What's especially rough about Valve's Deadlock and Firewalk's Concord is that not are both studios based in Bellevue, they're only like 5 miles apart. I'd imagine it's kind of rough being that close to one of the studios that's absolutely kicking your ass.
Deadlock has that invite fomo going on right now with people and their friends, also the "cool kid" club of playing a private game on their profile. How the game will do after public release, will see, the character design look bland and ugly.

I think you can take it a step further. Games like Concord and Saints Row 2023 flop cuz nobody listens to anybody else. Especially if they have a negative word to say. It's literally that thing the boomers warned everybody about.
I can just imagine the studio on launch day: Servers go live. A person yells, "The first player is in!" They all cheer.....The number climbs, 10-20, 50-75. The same person yells, "Our first hundred!" They all cheer. It goes up, and up, but slower. Slower. It's much to slow. "Our first 500" the person says. There's some still enthusiastic, but some notice something is wrong. It's too slow. It should have been 50,000, at least 5,000. The person never says anything again. People slowly start going back to their desks. A few moments later, the "pings" of delivered emails start to sound. People get up and start to walk up the stairs towards the director's office. People leave for the day. Those that went up are still gone.

We’re reaching a breaking point in every aspect of the economy where people who understand their products and customers are being pushed out and ran by managers and corporations that have no fucking clue what people want. They think that since they have all this money then they are right and everybody is wrong. It’s a total disconnect from management and corporations vs what the consumer wants. You don’t have to spend $400 million on a game to have a good product. Thinking that throwing more money at a product you want to force on consumers doesn’t mean consumers will like it. Management everywhere is just so fucking out of touch anymore
I am Firewalk Studios, and this, is my game, she weighs 35 gigabytes and fires 200 badly designed characters at 10,000 pronouns per minute. It cost 400 million dollars to launch this game, for 12 days.
I've developed games for 20 years, and part of a AAA studio. It is a well established practice to have playtests, cohort analysis and market research before going down the path of large decisions which led to Concord. Like movies, and much of entertainment today - the fault of this game failures is on the leadership and development team for not speaking up, and not knowing their audience. The players are the victims of woke nonsense, and blaming them is victim blaming rather than taking responsibility for bad decisions. The fact it was not caught is an indictment on the social breakdown and culture war which has crept into business and professional work places straight up.
Game publishing executives make horrible decisions, and everyone else loses their jobs while they give themselves pay increases. The game publishing and development industry is completely broken.
Partially true. By everything the whole studio was filled with people that were making bad decisions. It is just that like always, only those at the top profit from it and those below pay for participating in it.
True but in this case most of the bad designs and decisions with the game were from Firewalk themselves. The game was basically designed and mapped out by the time Sony came along. Yeah Sony greenlit it but the lion's share of terrible were from the studio, not the publisher.
I'm just gonna say it... That money was embezzled. There is zero possibility that they spent 400 million on that game unless it all went to the studio that created the cinematics. Then I understand.
Embezzled or blown. With a long development time and rumors of several iterations of the game being dumped along with a new studio developing it, its entirely possible they just blew through the money at a ridiculous rate on all that stuff and no doubt inflated salaries and office perks. I kinda wonder what Firewalk Studios actual office looks like.
I cannot believe they shelved Last of us online and green lit this for hundreds of millions instead. Insane insane misread that alone shows how out of touch the leadership is.

