You forgot to mention how everyone's desire to become a multi-millionaire stems from the desire to not want to worl while being able to live how you want. I don't even hate my job. It's a perfectly fine job, and everyone at the office is pretty nice. It's just that working at a computer for 8 hours every day leaves me so mentally exhausted that I'm barely able to do anything after work, and I hate that
I’m in this same situation! It’s easy for our therapists to say we should start meditating/working out/cultivate an hobby to better manage the fatigue of our jobs but once I end my shift and I’m so fucking exhausted I can’t even cook myself a meal what am I supposed to do!? Fuck society.
I can relate to that so much, it's so draining and sucks all the life out of me. That and just the fact that I *have* to work even though I really don't want to. It's the being bound to a contract that requires me to stand up at 6am on a monday which kinda kills all the fun for me in a job that I actually really love. That's why it's not great to make your hobby into a job, cuz after a while, you'll start to hate it.
honestly, if there is one thing that i dont feel bad about is lying in job interviews. in the same week i had two interviews and in one i said that i loved working in advertising agencies and in the other that i really wanted to work in a company because i was tired of agencies. neither was true, i just wanted a job so i would say whatever. and hey, it worked 🤷♀️

That's been the story of my work life. Lying that I even want to work for them and happy to do their work. I'm 58 and have had about 30 or more jobs in my lifetime.
The ''you have to have money in order not to worry about money'' struck a cord with me. My boyfriend often boasts about ''mental health over money'', which I feel is easy for him to say. He has a cushy life as his parents are well off; the guy has never had to worry about money. So I find it rich for him to tell others not to worry about making a lot of money, even though one of those people (me) has to worry about money every day.
It's a hellish cycle that your mental health hinges on you being able to support yourself but the thing you have to do to do that can actively make your mental health worse

My current boyfreind isn't well off but his family is, and he lives with them. So he has disposable income. He dropped out of uni so his funds are fully his. I remeber having a convo with him about how he has more financial freedom than me and he kept insisting that we were in the same boat because he makes minimum wage. It's so weird to try and explain that as a daughter of imigrants my parents are betting on me to be a financial sucess for everyone in the family. His money is his, his parents money is his. My money belongs to my family. Idk how to explain that to him.

Exactly. You shouldn't believe Hollywood writers and charismatic actors. They are just telling you what you want to hear. Ironically they are making tons of money with planting their various forms of propaganda into our heads. It can be "quit your jobs and follow your dreams" or it can be a simple Lorelai Gilmore Girls thing that life is super easy and fun or 6 Friends living in a humangous apartment. I'm not saying that these stories are not entertaining. They can be fun, inspiring, emotional moving. But many naive people will believe wrong things about life because of these illusions. In many movies, despite the odds of having success are super low, the protagonist often wins and obviously we as the audience root for the good guys to win or to reach their dreams. In Fight Club, Tyler Durden said this iconic monologue: "We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact." 20 years of internet later, most people are probably smart enough to realize that he is right. So the next step maybe is to tell us regular folks to stop being a cog and follow your dreams and passions. LOL. 😆Let's be honest: The "good" jobs are for the "good" people. Maybe you can get lucky and get such a job. But most people will always have to work these low paid shitty boring destructive jobs. I don't hate my job; I hate the pay and weird hours. I really don't want a high power complicated job to be able to survive. I want a livable wage. Food, shelter, transportation, free time to enjoy life outside of work.
Exactly! I wouldn’t have quit my retail job working at the craft store if I could have just been paid a livable wage and a regular schedule (not 9-5 but just consistent from week to week!). The company was clearly making enough to pay us more. It was only a matter of greed that kept their turnover high. Penny smart but pound foolish for the company since it costs so much to rehire and retrain employees instead of just retaining the ones you have!
High power complicated job only sounds that way because the people in these jobs create that narrative so that they can justify their power and their pay. Don't be fooled. The higher you go, the easier it gets for the most part. You have minions below you to do the work for you. There was a study on this called the whitehall study that showed the higher you were and the more autonomy and control you had the happier you were. The lower, less autonomy control the more miserable.

Who is more integral to the company? A chief financial officer who does budgeting, forecasting, risk mitigation, analysis of market trends, and who makes strategic decisions to optimize revenue or the cashier who scans a customer's items and places them into bags? The job of a cashier may be physically demanding, but that doesn't change its (relatively) low marginal productivity, scope or scarcity. Who is more entitled to profits? The entrepreneur who comes up with an idea, identifies something the market finds values, organizes the business, finances the necessary capital by taking a risk, arranges the management structure, and makes sure his business is up to code or the warehouse worker putting boxes onto trucks? The latter job may involve more elbow grease and longer hours, but how "hard" someone works doesn't matter in terms of how much they earn. A student can work half as hard and in half as little time but earn a higher grade.

💯💯💯 your spot on. It's ridiculous that you need to justify taking time for yourself. It comes back to that BS mentality that every moment of your day needs to be occupied with something that makes you money. Every moment you're not at your nine to five job you're expected to be advancing your education so you can get a better cubicle job, working some type of side hustle, etc. What If I just want to spend time with my family? What if I just want to spend time with myself?
It's a very American way of thinking. Being European, people would be more weirded out by someone able to cut down some hours and NOT doing it. I never understood why americans are mostly defined by their job. It's strange to me, but I guess it's just another cultural difference.

Haven't been applying lately because I don't agree with it. But if I did it would say I will dedicate 40years of solid hard work and loyalty too you, like a soldier does in the military and do anything the job requires. If I'm paid a liveable wage, which will afford me my own home paid off and a holiday once a year. Otherwise it's not for me thanks. I think that's a fair deal for 40 of my lifes best years and 80,000 hours especially after I already did 12 years and 21000 hours school that meant to help my future. I think that's a fair trade, as a matter of fact I think considering the amount of life and time that would cost me that your getting a bargain. Once on a job interview..when asked about multi tasking I told them " No, I do not multi task..but I do really well when I can focus on one thing at a time..but I suck at everything if I try to do several things at once..I am not a machine, I am a human and I do not think humans were designed to multi task...it is not natural". I did not get the job..but years later I got a letter frim their human resources departments telling me my answer really struck a chord in them..and after many years they realized that what I had said was utterly true!! That was satisfaction.... That letter.
I've always said that politicians should be paid the same as the average wage, adjusted to remove the top 1%. That would sure help them find ways to increase that wage.

