I get the joke about Kayako's "cricket" noise, but I'd be remissed if I didn't point out that she was killed through violent strangulation so that noise is her death croak through destroyed vocal chords. Toshio's meowing is a bit more steeped in the culture where it implies he merged with the family's dead cat, but also ties into the thought that souls of lost children in Japan become stray cats.

Honestly, the idea of making the two fight is a good idea, but the psychic should've just warded the house when Sadako entered. The best way to solve it would honestly have been to just play the video on a phone and show it to The Grudge. She'd be the target and the two would be locked in a fight forever. Then just ward the house and lock it and call it a day.

    • @branospevak4098

That solution would work only under the implication that the spirits can manifest at one place at a time. I was under the impression, that once the spirit latches onto you, you basically get a "copy" of them following you everywhere until they decide that your time is up. That's how I felt at least when watching the grudge movies, because Kayako would manifest herself at the same time to different victims on different locations. This would mean that they could do infinite battle at the house while also killing all their cursed victims around the globe at the same time, well Sayako at least since the video went viral online.

The perfect conclusion to this story would've been for The Priest to construct the well DIRECTLY outside Kayako's house as a final middle finger to the two onryos. Make Kayako watch the tape which would also lure Sadako into the house. They each would be a target to each other. Creating an Ouroboros loop of them killing one another till eternity. The moment Sadako enters the house to chase a target, Sadako herself becomes a target. It's like an ouroboros. They will be locked in combat eternally.
But why on EARTH would you spoil that beautiful, magical solution trying to seal them? The problem solved itself! Just leave the house! You have created a perfect, self-contained kaiju battle with onryo! Don't mess with it! Neither one of them is going to come out of that the victor!
Like, on the one hand the fused Lovecraftian superghost actually managed to look unsettling and that's super impressive to me. But on the other hand, I'm so upset because by just making them a single ghost the beauty of the loophole was ruined.
All I wanted was shameless, unapologetic loophole abuse to go rampant forever. Proper loophole abuse is so rare in storytelling. They had it. They HAD it.
The fused ghost just isn't as powerful by comparison. Disappointed.
Exorcist performance went from a solid 10/10 for coming up with the idea to 4/10 because he botched the job himself. Coulda had it all, man. God damn it. Will not be recommending services to any of my haunted friends. Best he can do is a consultant position at this point.

@@ivanlugo8474 Depends on whether Sadako can herself be cursed by the house. Because if she can, the moment she entered she got a permanent target put on herself. No matter where else she goes, even if she tries to take out targets who never entered the house--Kayako is coming for her. You're not safe from Grudge ghosts if you step in the house then leave. House just defines where you can catch the curse, not where the curse can kill you.
The only real complication I think would be if Kayako got other living targets who weren't also cursed by Sadako, she might be able to put Sadako duty on pause to kill them. Sort of like if you're getting homework assignments where one's an essay from hell but the others are quick and easy. All need to get done but maybe you can knock out small stuff before the worst bit. Antidote to the Grudge curse is literally to watch Sadako's movie and vice versa, but you only have so much time if you go into the house first.

That is a very sweet and non-asian way of perceiving it!
Fun fact: In general Asian folklore around spirits (particularly of vengeance), they become consumed by their obsession and a mere shadow of the live version of themselves. It's more likely that the mother who died and is obviously the source of the "grudge" unintentionally (or intentionally) pulled her son into the curse with her due to the proximity of their deaths. Powerful emotions/energy are like whirlpools/black holes that suck in nearby spirits. Something as powerful as a grudge curse would likely enslave anything nearby to it as a victim to forever perpetuate the curse just as the spirits of those who die to the grudge continue to serve it in some way.

Find the tape, contain it somewhere, let Sadako finish off the last few people who watched it before the Foundation locked it up, and just make sure no copies made it online. If any did, dispatch a few MTFs, administer amnestics, delete the files and all copies from whatever systems they're on, then move on. She'd be effectively harmless at that point, except maybe to some poor D-class who might be forced to watch the tape.
Kayako? That might be a little bit more difficult, but as long as nobody goes inside the house, they would be fine, so just put a bunch of guards, fences, and fortifications around it.
The combination of the two? Dunno. Maybe a combination of both methods would work? The issue is that she's more like 096 than anything, so she'd be nearly impossible to completely contain, but as long as nobody views the tape, or enters the house, they would probably be okay, so maybe combining both methods would work. Then again, she might behave entirely differently, so who knows. They'd just throw more D-class at the problem until they figured something out.