I have a relative who works at GameStop and she said the store was given two copies of Concord and had to trash BOTH of them. She was even given a promotional voucher for free and was not interested.
Heard that from an acquaintance the other day. They had to rearrange some wall space to make up for the void left by Concord posters (though, it wasn't that much space).
I don't believe for a second Jim Ryan saw the lining on the wall and jumped ship, you're being way too generous too him, he himself is the one that put Playstation in the position it is now, and his legacy will be nothing but the failure to match the expectation of this generation of gamers
"Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer" should be something that every CEO should repeat on a daily basis. Sony really thought that they got enough talent to create Overwatch (3), but the difference is that their designers are shit compared to Blizzard ones - and this is the only thing that keeps Blizzard floating around: they consist of very talented designers and artists (and writers in the past).
The part thats kinda insane is the designers actually dod a good job the first time around, then sweet baby got involved and promptly changed the designs to be more "inclusive".
Sony sits on a mountain of IPs they could've used to make these types of games, instead just burn 400 million on a unproven studio. I wonder what qualifications one might need in order to have a executive position on a company like Sony, cause thats a beyond baffling decision
I can't wrap my head around Sony losing all that money and then giving the guy who cost them all that money a nice comfy gold parachute after he literally screwed them over.
It didn't just go into the furnace. It went to fund the lifestyles of people who made Concord a disaster. How much of that $400m do you think went to the game director Ryan Ellis? I bet he's set for a luxurious life even if he doesn't work another day. It's one huge scam since none of the people who were paid to develop it will suffer any serious consequences.
Really hard to believe that people at Sony thought this was the next big thing. Any casual gamer could look at this for 2 minutes and tell you it’s not the next big thing
$400 million on a game in a genre that has already dropped off dramatically and the delusions that all of this was going to be a ginormous success is mind boggling. Companies need to "leak" alpha version of a game to see what the public sentiment is, if the reaction is good, go for it, if there is criticism, fix it, if nobody gives a crap, shut it down
By removing "toxicity" the balance has been destroyed and now there is too much positivity to refine a product to a correct level to make a serviceable product. There needs to be people who build up good ideas, but there also needs people to get rid of bad ones and to be honest on this fact. If those people don't exist then you get concord and then everyone loses.
Exactly. Everyone's so busy being so nice and perfect all of the time, and making sure they don't show any of the wrong emotions or negativity about anything, sucking up to everyone around them, keeping pronouns in mind, but doing nothing to make sure they're developing something that isn't a bunch of toothless fluff.
Sony spend 8 years and 400 millions in something no one wants and won't even do a upscaled 60 fps remaster of Bloodborne that would cost them almost nothing and sell millions. Sometimes it just feels like those exec spend their entire time in board meetings completely disconnected from the rest of the world. They just look at graphs telling them what games sold well and then blindly try to copy it completely disregarding players interest.
This pisses me off every time I think of it. They basically have a winning lottery ticket with bloodborne and are refusing to turn it in. It’s like they deliberately don’t want to give consumers what we want

Why are execs afraid to fire these people let alone keep hiring them?! I blame the women in these studios, video games are mainly played by men and there dont seem to be any actual men and not simps anywhere to be found in these studios. How, in 8 years, did someone say, maybe not this?! I run a business and it blows my mindhow all of these companies from Bud Light to Disney now to almost every western studio doesnt know their audience, see the room and read it and do that. They cant stop calling gamers ists and phobes on twitter so it isnt like they do not know what were saying now, just simply no excuse imo. Oh well, we needed these studios to crash anyway because the forced monetization was getting out of hand. Once they put a battle pass in single player games, they simply have to perish now

The problem as I see it is development cycles have ballooned so long that they can't keep up with the demand of gamers anymore and the cost to maintain these lengthy development cycles create unrealistic sales expectations. @jfk8540 Exactly. Look how much content is in that? And then we have 400mil....for Concord. I dont think i could pull a heist like this off. Sony got robbed in the middle of the day.
How? Idiocy. We've see over and over that the modern gaming industry is filled with it. They are not looking for talent or anyone competent, they are filling checkboxes. They made a game of checkboxes and it turned out just like we thought it would.
On top of the fact that the 400 million is not part of the cost to buy the studio! (insert mindblow meme here lol)
The problem as I see it is development cycles have ballooned so long that they can't keep up with the demand of gamers anymore and the cost to maintain these lengthy development cycles create unrealistic sales expectations. Used to be 3-4 years was considered a long cycle, and now that's somehow normal, or even on the short end. The only way this generation can push out new content is through remasters. I think we're reaching a breaking point.
They need to extend console generations to like 10 years
Yeah I think you're right
1980's, 1 year was common. By the early 00s, 2 to 3 years was common.
the point you made about The Last of Us Multiplayer is spot on and makes me overwhelmed by chock and frustration over the unbelievable level of stupidity by the decisionmakers! Like, there was literally a near guaranteed year-long goldmine in the making and they go and do all of this!? We're living in Clown world.
Firewalk Studio let off a $400 Million firework for Modern Audience. 😎
The game might actually work if they could swallow their pride and turn it into a parody of itself, but you know that will never happen
Crazy that the $200mil estimation was off by double.
I've been watching various youtubers guessing different numbers over the past few weeks but every single one of them was under lol
Given how lackluster Star Wars has been lately, especially with the Acolyte, I’d argue Sony got exactly what they wanted out of Concord.
That's almost *double* our "worst case scenario"
If I lost $400m of Sony's money I would go into hiding for my own safety
It is always a brilliant marketing move to publicly call your potential worldwide customers all kinds of names.
Like I mentioned on Clownfish TV...
That's $28,571,428.57 a day for this POS game's life cycle... LOLOLOLOLOL
It cost $1,190,476.19 for each hour this game was live, without server costs.
They spent $19,841.27 for each minute the game ended up being up and running....
That's $330.69 for every juicy, fun filled, "Triple A" second of excitement.
Let that sink in...
You are literally saving Sony money by Pirating Concord...if i had lived that long
@@UltimegaSeven Its an online game, so what could you even do with it once you pirate it?? Better yet, why waste storage space downloading that game??
I think G2A and other key resellers are responsible for 22 thousand of that “25 thousand” estimate we keep hearing
Customers like us are finally realizing that we have all the power here. Hopefully we can push all these big companies and big tech companies to listen to us
$125,000 per employee.
400 employees.
8 years.
125000 x 400 x 8
*$400 Million*
only thing i'll say is most people in game dev in washington don't make six figures. they're close, most start at $50k and are lucky to get $70k, rent's $1800-$2k for a 1 bedroom, 1hr commute. not saying it can't be cushy, but $70k in washington is, insanely, barely middle class. the money went to the higher ups.

