  • Follow along as I try to figure out what is wrong with my cheap compressor buy. The pump is supposed to be bad, but I was skeptical. I used the compressor to power an air gun during a brake job and it started to really struggle. The pump was dragging down the motor and causing the belt to squeal like a whistle pig! Check back for the video of the resolution, because I found out what was wrong with it. The fix cost me nothing.

    I'm a technician for IR and about 90% of the warranty calls I go to for these lil pumps is do to them not putting oil in them. Sometimes they free up like yours and sometimes they're frozen solid.

      If it won't start check incoming power to the pressure switch and the pressure switch itself. The 5hp units use the pressure switch as the on/auto. The next size up with the 7.5hp uses a starter box with a contactor.

      If you cover the entire site, how do you know if it’s over filled? The site glass is to view level. No oil on glass= empty, 1/2 way up the glass= full, all the up the glass= too full. They put the site glass where the oil level should be.

    I’ve gone through three full-size compressors in the last 10 years. Ever since they started putting more efficient motors on them, they just seem to burn out out fast.

      Scores also on the crap bearing and cylinder wall if there is any in this crap IR pump. I agree with you most likely the previous idiot owner never put any oil in it and seized the bushings. OK, I think there are bearings on the main crank, but unlike USA pumps there is no bearing on the wrist pins.

    some motors have a low oil shut off switch that shuts down the motor before it burns up if the oil is below a certain level, i think that's what's happened here.

      @@n14cummins262262 I'm not a tech, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But some simple checks ought to narrow it down. 1. Is your electric motor getting hot? Mine never does. 2. If you run the tank empty then let it cycle until it is full, does it sound the same when it started to when it gets under full pressure? It should sound a little more labored but not much. 3. Have you taken off the drive belt and just let your motor run? Does it shut down when you do that? 4. Are you sure you have 30 amps? Are both legs of your circuit there at the outlet? It could be your house/shop wiring.
      Again, I'm no tech, but those checks are easy enough. Hope it helps you.

    The problem is you bought by price and not quality.That whole outfit is very low quality so don't expect much.A few more bucks and you would have a real compressor.Splash lubricated,reed valve,high speed,aluminium rods,cheap motor.

    • @GroundhogzGarage
      @GroundhogzGarage  3 роки тому +3

      Since the repair, the compressor has worked flawlessly. By my standards I’ve used it pretty hard since I have had it. Hours of sandblasting, etc. I’m not running a shop, I’m just kicking around the garage. I can’t argue the lack of quality control, but just a 60 gal tank will cost what I have in this thing. If the pump or motor go bad, so what? I’ll buy a new motor or pump and STILL be ahead what this compressor costs new. But so far, I couldn’t be happier.

  • @beachboardfan9544

      While I can't say that you are right or wrong, for the price I got it for, I probably couldn't buy the tank alone. So if something breaks, I'll upgrade the pump and or the motor.
