🏻