Same. Whenever I dare to complain about my job pissing me off to my Boomer parents, I get some variation of "you should realize how lucky you are to have a job." And I get it. I am lucky. But I still sometimes just want to vent about grievances that I have about my job. It's cathartic.
I worked retail for years. I worked my way up from $8 an hour to $10. Then I had a nervous breakdown from being overworked and under paid so I quit. That same job I left is now paying $15 an hour STARTING. They always had the money to pay us that much. But the exodus of workers forced them to bump the pay to get people to come back. No thanks. I’m still not going back.
Good for you!!! In the town in Oregon where I currently live The Walmart starts at $18.00 to $20.00.. For pretty much all and any position..to START & yet They STILL can't get employees..because people finally realize working in retail sucks.. The useless consumer goods suck..all the cheap made in China crap they sell sucks..the customers stupid first world problems and entitled attitudes suck,.the questionable management and stupid policies and lack of other staff .too under staffed no one else in your department to support you on the job sucks..and I know I already said this...but it bears repeating... the entitled ass- hat customers SUCK..SUCK, SUCK!!! ..and the job itself is just NOT an important part of society. Honestly, my mental health improved so much with my remote job. I have time for me while working from home. It’s a better balance that in-person jobs I’ve had.

This is funny to me as someone who has only ever worked blue collar jobs and wants to get a desk job. Work is a means to an end in my opinion. I don't want fancy cars and clothes and a big house, I just want to have to enjoy my time on the planet as best as possible. Working til midnight almost every night is just getting way too tiring

The current average work hrs just don’t suit society’s needs anymore. Labour unions fought for working 6-7 days a week to 5, with 8 hrs on and 8 hrs off. However people lived very close to their work and was often labour intensive. These days it takes people including myself one hour to get to work and one hr back. I hope to see the 4 day work week in this lifetime, many things are automated and people deserve the time off

I use to be the one who was dedicated to my job and would even overwork myself just to be treated like garbage and watched everyone else get a raise for doing nothing. I learned my lesson after I ended up in the hospital from chest pains due to stress and was fired from old job. Now I don’t care about a job. I started a business and once I make it in my business I’m quitting my job.
Literally did the same thing. When covid hit, I was let go like I was nothing. Ever since then, company loyalty meant nothing to me. I took a took a low-end job in 2021 while building businesses on the side. Now, last month, I quit my job and running my own businesses. It's a lot of hardwork and there's no real day offs but at least I'm in control with my life now and I don't have to deal with office politics and empty promises.
The last job I had tried to make me feel guilty for going to the bathroom longer than my 10 minute break. My boss actually thought he was scary and intimidating when he brought this up to me. 😂

Yes, and terms such as side hustle developed about that time, but they are euphemisms for having to work 2-3 jobs to survive, something which before was understood to be extreme poverty. Same with onesies, they were popular because people couldn't afford to switch the heating on, but were dismissed as slovenly by boomers.
I'm a programmer and I can't imagine anyone hating a job like this. Most "bullshit" jobs really aren't, they're just bad fit jobs. People need to know what their strengths are.

It's about figuring things out, learning technologies, problem solving, optimizing, making decisions, and having a bit of creative freedom in your approach. All of that makes the job inherently fun and no two days are ever the same. The actual software you're making isn't always exciting or cool (in fact it rarely is), but just knowing you made it a little better is the real reward.
I live in a super poor, conservative area, and I’m starting to get really agitated by the people complaining about people choosing to not go back to work because they make more from unemployment. If you make more money from unemployment than busting your butt at a full time job, then maybe, just maybe we should start paying people a little more. We’re the richest country in the world. You would think they could figure out how to share the wealth with the working class

Working from home I think is a great thing to be pushing!! The worker doesn't have to pay for transport or lose time to it. They don't have to maintain a "professional" wardrobe and can instead just use and invest in their own clothing. They aren't forced to take part in soul-draining "office behavior" and can thrive better in a more relaxed, comforting environment with no one to micromanage their very state of being while they work. I was, and still technically am, an office worker. Unless things change drastically in my personal ambitions I probably will be for most of my life! So if I have to do this I'd rather have these advantages, and if I have my way I'll never work in a physical office again!
+ more time to spend with family if you live with them, taking a five minute break to play with your kid instead of seeing them for only a few hours each day !
To everyone complaining about this, you should know that minimum wage workers put themselves at risk during covid while getting paid MINIMUM WAGE. If you're an essential worker who is required to work during a pandemic you should be paid MORE. I work a truly bullshit job at a corporate company and while I don't earn massive amounts of money, I get much more than minimum wage for pretending to look busy. This system is broken.

He hasn't worked in almost 30 years and now the group he's part of has built a self-sufficient farm so they don't need to use money anymore, his dream is that someday everyone will be able to live free from money.

Best decision I recently made is cutting back from 38.5 to 24 hours a week. While I initially planned to do it only for a year (while going to evening school), I'll probably stick with it beyond that. It just feels good to get 8 hours of sleep, wake up when it's light outside even in winter, and then still have 2 hours to myself before going to work. My productivity has risen and I feel so much better.
Right. OK. But you still expect others to work in order to provide for you. You still want to go out to bars open until 2 a.m. and be served. You still want your trash picked up. You still want the electricity and Wi-Fi to keep running to your home 24-hours a day, even if that means a lineman has to be up a pole in subzero temperatures at 3 am. You still want to go shopping and have someone help you out and ring you up. People aren't really "anti-work." They are just anti-work for THEMSELVES. They're fine when others have to carry the burdens to keep our society running.

Well it you don't like what you do, any job is a soul sucking job. Let's not let the glamour of "jobs that can lead to significant societal changes" fool you. Am a social worker and the job that I do has significant effect on the individual and their families and therefore on many other systems that I don't get to directly observe but the amount of time I spend on administrative task is ridiculous. Those administrative task that tend to be small but add up to such a point that you feel overwhelmed and like you are never going to catch up. So just because the work is important doesn't mean it's not going to mimic the feelings that lead to burn out. Also, to those characters that worked in government and activity sabotaged their work, do realize that your work is actually affecting a whole lot of people. If the pandemic has shown us anything is that our government agencies need to work a lot better and harder.
Omg yes! I live in a care facility because I'm disabled. All I see around me is job qualifications going up and work-loads increasing. And it's mainly by administrative tasks that are often useless. Those things are decided by management who haven't set foot in this place since covid started. All the while, nurses had to work around the clock. And when a nurse comes to visit me, they have to write an essay on all the things they did here.

Speak to a provider. Note. Speak to a family member. Note. Attend an interdisciplinary meeting where you were discussed. Note. In social services, is a note or it didn't happen.

I live in the UK, where working is seen as a badge of honor and the unemployed are villains stealing from our country. A country where they're increasing tax for the working class, so it can "go back into health and social care." Despite that being one of the biggest selling points of the Brexit campaign. Lowering the amount you earn before you payback your student loan, whilst our prior pm avoids paying tax. I'm not gonna hussle, I'm gonna do the bare minimum.
Watching this vid after literally putting in my two weeks, I was going to try so hard to stick it out till the end of the year and the thought alone made me want to cry. The only thing I will miss will be the paycheck (the most money I ever made) but even now I'm learning I really don't need much to be happy.

