Most of the pollution near the San Pedro harbor blows out off shore to Long Beach, not into Pedro. Anywhere west of ports of call, you will be in the clear.
This is the Barton Hill area - there's some pockets that are okay, however not the best area in Pedro. Please note pretty soon many of these neighborhoods will be sought after a bit more because of their proximity to the harbor. Feel free to reach out if I can help in any other way.

I lived in Pedro for 25 years, now in Phoenix metro. Choose north towards Western Ave, or go south towards point fermin, or go near Averill Park.
