Carly Simon had so many great hits in the 70's such as "Haven't Got Time For The Pain", "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", "Attitude Dancing", "Coming Around Again", "You're So Vain", "Nobody Does It Better" (from the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me), "Jesse", "Legend In Your Own Time", "The Right Thing To Do", "(We Have) No Secrets" etc. She was married at one time to James Taylor & they did a few duets together "Mockingbird" & "Devoted To You".
Carly Simon wrote some wonderful songs! Carly, James Taylor, and Carole King all broke into the biz about the same time and would often show up on each others' recordings doing backup vocals and sometimes even at each others' concerts. Loved seeing the support they gave to each other. Thanks for sharing this one! 🙂
That's so funny, I was thinking about that commercial too! We still sometimes sing "anticipation is making me wait" trying to get the damn ketchup out of the bottle!!! 😜
I love this song! Thanks for your reaction, Shawn. The commercial made us laugh anticipation making us wait for the ketchup to come out of the damn bottle!!! You should check out the commercial, it's fun, and we still sing it in restaurants when we're shaking the hell out of the ketchup bottles!! My favorite by Carly is "That's the Way I always Heard It Should Be." It is hauntingly true for some, beautifully sung by this beautiful lady. Listen to it live, oh yeah
Her Greatest Hits album was one I wore out in the 70s. Her most significant song is That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be, and established her as a composer.
What separates Carly Simon from other songwriters for me is that she is so open in her feelings. There are so many songs which reflect a particular stage of life and experience she is having. You can go through her song catalog and almost follow her life through her various songs.
Exceptional songwriter and lyricist. One of the best to come along in the 70s. She managed in many songs to be simultaneously hopeful, optimistic, cynical, and pessimistic, but overall she captured the reality of whatever situation she was in with biting clarity. Some of the songs about her parents and their generation, and songs about what she saw in marriage and relationships were often touching and poignant while also cutting to the heart of why relationships often fail. Just brilliant.
This song was written about Cat Stevens while she was waiting for him to meet her for a date,Cat Stevens wrote the song Sweet Scarlet about Carly from the album Catch Bull At Four.
Anticipation was my first album purchase when I was 13yo. 8 months prior Carly had released her first (self titled) solo album, originally having spent years singing and recording with her sister Lucy as a folk duo, the Simon Sisters. Carly won the Best New Artist Grammy for having both her albums competing on the charts at the same time, which had never been done before. She has since won an Oscar/ Academy Award for (Let The River Run) the soundtrack to 80s movie romCom "Working Girl". Do check out her first single "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" and do the live performance at Jones Beach from 1970. And do watch "You Can Close Your Eyes" her duet w then hubby James Taylor, an acoustic set recorded in their home on Martha's Vineyard. Their harmonies together are unmatched. ❤
This is a great song, and Carly is a great artist. Like you said, this song was used in a Ketchup commercial. It became synonymous with the ketchup and the commercial, which showed an open, glass bottle of ketchup, hovering over a burger, with the thick, rich Heinz ketchup, making its way to the mouth of the bottle achingly slow, purposefully slow, until a dollop of ketchup finally drips onto the burger, with the chorus of Anticipation playing in the background. It was funny and a very successful commercial. ✌❤
“So Far Away” is another good one. It’s a cover of a Carole King song. My dad was in the Air Force so I identified with it, even though it wasn’t in the same way the song describes. Moving for your senior year is tough.
A fun fact, she wrote this about Cat Stevens who she was going on a date with. She also wrote “A Legend In Your Own Time” about him. In turn he wrote “Sweet Scarlet” about her.
Love the transition in this song from being fixated on the future and what may be to an appreciation for the moment and what is. Live today thoroughly because indeed, these are the good old days.
That’s the way I’ve always heard it should be,,Makes you really feel those moments in life, that make you emotional, regardless of what they were for your situation. Perfection! Please react to this one!
As a young teen rock 'n roller back in the day, I wasn't a Carly fan. But...I always anticipated (see what I did there?) when she released a new album cuz her album covers were always smokin' hot. Now mind you, this was waaaaay before the internet so besides my buddy's dad's Playboy collection, early SI swimsuit issues and National Geographic, Carly was very much appreciated.
Heinz Ketchup ruined this song for me forever when they used it in those ketchup commercials due to their product being thick and slow to flow out of the bottle. Just search youtube for "Heinz Ketchup "Anticipation " commercial 1978". Now whenever I hear it I think of ketchup. 😞 I forgot about the very funny "SWILL" sketch.
What an anthem! She knows what is up. She knows 'these are the good ol' days' and she wants to be a full partner. I love your input and perception cuz you are usually spot on. This was an anthem for women's liberation for which the previous generation was fighting tooth and nail.....appalled that women's rights were even a thing to consider. Women were coming into their own and owned it. Sadly we have only come so far. The fight for dignity and respect is still having to be waged. I loved the music back then but steadfastly ignored the lyrics! My bad.
Good Call -- this studio cut is the best. Too often Live performances fall short, as they don't replicate the perfection the sound engineers and producers got in the studio - and at a Live performance the audience usually knows all the words and every nuance by heart, so the artist often embellishes to give that 'personalized' touch. THAT'S THE WAY I ALWAYS HEARD IT SHOULD BE was her break-through hit. ANTICIPATION is probably my favorite, because 'these ARE the good old days', followed by HAVEN'T GOT TIME FOR THE PAIN. She also did the theme song for a 007 Bond film with NOBODY DOES IT BETTER (The Spy Who Loved Me).
Anybody else have a taste for some ketchup rn? 😏 The song became as popular for Heinz ketchup commercials throughout the 70s as it did for the song itself. ua-cam.com/video/7GBTIeR4Z_M/v-deo.htmlsi=S6wQAnMjeIo_tu5U
It's been said that she wrote the song [ He's so Vain ] about her relationship with Kris Kristofferson , thanks again Shawn for playing so much great old music.