I love this video. It really strikes home. After working crap teaching jobs for years I’ve realized that work does not make me happy. Well at least the work I’ve been doing. The places I have worked for don’t care about students or actually helping people learn. It’s al about the money. They run the schools like a business and could care less about their teachers. Luckily I’m in a place we’re I have the money to walk away while so many others don’t. When an old boss tried to pressure me into staying after they first tried to intimidate my by claiming they would fire me. I just walked away. They begged and begged before turning nasty. I don’t need that in my life. I guess she thought I was in desperate need for work. But actually I just wanted to get out of the house and work with some kids. I felt very guilty for leaving my old coworkers to suffer in this job but was never sure about what I could do to help.

That’s why you should definitely look for Worker Co-op jobs or starting one if you can, everyone gets a say, profit isn’t the main goal (giving costumers a good product and giving the workers equal fairness and cash is the main thing) and you vote for a company you technically partially own.
I miss living in Germany because whenever i went to the market, the workers didn't smile or make small talk, they just rang me up. I wish American workers could do that 😭 we have to pretend to be happy and overly friendly and it's way more exhausting than just Doing the Job.
I am actually THRILLED to have someone to talk to with my customers at my retail jobs. It is the only human contact I get as I live alone and have no friends or family in the new town I have just moved to. Therefore I am NOT pretending to be nice to MY NICE and appreciative customers. I genuinely look forward to the daily exchanges. I Myself got super stressed out by cashiers during the time I spent living abroad in England & Germany because of how cold shouldered, distant and aloof all the workers were there.. I only had my job there.. I had no family or friends there..long story short I was luckily only stuck there for a year.. During that time I reached out did attempt to get to know some of my coworkers..but in that short amount of time I was unfortunately unable to establish ANY connections or friendship.. Since I made no friends..the cold retail staff during my shopping trips and marketing days made my life almost unbearable!!! I have never felt more alone and isolated in my whole life. It was torture. I literally kissed the ground of American asphalt once I got back on Americam soil. I was so happy to be home. Where it least I know I couks count on a kind smile and human acknowledgment from a store clerk. Hey..it is better than nothing. As I said..I was Soooo happy and relieved to get back to America.. You might say American workers friendly banter is fake..But I find it quite pleasant and reassuring that I at least merit a smidgen of kindness and human interaction..evem if it is just ftom a rando sales staff. When they are outgoing and friendly..it is often the ONLY human dignity and interaction I am given in life. You're almost on the mark, The Take, but you missed the greatest point on how we can fight this. Asking people to not buy into a consumerist culture is simply lazy and irresponsible. People can't just live their lives like the Big Lebowski. People have mortgages and medical bills to cover. You should be advocating for union work to improve the work itself, the conditions of workers, and their pay.
I don't think they were saying not to pay your bills or to be unemployed by choice. They were saying don't buy into hyper-consumerist culture that makes you spend your paycheck on unnecessary trappings of wealth and material status symbols, like brand name clothing and fancy interior decor and high-end cars, etc.
So many times, I've heard politicians brag about how they increased employment more than anyone else in decades, and that always seemed like a non-accomplishment to me in ways I couldn't quite articulate.
Interesting historical parallel (and one that I think was addressed in a previous video): Following the Black Death in Europe, serfs and other "grunt" laborers were able to lobby for better rights/wages because such a huge population loss made their skills much more valuable. Yeah, it's a morbid comparison - and frankly it really shouldn't take such tragic circumstances to propel needed social change - but maybe they had a point in saying that better times could be around the corner.

Do we have to love what we do though? I mean, I don't think it should be as draining as it is. I don't think it should be soul destroying. But in my opinion, the idea that you need to LOVE work or live what you do is just more capitalist propaganda. I would like my work to have some meaning, to be helpful. But I don't need to love it.
In my opinion, again, there's a part of the world that more or less has the luxury to choose a job they more or less like or love. Many can't. I like my jobs. Even what I'm doing. But I wouldn't say I love it. I really like my collegues and my bosses are very nice. My working hours are absolutely fine. And it's mostly not really stressful. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it. I think about my work as my way of gaining the money to do what I want to do with my life. Outside of my appartment or for buying stuff for my appartment. And for spending time with my friends. I honestly don't know what job I could do because I'm not really able to handle much stress and what job I would love doing.
If everybody expects to have their dream job, who is going to do the essential work like sanitation, waste disposal etc? Nobody grew up dreaming about cleaning bathrooms yet somebody needs to do it

I think the best state of mind you should be at work is to not take it so seriously and just do what you have to do without pressuring yourself it’s just for money and not think to much about it and of course if it’s affecting your health mentally and physically quit!
Someone making sure you have less money than you would otherwise have only makes sense if it is the state that makes you pay taxes to pay for important stuff for society as a whole. "Let me tax you a little bit more, so that we can build a homeless shelter, and you can buy one less bar of chocolate each month." That is good. But if it's an employer paying you less and giving you something you have absolutely no use for instead, your employer pretty much steals money from you and buys you a gift with it.

I've noticed that there's this double standard, depending on which generation is against being in 9-5 jobs with low pay and mundane working conditions. When middle class baby boomers, gen xers (whether it's now or someone younger from the past), or even sometimes us zoomers say they don't want those kind of jobs, it's "revolutionary" and "smart", but when a millennial says the same thing, they're "entitled" or "lazy". This channel has literally criticized and made generalizations of millennials for the very same thing you're praising these characters of doing or preaching. I've noticed that although my generation is currently dealing with those same criticisms, and that baby boomers and gen xers had these same criticism when they were younger as well, the amount of criticism that millennials get for this, particularly from this channel (despite you guys consisting of mostly millennials, I assume), seems to be more obtuse. Millennials can't catch a break, and it almost makes me thankful to be in gen z, only because our generation seems to get a lot more sympathy than millennial do. Millennials seem to get the most criticism for, well, just wanted to be treated with a basic level of respect and earn a fair money for their hard work, while gen x gets the least criticism nowadays, probably because gen x has been controlling a lot of the media for a while. In general, I think it's tone deaf to label any group of people as "slackers", "lazy", etc. because they choose not to follow a specific career or don't want to be mistreated and overworked while also being underpaid (especially when many of them are still working anyway). It's also tone deaf of them to paint them as people who "want everything handed to them" all because they just want a living wage and to have a decent life. It just seems to be capitalistic propaganda. No wonder news outlets and celebrities try to make people from certain generations look stupid, lazy, selfish, or entitled, or when they try to speak for regular people by saying that we all have it easy or that the only reason many of us suffer financially is because we're all lazy, dumb, or entitled. It's all calculated.