I've heard a lot about Sadako before, but never Kayako before (at least not by name). Being introduced to Kayako through this video, holy shit Kayako is scary! The way she moves combined with the clicking of her bones and the horrific vocal noises she makes of someone constantly on the verge of death as they desperately try to shout out for help/breathe... From how you described Kayako and how Kayako's son acted as a ghost, I thought I knew what to expect; boy was I wrong!
Also, in the context of the review, because Kayako didn't show up that much, she was so much more terrifying than Sadako. With Sadako, after a while you sort of get used to her paranormal activities. The way she appears, the hair she leaves behind, etc. (being familiar with Sadako myself likely played a factor too). With Kayako, she's properly introduced so late into the film, it's hard to get used to how she acts.
I need to watch/read the Ju-on films at some point. I'll make sure to go in expecting less aggression from Kayako and her son. Overall, this was an awesome video. 👍

Honestly can't recommend the grudge enough. Both ghosts are expertly crafted both as monsters and characters.
Kayako was beaten into a pulp. Her legs broken and finally her neck snapped. Hence why she's covered in blood, crawls instead of walks and she makes that constant gurgling sound.
Her son on the other hand was drowned along side the family cat so his skin is a sick blue and he meows to announce his presence. He's also not a vengeful spirit (atleast not compared to kayako) and in the first movie its a twist reveal kinda that he's dead because unlike his mother he can return to his human form and talk/act mostly normal.

Holy shit. O_O It goes without saying, but damn, that's beyond brutal. The context makes her even more terrifying, it's horrifying to think about; especially when you wonder about what she's trying to say, only to end up as gurgling. Is it a cry for help? Is it cries of pain? Is it anger-fueled curses? Goddamn, poor Kayako...
Oh damn, I never would've guessed the son was drowned. Although, I admit, I didn't realize his skin was a sick blue, I thought it was grayish (given its sick blue, makes sense why I mistook it for gray). To think Kayako's son and the family cat died from such means... And ooooohhhhhhhh, I see, that's really interesting. The crossover movie gave me the impression he was a vengeful spirit on the same/similar level to Kayako given he took part in the killing.

Fair warning this could be seen as a spoilor but in the first movie the set up is a new family move into kayako's house and once they're settled they fined a strange boy. The boy doesn't talk much but does introduce himself as toshio. The majority of the movie toshio is just kinda this weird kid who doesn't talk much and just appears around the house randomly. It isn't until kayako starts actively hunting the couple that toshio reveals his true form as a ghost as again a kind of mini twist in the movie. I think the reason why they changed it from 7 days to 2 days was due to Kayako herself being unbound by a time limit. When someone is cursed by Kayako, she can kill anyone at anytime anywhere, while Sadako usually has to wait for a week before she can take any lives. Because Kayako doesn’t have this limitation, she can take more souls at a faster pace and get stronger from this process than Sadako. Not only does Kayako have no time limit, her curse is also inescapable while Sadako’s is escapable, so Sadako’s only advantage against Kayako would be her telekinesis while Kayako has more advantages than her weaker opponent (Sadako could be empowered by the internet, but she didn’t enough time to claim any souls before facing Kayako in the film). Because in the movies, when you get cursed by Kayako and die, the place where you die becomes a new curse from where she can get you. So she killed so many people that the entire town is a giant curse.
There's also one where an actress goes into the house for a film or whatever, and she gets cursed. But oh no, she's pregnant! And Kayako has possessed her unborn child. In the end, the woman gives birth and Kayako is reborn as a human child. The movie ends with child Kayako pushing her mother from some stairs killing her. They even dress and makeup the child to look like a young Kayako, it's pretty creepy for how dumb it is

Only a horror movie sequel could come up with something that insane and ridiculous.
Gotta admit though, that's an interesting concept for horror.
I have to wonder how that would end up working. Like, did she exchange her ghostly powers for a second chance at life, or does she still have them? What happened to *her* kid? Is he stuck as a ghost while his mom runs off, alive again? And does she even use that opportunity to have another chance at life?
So many questions. Again, only a horror movie sequel could come up with something like that.

