Annealing Steel in Vermiculite vs Wood Ash

  • Annealing is a step I always skipped... That is until I tried it.
    What an unbelievable difference. Some recommend you use wood ash from a fireplace, some recommend this vermiculite stuff. What is better? Lets take a look at annealing and see what it is and what works better. #SCIENCE sorta...
    I am just learning, if you see something i could have done better please let me know in the comments below so myself and other people learning can gain from your knowledge.
    Thanks for watching.

    Paused at 27 seconds past 5 minutes, why not use a can opener?

    By the sound alone they both sound darn near dead soft.
    Good experiment to share!

      If at first you don't succeed try try again. If that fails turn it into a liquid.

    cheers for that comparison, just bought myself a bag of vermiculite and shaped and dropped my first bit of steel in it yesterday, to cool overnight. Hopefully it will become a hot cut chisel if all works out well. - about to go and see how well it went! Feeling fairly confident after watching your video during breakfast!

    Great video comparison, something that occurred to me when watching is that you could use an automatic centre dot to mark the steel which should remove human error as much as possible. and also what about wrapping the cans in Kaowool or similar to insulate, it should give a slower cool and give a softer metal at the end as i understand the process.

    • @Friidom2
      @Friidom2  6 років тому

      I actually have an automatic center punch. Ill try that on version 2

      Friis Forge its just the size of your shop right? If you get one of those chest mics the sound quality will improve a thousand fold and subscriptions hehehehe have a good one bud im busy testing out a oregon harvester chainsaw bar for a bowie knife

    Hmm interesting, i like the cleaner scenario, but my shop budget says eff no.
    You should look into what im doing, pottery kiln, will get plenty hot for annealing, and at that point, it opens up foundry work, maybe up to brass or copper. There are kilns everywhere, and pretty cheap, one day ill find the right one.

    • @Friidom2
      @Friidom2  6 років тому

      Im going to make a foundry eventually. The vermiculite isnt that expensive. this bag was 12$

    Annealing intresting but, the larger one has more volume, thus more thermal energey, disapating in the same space soo it would cool slower.

    • @Friidom2
      @Friidom2  6 років тому +1

      Agreed. I need to redo this experiment with lime and just leaving it in the forge also.

    can opener???? I picked up two 1.5 gallon size of vermiculite....It was so wet it had to be dried before using. I used a thrifty store crock pot

    If you put argon in there, would it stay in the container? It's a better insulator and I think it would prevent oxidation.

    If you want to compare hardness of materials, use one against the other. As they are (still) files, try to use the one to file the other and vice versa (assuming the different parts are still of comparable sharpness).

    You should pit the vermiculite against agricultural lime. It's what was highly recommended to me for annealing.

    • @dysturbed1
      @dysturbed1 6 років тому +1

      Me, I'm lazy I leave the metal in the forge and let it cool slowly.

    • @Friidom2
      @Friidom2  6 років тому +1

      I might need to do a 4 way competition. vermiculite vs wood ash vs agricultural lime vs just leaving it in the forge.

    • @dysturbed1

      Friis Forge - I’d be interested in that. I just leave mine in the forge for now. But have a bunch of lime that my blacksmith buddy insist is the way to go.

      Friis Forge i basically put the steel in my weber kettle grill. Then set the fire and cook dinner. Once done cooking, i leave it in the coals with the lid on overnight. The next day, toolsteel is cool and annealed

      +TheBritishViking I tried to be nice and neat but it destroyed the little disc, so I figured tin snips would make short work of it. After those failed me I had enough. Cant cause me torouble if it's a liquid. Lol