This comment made me realize I may be spending too much time on Twitter. I find myself thinking in that truncated, snarky ‘gotcha’ tone of Twitter you’re describing. Also like to echo the SWM really enjoying the unique perspective of the channel.
The problem is there are some people that are that conscientious that they need to work 40+ hours or they'll go crazy. Just like there are people that don't find meaning in their jobs which makes them feel undervalue and unappreciated. Which is why you need to find an outlet for that which your missing while in a job you can at least tolerate. (easier said than done though I know).
I started working for the Fed Gov in Nov 2019 and quit in April 2020. ‘Twas Soul sucking - knew I wouldn’t do a good job because I wasn’t passionate and someone else would want my position. Happy ending: I have my dream job now.

I really enjoyed this. As someone who left the corporate world and all the abuses, I engaged in something I loved. We need people to work all sorts of jobs, but we weren't put on this earth to slave away, make barely anything, and die broke after working in miserable jobs.

The irony is that these are professional actors playing characters saying lines written by professional writers funded by big companies. I like anti-capitalist or similar messages or anti hamsterwheel thoughts. But those people creating our entertainment are defintely working hard for their living and many or even the majority are earning more than your average joe. And although pressure is high, being an actor seems to be a more fulfilling job than many jobs we have to do. One wonders if these messages are even honest or just calculated in to appeal to the regular folks who think they are cool or anti-establishment for liking anti-establishment movies (made by million dollar companies and that cost millions of dollars). The German rap legend Samy Deluxe just recently released a song where he is rapping about several political and systemic ideas and problems. So far so good. But: a) He's doing it to earn money. And b) he won't change anyhting. He is just making clever wordplays, he's again talking about what is going wrong and he is again not offering any solutions. And in the interviews he will tell you whatever he wants you to hear. Like those playing their roles like Brad Pitt/Edward Norton in Fight Club. Wow, anti capitalism messages in a mainstream movie. Wow, so awesome. In the end, those involved make a lot of cash and the viewers think something has changed. But it didn't. Only the fact that already rich people got a little more money for themselves, sponsored by us regular folks watching their stuff. Not sure if my thoughts are leading anyhwere here. It's just weird when you think about it.
Great point. Brad Pitt really put a lot of effort into his character, but the thing is it’s just a character. The ideas established in that movie sound good but in reality I don’t think anybody would go to those extremes. Like Tyler Darden said, it’s masterbation.
This is basically like the whole "how can you be anticapitalist if you own an iPhone" argument. You have to work with the tools of a corrupt system because oftentimes they're the only tools you can use. Anti-work entertainment, while part of a capitalist system, has the possibility of spreading anticap messages to a wider audience then could ever be done in a political text or a manifesto. But at the end of the day it is still entertainment made for the specific purpose of entertaining so it's still limited in that regard. I hope that helps.

Fight Clubs might be a good one at least several aspects but movies often give simple solution to complex problems or romanticise difficult life themes with easy success or happy endings against the odds. It's probably the viewer's responsibility to think for himself and to think critically about both critical concepts like Fight Club and positiv fantasies like many RomComs or in your standard drama or fantasy movie.
I think sort of ironically, you’re reducing these individuals to their jobs. If you’re a writer who has somehow managed to make it big enough to create a mainstream box office film, you’ve almost certainly had to work a number of odd jobs to get to that position. There isn’t exactly an abundance of jobs for young budding writers. Eventually, if you’re lucky, you get to that point but you have still nonetheless been shaped by what brought you to that point. Soul crushing labour often in accompaniment with unliveable wages and unlikable coworkers is not something you will forget quickly. I searched up Samy Deluxe and I noticed that he is 1) a person of colour in a white country 2) middle class 3) the child of a broken home. People of colour are typically much more conscious of financial instability and uncertainty and will place an almost relentless amount of pressure on their younger generations to establish wealth for themselves. He also doesn’t come from money so he would at the very least be exposed to what it’s like to be stuck in a job you don’t like to make ends meet. His father also left his family when he was quite young; it’s not unlikely that some of the earliest memories that Samy has are of financial instability and the resultant stress on his family unit. My point is that just because an individual is now making money doesn’t necessarily mean these messages are coming from an inauthentic place. Just because someone is trying to make money doesn’t necessarily mean they have an inaccurate or flawed perception of the situation. It is true that companies will fund this kind of thing but not because there’s some sinister pro-capitalism message being snuck in (or at least some apathetic or passive ideas along the lines of “we live, we work, we die”). Capitalism as a system isn’t self aware; it simply highly incentives those on the upper echelons to continue making money at the cost of all else. I truly believe they don’t really care, primarily because their wealth and status has given them, even in their own eyes, a sort of invincibility.

People are "stuck" because they drown themselves in debt with materialistic crap that doesn't matter because it gives them the temporary pleasure long enough to endure their "soul-crushing" job. Its a vicious cycle. Ask yourself, why am i working so hard? To buy this couch? These clothes? You're trading your life source for these possessions. If you want to break out of it, start budgeting and learn minimalism. Once you free your mind; you can free your body.
I think in the 1980s, the slacker became the hero of movies and pop culture. Hustle culture helped to create a certain rebellion against hustle culture and the culture of the Reaganomics and "Work you to death."
My old co-worker and I used to joke that it's corporate welfare. We would work in a factory and get paid a third of what the people who sat on their butts and did nothing all day upstairs did. Not only that but they got treated to massage days and special treats that we were excluded from. We were short-staffed and they continue to hire people for no reason
I’m in retail management and my cashier (I work at a small store, we only have one closing cashier, she only works three nights a week, and I cashier when she’s not there) doesn’t do anything other than cashier - she won’t do go backs, she won’t clean, she won’t straighten the sales floor up - she just reads when she has no customers, and as a comrade to antiwork, I don’t encourage her to do anything! I’m in retail middle management at a place that regularly makes me close the store by myself - why on earth other managers in my position bother hassling their minimum wage employees to do more is beyond me. Fuck it. She doesn’t lift a finger and I love that for her. If you’re in management: relax. It’s likely that your company does not care about you. Stop fretting. Don’t harsh the vibes of your staff if they’d prefer not to work. Leave them be. Stop trying to convert everyone to your neuroses about satisfying unreasonable expectations from your employers. You’re fighting a losing battle. Give up. Get a hobby and do it on the clock.
I lived in Germany for 3 years. I don't often praise the country because personally i've had bad experiences there. That being said, the work culture and work-life balance is probably a lot healthier than in the USA. Even if you work a low skill job on minimum wage, you can afford all the basic necessities of life: you can pay rent, have a car, pay utilities, buy food and even go on (not too extravagant) vacations. When the work day is over you go home, it doesn't matter if you couldn't finish all your work, your extra hours are either payed or given to you as extra days off. If it's lunch break, you go have lunch. If you're sick you stay home and you *have* to take your days off, it's compulsory. If you don't take your vacation days the company might get in trouble.
MISCONCEPTION ABOUT PROTESTANTS: Yes, they worked hard and believed their work was a reflection of their relationship with Christ. They still found time for their families, friends, and had a social life. They would be absolutely infuriated on what America has become.