Imagine, $400 Million could've gone to:
Ratchet and Clank 1,2,3, Deadlock Remakes.
Sly Cooper Trilogy Remake
Jak and Daxter Trilogy Remake.
Twisted Metal 1,2 and Black Remasters.
Wild ARMs ReMake (Do it FF7 style, but with Cell Shaded Graphics)
JetMoto Remake
Ape Escape Remake
Uncharted 1-3 Remake for PS5+PC Port
Killzone Collection w/PC Port
why do you want so many remakes? we need to move on and make new IP's !!!
Or they could have just given that to Japan Studio and have them make Gravity rush 3 and maybe Freedom wars 2 now that first game is coming to PC.
@@DaDoubleDeeI don’t like cash grab remasters either, but Concord is a great example on new IP’s being absolute slop.
Yes I just made a comment about this!!! Its crazy how they were able to make all these games you listed and all within just a few years of each other!!!! Now they can't make a single game in less than 6 years and 5 times the budget!!! WHY? Where did all the talent go???
@@DaDoubleDee Well we could've had all of these + some new IPs...
I don't care about remasters when I own orginal consoles and games
Based
b-b-but the GRAFIX BRO!! YOU MUST buy the 70$ remake of a 6 month old game!! Think of the SHAREHOLDERS!!
physical disks dont age well. most of your games will stop working .
@@AL-lh2ht wash your hands, all my discs still work
@@AL-lh2hti get ps1 games to run, which is like the earliest console to have disks
That budget could have made Bloodborne 2.
it makes total sense.. just paying devs on lower pay scale it would cost them about 200k just to pay them(normally u pay 90k/yr on lower side) for all these year of dev. this is on lower ball park. now add production cost and other stuff it will def go to 300+ mill
Not enough people have bought the new console to completely abandon the old one. The only reason to really buy a ps5 is to upscale your ps4 games. We've had what, 4 new ps5 exclusive games, per year, since console launch? So...spend $500-$900 to play 12-16 games? Wtf?
That is why I'm still on the ps4. That I rarely actually use.
Ps5 has access to newer games not availabe to ps4. Also the slim and regular are fine as is, they didnt need a new console nor to waste money on the coinciding patents needed to produce it.
Concord is definitely a historical moment in video games. I cant wait for a detailed documentary on UA-cam. It definitely deserves one as case study for all to learn from. The question I wanna ask what did they do with all that money? It definitely did not reflect on the game.
It is basically the E.T. of this generation and they can't even hide it in a landfill to put a definitive close to it. Also done at multiple millions of time the time, budget and resources.
"WHAT SHOULD FIREWALK WORK ON NEXT?"

That rant is so fucking on point and well stated. ✋🏻👌🏻
Everyone thought I was crazy for saying $150 million, because most people were guessing $100 million...
Somewhere there’s a gigantic warehouse full of Concord merch just waiting to hit the market.
Jesus Christ what the hell is going with PlayStation with their stupidity. And we still don't get Resistance, Killzone, Infamous games franchises Remakes or Remastered for PS5.
Good question! They obviously have no problem risking huge amounts of money on unproven IP's.