The way they ran and slammed into each other was goofy, but having them merge, or rather one subsume the other, is kind of a cool concept because it's reminiscent of the ancient curse ritual of kodoku (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodoku) whereby power is concentrated into a single being.

Always thought the scene where keizo gets cut in half when sadako and kayako merge was stupid, it's a blink and you'll miss it scene, at night and no one acknowledges it. Just felt unceremonious and unfair that he got that end during that integral moment. Would've liked to see him live a bit longer? Atlest long enough to see the two onryo's merge.

It's also terrible how the woman claims keizo is the only one to stop the curse BUT HE JUST ENDS UP MAKING IT WORSE. literally no different to the professor, atlest keizo knows some Dr strange esc hand gestures to buy the victim some extra time but that's all he can do. Buy extra time. Still a cool movie but ugh. Keizo just feels like a wasted character.
The nerve of the girl trash talking the professor when keizo also cannot stop the curse, just *huh???*

Well there is something connecting them that's unique to most big names in the J-horror subgenre: the fear of change.
In Ringu (both the novel and the film) the tape represents the fear of technology and modernism (represented by the tape) destroying the traditions and lifestyle of Japan (represented by the father's death at the end).
In the Ju-On franchise it's a tad bit diffrent. In the first film (Katasumi and 4444444444 or simply Ten fours) the telephone is used in a similar fashion (an idea which Chakushin Ari or One missed call will use again). In the following films that aspect is gone, however (and this is my personal theory, don't quote me on that) the modernism of a large industrial city is what's shown as the enemy as the Seyouki household is portrayed quite small in contrast to the apartment complexes in most other scenes. Not to mention that at the end of the second film we see everyone in the world get wiped out by the curse showing us that most large communities are indeed vapid and soulless. Not to mention that by killing his family Kayako's husband effectivley breaks his family, one of the most important values in the traditional Japanese lifestyle.

I watched this movie in the year it came out and whilst I was a bit let down at first by it not being that much of a typical J-horror - or well, at least it wasn't what I was expecting, I came to really like it due to the over-the-top, comedic factor it went for.
They also did a surprisingly good job of keeping the curses' identities consistent.

Given that this movie came out 13 years after its release, I'd accuse the filmmakers of watching "Freddy vs Jason" and saying "We can do something just as ridiculous!"...I would accuse them of that, but then I remember the Japanese have a long history of staging absurd monster battles, and realize this was an inevitability (80's slasher villains or not). 😅
28:17 I think I literally saw this scene parodied in "Chainsaw Man"! 🤣
29:15 I guess Sadako and Kayako said, "F**k it! Let's be friends!" 😄

Hi. I also experienced Sadako trauma. Way back when i was 7 to 9, my step sis and i watched The Ring one day. It was evening, so it was getting dark and the atmospere creeped in. Everything for me in that movie was so fucking stressed up - by the time i watched it untill the end, i couldnt have get a decent sleep for a long time. At first, it was dreams about her - CONSTANTLY: like i would find her in some building and try to crawl away from her using tiny vents, and she would be already waiting me there. When the dreams stoped - something else remained. It was that FUCKING CHAIR, where my clothing would be left. Bright colour top and darkend bottom jeans in the darkness sort of...create a vision on Sadako. I dont know how better to describe it (english is not my native, i'll use it as shield for now) but to understand...you can put white shirt on chair back and some jeans on top and just switch the lights off. Or better dont. I am 26 (or 27, i dont remember LUL) my dudes...I still sometimes look around my surrounding while im in bed. And looking at brighter stuff in the dark sometimes haunts me.
Oh my and my sister laughed it off back then. Like it was nothing.
    That cunt.
At this point, it almost comical how dumb i am to click on this video. But ill watch...its 2 pm, so hopefully i'll forget this video by the time i go to bed.

Ok so, after sadakaya is born and there's new version of the cursed tape to go with it, does the old version still take effect or is it obsolete now that there is a new version?
Since natsumi uploaded the old version and was watched/downloaded, therefore cursing thousand of people, would they still die now that there is a new version?
I demand a sequel to answer this burning question