Part time jobs should pay the same as full time jobs if I could make the same amount working 30hrs as I do working 40hrs life would be so much better. Something that is interesting that I didn't see brought up, is how the current scaffolding of society, technology, and culture disconnects us from the Earth which already provided everything we need to live. Many of us are raised to get food from a grocery store as opposed to growing and/or hunting it ourselves. we are raised that anything we can't do for ourselves, instead of trying to learn it, we should be able to pay someone to do it for us. we are raised to believe we need money to survive because we "have to" depend on these entities that obstruct our connection to nature and that reconnecting to nature would be too hard or lack meaningful or sufficient "luxuries". i'm not saying we all should or have to live in the woods or must learn to do "everything" for ourselves, but this idea that somehow we can't live without money feels like a relatively modern construct to trap us into society for the benefit of a select few as opposed to all of us. we all know money won't make us happy but we've been told to sacrifice happiness to make enough money to survive or buy other luxuries. there has to be a good balance between connecting back more to nature, gaining back more of our independence from societal infrastructure, and enjoying the luxuries of modern life. maybe I'm asking too much :/ also what's interesting is that a minimum wage used to be a living wage in the US several decades ago. A family could have one person work full time at a "low skill job" and still enjoy a good work-life balance with modern luxuries. It feels like too much of the decision making power has fallen into the hands of the corporations and the governments care more about what companies want than the people. Curious as to others thoughts
At the end of the day, no one wants to work but no one wants to not have a TV and an iPhone. They work backwards from the assumption that they have to have the material things, and they're dissatisfied with the system that doesn't give them those material things for free. People could have a 15-hour work week right now if they wanted to live the lifestyle of someone a hundred years ago, in a small domicile with no consumer goods and most of their time spent outside.

That's been the story of my work life. Lying that I even want to work for them and happy to do their work. I'm 58 and have had about 30 or more jobs in my lifetime.
The ''you have to have money in order not to worry about money'' struck a cord with me. My boyfriend often boasts about ''mental health over money'', which I feel is easy for him to say. He has a cushy life as his parents are well off; the guy has never had to worry about money. So I find it rich for him to tell others not to worry about making a lot of money, even though one of those people (me) has to worry about money every day.
It's a hellish cycle that your mental health hinges on you being able to support yourself but the thing you have to do to do that can actively make your mental health worse

My current boyfreind isn't well off but his family is, and he lives with them. So he has disposable income. He dropped out of uni so his funds are fully his. I remeber having a convo with him about how he has more financial freedom than me and he kept insisting that we were in the same boat because he makes minimum wage. It's so weird to try and explain that as a daughter of imigrants my parents are betting on me to be a financial sucess for everyone in the family. His money is his, his parents money is his. My money belongs to my family. Idk how to explain that to him.

Exactly. You shouldn't believe Hollywood writers and charismatic actors. They are just telling you what you want to hear. Ironically they are making tons of money with planting their various forms of propaganda into our heads. It can be "quit your jobs and follow your dreams" or it can be a simple Lorelai Gilmore Girls thing that life is super easy and fun or 6 Friends living in a humangous apartment. I'm not saying that these stories are not entertaining. They can be fun, inspiring, emotional moving. But many naive people will believe wrong things about life because of these illusions. In many movies, despite the odds of having success are super low, the protagonist often wins and obviously we as the audience root for the good guys to win or to reach their dreams.
In Fight Club, Tyler Durden said this iconic monologue: "We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact."
20 years of internet later, most people are probably smart enough to realize that he is right. So the next step maybe is to tell us regular folks to stop being a cog and follow your dreams and passions. LOL. 😆Let's be honest: The "good" jobs are for the "good" people. Maybe you can get lucky and get such a job. But most people will always have to work these low paid shitty boring destructive jobs. I don't hate my job; I hate the pay and weird hours. I really don't want a high power complicated job to be able to survive. I want a livable wage. Food, shelter, transportation, free time to enjoy life outside of work.

Exactly! I wouldn’t have quit my retail job working at the craft store if I could have just been paid a livable wage and a regular schedule (not 9-5 but just consistent from week to week!). The company was clearly making enough to pay us more. It was only a matter of greed that kept their turnover high. Penny smart but pound foolish for the company since it costs so much to rehire and retrain employees instead of just retaining the ones you have!
High power complicated job only sounds that way because the people in these jobs create that narrative so that they can justify their power and their pay. Don't be fooled. The higher you go, the easier it gets for the most part. You have minions below you to do the work for you. There was a study on this called the whitehall study that showed the higher you were and the more autonomy and control you had the happier you were. The lower, less autonomy control the more miserable.

Who is more entitled to profits? The entrepreneur who comes up with an idea, identifies something the market finds values, organizes the business, finances the necessary capital by taking a risk, arranges the management structure, and makes sure his business is up to code or the warehouse worker putting boxes onto trucks? The latter job may involve more elbow grease and longer hours, but how "hard" someone works doesn't matter in terms of how much they earn.
For instance, am I entitled to a high grade just because I studied for 10 hours with no breaks? Obviously not. My output matters. A student can work half as hard and in half as little time but earn a higher grade.

Haven't been applying lately because I don't agree with it. But if I did it would say I will dedicate 40years of solid hard work and loyalty too you, like a soldier does in the military and do anything the job requires. If I'm paid a liveable wage, which will afford me my own home paid off and a holiday once a year. Otherwise it's not for me thanks. I think that's a fair deal for 40 of my lifes best years and 80,000 hours especially after I already did 12 years and 21000 hours school that meant to help my future. Once on a job interview..when asked about multi tasking I told them " No, I do not multi task..but I do really well when I can focus on one thing at a time..but I suck at everything if I try to do several things at once..I am not a machine, I am a human and I do not think humans were designed to multi task...it is not natural".
I did not get the job..but years later I got a letter frim their human resources departments telling me my answer really struck a chord in them..and after many years they realized that what I had said was utterly true!! That was satisfaction.... That letter.

What I hate is the mental torture of "you should be thankful you have a job." I'm thankful I have the opportunity to earn a good salary so I have food and shelter, but somehow I'm still miserable and hate my job.
Same. Whenever I dare to complain about my job pissing me off to my Boomer parents, I get some variation of "you should realize how lucky you are to have a job." And I get it. I am lucky. But I still sometimes just want to vent about grievances that I have about my job. It's cathartic.
I worked retail for years. I worked my way up from $8 an hour to $10. Then I had a nervous breakdown from being overworked and under paid so I quit. That same job I left is now paying $15 an hour STARTING. They always had the money to pay us that much. But the exodus of workers forced them to bump the pay to get people to come back. No thanks. I’m still not going back.