Every time I hear this song, I think of the Heinz 57 ketchup commercials back in the day😂
And Matt LeBlanc, before he was on Friends. That was the best of those commercials.
Ha!! Just posted the same thing.
That's so funny, I was thinking about that commercial too! We still sometimes sing "anticipation is making me wait" trying to get the damn ketchup out of the bottle!!! 😜

I think of the SNL spoof for bottled mineral water that oozes slower then ketchup out of the carafe.
Her Greatest Hits album was one I wore out in the 70s. Her most significant song is That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be, and established her as a composer.
"You're So Vain" by Ms Simon stands among the great classic songs of the 70s.
"You're So Vain", is arguably her most famous song.
She has so many great songs. Try "The Way I Always Heard it Should Be" or "The Carter Family" .

Another great Carly Simon tune is "The Right Thing to Do." She's such a great song writer and singer.
This song was written about Cat Stevens while she was waiting for him to meet her for a date,Cat Stevens wrote the song Sweet Scarlet about Carly from the album Catch Bull At Four.
Would you do a reaction to Carly Simon and James Taylor singing Mockingbird (the live version)?
YES, Please!!
Please, more Carly Simon! She has tons of hits!
Carley Simon, James Taylor and Carol King are the early 1970s music wise for me. They sang on each other's records.
The ketchup song! 🙂

Carly Simon/The Right Thing To Do and also That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be😮😊
I love the drums in all her songs.
I remember the hook Anticipation being on a Catsup commercial. The Catsup was so thick and rich, slowly coming out of the bottle.
Carly's Greatest hits album is amazing.
The Way I Always Heard It Should Be live 1970 or 71.
DITTO: every time I hear this song, I think of the Heinz 57 KEYCHUP Commercials back in the day..!! me too

The song was used in a series of Heinz commercials, including one in 1987 with Matt LeBlanc, before “Friends”.
@@terri2494 I realize that.

Your next one should be the live version of “That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be”, in all her sexiness

She's known for You're So Vain but Anticipation is her anthem.
Carly is another one that is part of musicians from the 70’s, Taylor (ex husband), King, Stevens, Mitchell and Ronstadt
This was my favourite song by her back then ❤
React to Nobody Does it Better and also Mockingbird a live duet with James Taylor and Carly Simon
My hero Carly! ♥️🎶
This song was the theme song for my Senior Ball! Good times, but many many years ago ha ha.
Can't get the commercial out of my gray matter. 🙏🎶
Great song and great production.
❤❤❤
Can someone please pass the Heinz ketchup? 😂😂😂

😂😂 And now? You still not a fan?
I had a great big crush on her in the early seventies

AHHHH YES SHAWN, THE HEINZ 57 KETCHUP COMMERCIAL SONG! 😊
Carly was my first crush. I think I was 5 😍😍

Look up the one with Matt LeBlanc, from 1987, before “Friends”.

NOBODY DOES IT BETTER 😊
Aerosmith - "Seasons Of Wither"

I literally was just listening to that song!
What an anthem! She knows what is up. She knows 'these are the good ol' days' and she wants to be a full partner. I love your input and perception cuz you are usually spot on.

The ketchup commercial ruined this song for me. This a great song, isn’t it?
Thank you! Having a senior moment trying to remember the commercial 😂🎶
This turnt into a ketchup commercial.
Waiting, waiting...
Anybody else have a taste for some ketchup rn? 😏
The song became as popular for Heinz ketchup commercials throughout the 70s as it did for the song itself.