For pretty much all and any position..to START & yet They STILL can't get employees..because people finally realize working in retail sucks.. This is funny to me as someone who has only ever worked blue collar jobs and wants to get a desk job. Work is a means to an end in my opinion. I don't want fancy cars and clothes and a big house, I just want to have to enjoy my time on the planet as best as possible. Working til midnight almost every night is just getting way too tiring

The current average work hrs just don’t suit society’s needs anymore. Labour unions fought for working 6-7 days a week to 5, with 8 hrs on and 8 hrs off. However people lived very close to their work and was often labour intensive. These days it takes people including myself one hour to get to work and one hr back. I hope to see the 4 day work week in this lifetime, many things are automated and people deserve the time off

I just quit my job yesterday, I feel my soul is so empty, I’ve been working in a job that doesn’t bring me much joy, that doesn’t pay well and that I have to achieve a level of productivity that doesn’t allow me to enjoy anything in my free time. I’ve been depressed for a while but afraid of leaving because I need the money. But the decision is taken, I need my soul and my joy back 🥺💖

I use to be the one who was dedicated to my job and would even overwork myself just to be treated like garbage and watched everyone else get a raise for doing nothing. I learned my lesson after I ended up in the hospital from chest pains due to stress and was fired from old job. Now I don’t care about a job. I started a business and once I make it in my business I’m quitting my job.
Literally did the same thing.
When covid hit, I was let go like I was nothing. Ever since then, company loyalty meant nothing to me.
I took a took a low-end job in 2021 while building businesses on the side.
Now, last month, I quit my job and running my own businesses.
It's a lot of hardwork and there's no real day offs but at least I'm in control with my life now and I don't have to deal with office politics and empty promises.
The last job I had tried to make me feel guilty for going to the bathroom longer than my 10 minute break. My boss actually thought he was scary and intimidating when he brought this up to me. 😂

Yes, and terms such as side hustle developed about that time, but they are euphemisms for having to work 2-3 jobs to survive, something which before was understood to be extreme poverty. Same with onesies, they were popular because people couldn't afford to switch the heating on, but were dismissed as slovenly by boomers.

It's about figuring things out, learning technologies, problem solving, optimizing, making decisions, and having a bit of creative freedom in your approach. All of that makes the job inherently fun and no two days are ever the same. The actual software you're making isn't always exciting or cool (in fact it rarely is), but just knowing you made it a little better is the real reward.
I live in a super poor, conservative area, and I’m starting to get really agitated by the people complaining about people choosing to not go back to work because they make more from unemployment. If you make more money from unemployment than busting your butt at a full time job, then maybe, just maybe we should start paying people a little more. We’re the richest country in the world. You would think they could figure out how to share the wealth with the working class

Working from home I think is a great thing to be pushing!! The worker doesn't have to pay for transport or lose time to it. They don't have to maintain a "professional" wardrobe and can instead just use and invest in their own clothing. They aren't forced to take part in soul-draining "office behavior" and can thrive better in a more relaxed, comforting environment with no one to micromanage their very state of being while they work.
I was, and still technically am, an office worker. Unless things change drastically in my personal ambitions I probably will be for most of my life! So if I have to do this I'd rather have these advantages, and if I have my way I'll never work in a physical office again!
+ more time to spend with family if you live with them, taking a five minute break to play with your kid instead of seeing them for only a few hours each day !
It can be tough though to lose the home as a place of refuge away from work, because you're never really "away."
But they should pay you more if you work from home since they'll pay less on electricity and rent if you're not there.

He hasn't worked in almost 30 years and now the group he's part of has built a self-sufficient farm so they don't need to use money anymore, his dream is that someday everyone will be able to live free from money.

Best decision I recently made is cutting back from 38.5 to 24 hours a week. While I initially planned to do it only for a year (while going to evening school), I'll probably stick with it beyond that. It just feels good to get 8 hours of sleep, wake up when it's light outside even in winter, and then still have 2 hours to myself before going to work. My productivity has risen and I feel so much better.

Right. OK. But you still expect others to work in order to provide for you. You still want to go out to bars open until 2 a.m. and be served. You still want your trash picked up. You still want the electricity and Wi-Fi to keep running to your home 24-hours a day, even if that means a lineman has to be up a pole in subzero temperatures at 3 am. You still want to go shopping and have someone help you out and ring you up. People aren't really "anti-work." They are just anti-work for THEMSELVES. They're fine when others have to carry the burdens to keep our society running.

Well it you don't like what you do, any job is a soul sucking job. Let's not let the glamour of "jobs that can lead to significant societal changes" fool you. Am a social worker and the job that I do has significant effect on the individual and their families and therefore on many other systems that I don't get to directly observe but the amount of time I spend on administrative task is ridiculous. Those administrative task that tend to be small but add up to such a point that you feel overwhelmed and like you are never going to catch up. So just because the work is important doesn't mean it's not going to mimic the feelings that lead to burn out.
Also, to those characters that worked in government and activity sabotaged their work, do realize that your work is actually affecting a whole lot of people. If the pandemic has shown us anything is that our government agencies need to work a lot better and harder.

Omg yes! I live in a care facility because I'm disabled. All I see around me is job qualifications going up and work-loads increasing. And it's mainly by administrative tasks that are often useless. Those things are decided by management who haven't set foot in this place since covid started. All the while, nurses had to work around the clock. And when a nurse comes to visit me, they have to write an essay on all the things they did here.

Watching this vid after literally putting in my two weeks, I was going to try so hard to stick it out till the end of the year and the thought alone made me want to cry. The only thing I will miss will be the paycheck (the most money I ever made) but even now I'm learning I really don't need much to be happy.
I joined the work council to make a change in my company, just to learn that it is just another part of the machine. Now my main focus is to work, to be my own boss.

I love this video. It really strikes home. After working crap teaching jobs for years I’ve realized that work does not make me happy. Well at least the work I’ve been doing. The places I have worked for don’t care about students or actually helping people learn. It’s al about the money. They run the schools like a business and could care less about their teachers. When an old boss tried to pressure me into staying after they first tried to intimidate my by claiming they would fire me. I just walked away. They begged and begged before turning nasty. I don’t need that in my life. I guess she thought I was in desperate need for work. But actually I just wanted to get out of the house and work with some kids. I felt very guilty for leaving my old coworkers to suffer in this job but was never sure about what I could do to help.

I miss living in Germany because whenever i went to the market, the workers didn't smile or make small talk, they just rang me up. I wish American workers could do that 😭 we have to pretend to be happy and overly friendly and it's way more exhausting than just Doing the Job.
I am actually THRILLED to have someone to talk to with my customers at my retail jobs.
It is the only human contact I get as I live alone and have no friends or family in the new town I have just moved to.

I am NOT pretending to be nice to MY NICE and appreciative customers.

I Myself got super stressed out by cashiers during the time I spent living abroad in England & Germany because of how cold shouldered, distant and aloof all the workers were there..
I only had my job there.. I had no family or friends there..long story short I was luckily only stuck there for a year.. During that time I reached out did attempt to get to know some of my coworkers..but in that short amount of time I was unfortunately unable to establish ANY connections or friendship..
Since I made no friends..the cold retail staff during my shopping trips and marketing days made my life almost unbearable!!!
I have never felt more alone and isolated in my whole life. It was torture.
I literally kissed the ground of American asphalt once I got back on Americam soil. I was so happy to be home.
Where it least I know I couks count on a kind smile and human acknowledgment from a store clerk. Hey..it is better than nothing.

People can't just live their lives like the Big Lebowski. People have mortgages and medical bills to cover. They were saying don't buy into hyper-consumerist culture that makes you spend your paycheck on unnecessary trappings of wealth and material status symbols, like brand name clothing and fancy interior decor and high-end cars, etc.
So many times, I've heard politicians brag about how they increased employment more than anyone else in decades, and that always seemed like a non-accomplishment to me in ways I couldn't quite articulate.
Interesting historical parallel (and one that I think was addressed in a previous video): Following the Black Death in Europe, serfs and other "grunt" laborers were able to lobby for better rights/wages because such a huge population loss made their skills much more valuable. Yeah, it's a morbid comparison - and frankly it really shouldn't take such tragic circumstances to propel needed social change - but maybe they had a point in saying that better times could be around the corner.
Interesting. But wasn't that always the case? When industrialization came along, workers were suffering under horrible horrible working and living conditions. Often things only can start to change when life gets really bad for a big number of people.

Do we have to love what we do though? I mean, I don't think it should be as draining as it is. I don't think it should be soul destroying.
But in my opinion, the idea that you need to LOVE work or live what you do is just more capitalist propaganda. I would like my work to have some meaning, to be helpful. But I don't need to love it.
In my opinion, again, there's a part of the world that more or less has the luxury to choose a job they more or less like or love. Many can't. I like my jobs. Even what I'm doing. But I wouldn't say I love it. I really like my collegues and my bosses are very nice. My working hours are absolutely fine. And it's mostly not really stressful. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it.
I think about my work as my way of gaining the money to do what I want to do with my life. Outside of my appartment or for buying stuff for my appartment. And for spending time with my friends. I honestly don't know what job I could do because I'm not really able to handle much stress and what job I would love doing.
Speak for yourself then. I see myself as worthy of work that enriches my soul and not just a means to survive.

Someone making sure you have less money than you would otherwise have only makes sense if it is the state that makes you pay taxes to pay for important stuff for society as a whole. "Let me tax you a little bit more, so that we can build a homeless shelter, and you can buy one less bar of chocolate each month." That is good. But if it's an employer paying you less and giving you something you have absolutely no use for instead, your employer pretty much steals money from you and buys you a gift with it.

I've noticed that there's this double standard, depending on which generation is against being in 9-5 jobs with low pay and mundane working conditions. When middle class baby boomers, gen xers (whether it's now or someone younger from the past), or even sometimes us zoomers say they don't want those kind of jobs, it's "revolutionary" and "smart", but when a millennial says the same thing, they're "entitled" or "lazy". This channel has literally criticized and made generalizations of millennials for the very same thing you're praising these characters of doing or preaching. I've noticed that although my generation is currently dealing with those same criticisms, and that baby boomers and gen xers had these same criticism when they were younger as well, the amount of criticism that millennials get for this, particularly from this channel (despite you guys consisting of mostly millennials, I assume), seems to be more obtuse.
Millennials can't catch a break, and it almost makes me thankful to be in gen z, only because our generation seems to get a lot more sympathy than millennial do. Millennials seem to get the most criticism for, well, just wanted to be treated with a basic level of respect and earn a fair money for their hard work, while gen x gets the least criticism nowadays, probably because gen x has been controlling a lot of the media for a while.
In general, I think it's tone deaf to label any group of people as "slackers", "lazy", etc. because they choose not to follow a specific career or don't want to be mistreated and overworked while also being underpaid (especially when many of them are still working anyway). It's also tone deaf of them to paint them as people who "want everything handed to them" all because they just want a living wage and to have a decent life. It just seems to be capitalistic propaganda. No wonder news outlets and celebrities try to make people from certain generations look stupid, lazy, selfish, or entitled, or when they try to speak for regular people by saying that we all have it easy or that the only reason many of us suffer financially is because we're all lazy, dumb, or entitled. It's all calculated.

The problem is there are some people that are that conscientious that they need to work 40+ hours or they'll go crazy. Just like there are people that don't find meaning in their jobs which makes them feel undervalue and unappreciated. Which is why you need to find an outlet for that which your missing while in a job you can at least tolerate. (easier said than done though I know).

I really enjoyed this. As someone who left the corporate world and all the abuses, I engaged in something I loved. We need people to work all sorts of jobs, but we weren't put on this earth to slave away, make barely anything, and die broke after working in miserable jobs.

Seems like the paradigm of getting paid more to do soulless work is a newer dimension of "hazard pay."
The irony is that these are professional actors playing characters saying lines written by professional writers funded by big companies. I like anti-capitalist or similar messages or anti hamsterwheel thoughts. But those people creating our entertainment are defintely working hard for their living and many or even the majority are earning more than your average joe. And although pressure is high, being an actor seems to be a more fulfilling job than many jobs we have to do.
One wonders if these messages are even honest or just calculated in to appeal to the regular folks who think they are cool or anti-establishment for liking anti-establishment movies (made by million dollar companies and that cost millions of dollars).
The German rap legend Samy Deluxe just recently released a song where he is rapping about several political and systemic ideas and problems. So far so good. But: a) He's doing it to earn money. And b) he won't change anyhting. He is just making clever wordplays, he's again talking about what is going wrong and he is again not offering any solutions. And in the interviews he will tell you whatever he wants you to hear.
Like those playing their roles like Brad Pitt/Edward Norton in Fight Club. Wow, anti capitalism messages in a mainstream movie. Wow, so awesome. In the end, those involved make a lot of cash and the viewers think something has changed. But it didn't. Only the fact that already rich people got a little more money for themselves, sponsored by us regular folks watching their stuff.

Great point. Brad Pitt really put a lot of effort into his character, but the thing is it’s just a character. The ideas established in that movie sound good but in reality I don’t think anybody would go to those extremes. Like Tyler Darden said, it’s masterbation.
This is basically like the whole "how can you be anticapitalist if you own an iPhone" argument. You have to work with the tools of a corrupt system because oftentimes they're the only tools you can use. Anti-work entertainment, while part of a capitalist system, has the possibility of spreading anticap messages to a wider audience then could ever be done in a political text or a manifesto. But at the end of the day it is still entertainment made for the specific purpose of entertaining so it's still limited in that regard. I hope that helps.

Fight Clubs might be a good one at least several aspects but movies often give simple solution to complex problems or romanticise difficult life themes with easy success or happy endings against the odds. It's probably the viewer's responsibility to think for himself and to think critically about both critical concepts like Fight Club and positiv fantasies like many RomComs or in your standard drama or fantasy movie.
I think sort of ironically, you’re reducing these individuals to their jobs. If you’re a writer who has somehow managed to make it big enough to create a mainstream box office film, you’ve almost certainly had to work a number of odd jobs to get to that position. There isn’t exactly an abundance of jobs for young budding writers. Eventually, if you’re lucky, you get to that point but you have still nonetheless been shaped by what brought you to that point. Soul crushing labour often in accompaniment with unliveable wages and unlikable coworkers is not something you will forget quickly.
I searched up Samy Deluxe and I noticed that he is 1) a person of colour in a white country 2) middle class 3) the child of a broken home.
People of colour are typically much more conscious of financial instability and uncertainty and will place an almost relentless amount of pressure on their younger generations to establish wealth for themselves.
He also doesn’t come from money so he would at the very least be exposed to what it’s like to be stuck in a job you don’t like to make ends meet.
His father also left his family when he was quite young; it’s not unlikely that some of the earliest memories that Samy has are of financial instability and the resultant stress on his family unit.
My point is that just because an individual is now making money doesn’t necessarily mean these messages are coming from an inauthentic place. Just because someone is trying to make money doesn’t necessarily mean they have an inaccurate or flawed perception of the situation.
It is true that companies will fund this kind of thing but not because there’s some sinister pro-capitalism message being snuck in (or at least some apathetic or passive ideas along the lines of “we live, we work, we die”). Capitalism as a system isn’t self aware; it simply highly incentives those on the upper echelons to continue making money at the cost of all else. I truly believe they don’t really care, primarily because their wealth and status has given them, even in their own eyes, a sort of invincibility.

Also, many people have plenty of money without even working hard because they were born in a wealthy family (for example). Then you also have people working multiple jobs and barely being able to pay rent. We are all humans and need to help each other out. That’s my opinion at least.

People are "stuck" because they drown themselves in debt with materialistic crap that doesn't matter because it gives them the temporary pleasure long enough to endure their "soul-crushing" job. Its a vicious cycle. Ask yourself, why am i working so hard? To buy this couch? These clothes? You're trading your life source for these possessions. If you want to break out of it, start budgeting and learn minimalism. Once you free your mind; you can free your body.

I think in the 1980s, the slacker became the hero of movies and pop culture. Hustle culture helped to create a certain rebellion against hustle culture and the culture of the Reaganomics and "Work you to death."
My old co-worker and I used to joke that it's corporate welfare. We would work in a factory and get paid a third of what the people who sat on their butts and did nothing all day upstairs did. Not only that but they got treated to massage days and special treats that we were excluded from. We were short-staffed and they continue to hire people for no reason

I’m in retail management and my cashier (I work at a small store, we only have one closing cashier, she only works three nights a week, and I cashier when she’s not there) doesn’t do anything other than cashier - she won’t do go backs, she won’t clean, she won’t straighten the sales floor up - she just reads when she has no customers, and as a comrade to antiwork, I don’t encourage her to do anything! I’m in retail middle management at a place that regularly makes me close the store by myself - why on earth other managers in my position bother hassling their minimum wage employees to do more is beyond me. Fuck it. She doesn’t lift a finger and I love that for her. If you’re in management: relax. It’s likely that your company does not care about you. Stop fretting. Don’t harsh the vibes of your staff if they’d prefer not to work. Leave them be. Stop trying to convert everyone to your neuroses about satisfying unreasonable expectations from your employers. You’re fighting a losing battle. Give up. Get a hobby and do it on the clock.

I lived in Germany for 3 years. I don't often praise the country because personally i've had bad experiences there. That being said, the work culture and work-life balance is probably a lot healthier than in the USA. Even if you work a low skill job on minimum wage, you can afford all the basic necessities of life: you can pay rent, have a car, pay utilities, buy food and even go on (not too extravagant) vacations. When the work day is over you go home, it doesn't matter if you couldn't finish all your work, your extra hours are either payed or given to you as extra days off. If it's lunch break, you go have lunch. If you're sick you stay home and you *have* to take your days off, it's compulsory. If you don't take your vacation days the company might get in trouble.
MISCONCEPTION ABOUT PROTESTANTS: Yes, they worked hard and believed their work was a reflection of their relationship with Christ. They still found time for their families, friends, and had a social life. They would be absolutely infuriated on what America has become.

Part time jobs should pay the same as full time jobs if I could make the same amount working 30hrs as I do working 40hrs life would be so much better. Something that is interesting that I didn't see brought up, is how the current scaffolding of society, technology, and culture disconnects us from the Earth which already provided everything we need to live. Many of us are raised to get food from a grocery store as opposed to growing and/or hunting it ourselves. we are raised that anything we can't do for ourselves, instead of trying to learn it, we should be able to pay someone to do it for us. we are raised to believe we need money to survive because we "have to" depend on these entities that obstruct our connection to nature and that reconnecting to nature would be too hard or lack meaningful or sufficient "luxuries".
i'm not saying we all should or have to live in the woods or must learn to do "everything" for ourselves, but this idea that somehow we can't live without money feels like a relatively modern construct to trap us into society for the benefit of a select few as opposed to all of us. we all know money won't make us happy but we've been told to sacrifice happiness to make enough money to survive or buy other luxuries. there has to be a good balance between connecting back more to nature, gaining back more of our independence from societal infrastructure, and enjoying the luxuries of modern life. maybe I'm asking too much :/
also what's interesting is that a minimum wage used to be a living wage in the US several decades ago. A family could have one person work full time at a "low skill job" and still enjoy a good work-life balance with modern luxuries. It feels like too much of the decision making power has fallen into the hands of the corporations and the governments care more about what companies want than the people.
Curious as to others thoughts
At the end of the day, no one wants to work but no one wants to not have a TV and an iPhone. They work backwards from the assumption that they have to have the material things, and they're dissatisfied with the system that doesn't give them those material things for free. People could have a 15-hour work week right now if they wanted to live the lifestyle of someone a hundred years ago, in a small domicile with no consumer goods and most of their time spent outside.
