- Godzilla vs. Kong was my favorite out of Legendary’s MonsterVerse movies simply because the kaiju combat was more fun than in the previous films. While the monster battles completely failed to adequately portray the awe-inspiring scale of these gigantic titans (Shin Godzilla pulled this off exceptionally well, on the other hand), the fights were nonetheless quite enjoyable (embracing the wackiness certainly helped). The plot was bad of course, as one might assume, but what frustrates me most is that the human side of things could have at least been tolerable if you just excise the “conspiracy crew” completely from the movie. With some minor alterations beyond that, I think you could even scramble together a decent story experience from what’s on the cutting board without much difficulty, although I do not expect Godzilla vs. Kong to ever get an alternate improved cut.

I just watched that movie the other day! It was like the movie was on 2x speed. I remarked to my friends that it seems like they had planned for a 2-parter initially, maybe? And then their funding got cut? Or maybe they just read the room lol

I recorded this Godzilla vs. Kong video on a whim a few weeks ago (needed a brief break from hyper-focusing on my recent Stakes analysis), so this is basically a light-hearted personal palate cleanser between my other projects, and I wanted to get it out there before I forgot about it, since it doubles up as a sort of summary on my thoughts on recent Godzilla movies in general.

Hey, not trying to be nosy, but what are your current thoughts on jp/jw, do you like it know, or do you still hate/dislike it?
I 100% agree on the whole size thing. I always want to feel the sense of dread that a normal citizen would feel looking up and seeing something so unbelievably massive. And I have felt that sense of dread in other Godzilla movies but not this one.
Granted some of those previous movies have inconsistancy in size like G dwarfing aircraft carriers and standing up in deep Golden gate bridge waters up to his ankles.
But yeah the rest should have taken some cues from 2014, I especially liked how the city was like ground zero as the kaiju lumbered through streets, that was lost in the following movies.
Really Pacific Rim still holds up the best sense of weight and scale.

Don't let the lower views discourage you! This video was great. You're a "niche animated TV show youtuber" so it throws some people for a loop when you talk about something outside of that sphere. But if you keep making videos about different topics you enjoy I'm sure they'll take off! It worked for Schafrillas

@@unhelpfulrevelations7989 yeah Shin Godzilla is honestly one of my favorite. They managed to get the scale of the monster and the places he destroyed across very well. It also keeps with the series long history of political storylines. The whole thing is a kinda parody of the Fukushima disaster.

I love how the Son of Ishirō Serizawa played like no role in this movie. Not revealing he wanted revenge on Godzilla for taking his father life both Physically and Mentally. And also love the Fact that King Ghidorah Godzilla greatest enemy doesn't take over his mind and is like Is "We Have the same enemy join me and you can be my Forth head. And Together WE CAN BE THE APEX PREDATOR!!

Damn that's a strong point, it should have been more like how Ghidorah was portrayed in the first anime really, its presence could be very eldritch in power and tempting to overpower a human's.
Total missed opportunity, it could have perfectly characterized the Mecha Godzilla too

I don't think anyone goes to Godzilla movies for the plot they go for the action
I agree with you one more difficult things in the legendary monsterverse is trying to make people care about the human characters because mostly people are interested in the monsters they don't give a care about the plot or human characters
Action alone doesn't make a kaiju movie memorable though, monsters have and should have moments for characterization and drama.
Idk if your ever gonna see this or whatever but I just wanted to say thanks seeing your vids once again has reinvigorated my spark for learning and looking at the bigger picture of things while appreciating the smaller things in that picture though your video essay/ reviews I know I am just a whisper in a sea of thousands but still thanks dude it’s been quite the adventure and one hell of a time

Kaijucast did a fascinating breakdown of the film. Apparently the movie was edited down from 5 hours, cutting alot of the context out and only leaving minor hints.
- MG's brain in the beginning in Pensacola can be heard broadcasting the ORCA Alpha sound from KotM.
- The Asian kid in Ghidorah's skull is Serizawa's jaded son.
Both and more apparently was flushed out in the novelization, which only proves the real monsters of this film are the writers...

@@nokopanda4642 It's not, literally there's an opening credits scene in the first five minutes where it goes through showing the various monsters that Godzilla has killed and one of them is King Ghidorah. They killed the big lizard king in a god damn credits scene

they just need to make me give a shit about the humans, i know people are like "oh it's Godzillas film though why bother?" the reason why it is important to have GOOD huan characters in these films is so you can at least relate with something and see the perspective of a human in these kaiju fights, not 1 note characters who only exist to either spew exposition and shoehorned environmental messages, or vomit Marvel level quips every 30 seconds
hell give the Mecha-Godzilla pilot his character back, his reason for hating Godzilla enough to try and kill him was good enough, he was the son of that 1 japanese guy and he felt like Godzilla ruined his life as his father chose to learn more about Kaiju than raise his own son, that right there is a more interesting and compelling character right there, but no instead he gets maybe 1 sentence in before being killed

I abandonned finding interesting the characters of a godzilla movie... until the serie GOdzilla, singular point. It takes it time and i'm engaged in the story. It's fun and i hope it become awesome (it's only the fourth episode as i'm speaking)
There's like only three good characters in singular point the rest are just there to say exposition and science jargon with monster fights thrown in, seriously I know very little about these characters because they don't feel like they're the focus, science jargon is the focus.... Kind of a wasted opportunity I wanted to know more about them.

I also agree that they did a terrible job on portraying their size, but honestly, who would watch 2 slow moving giant monsters fight to the death? I think it's an artistic choice, especially since the film's focus really isn't about realism (2 giant monsters lol), so it didn't bother me that much.
As I said, great video! I hope you keep on making these types of videos, they're always interesting to watch :D

In the original Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla was wearing a fake godzilla skin so everyone thought Godzilla was attacking Japan. So what if in this movie they have Mechagodzilla be disguised as godzilla and attack kongs home. The evil scientists could steal important kaiju documents during the fight. That would give a reason for Kong and godzilla to fight and a reason to team up in the later half of the movie.

An hour long avant-garde King Kong movie told only from the Ape's perspective sounds like something that I would actually enjoy watching, and I have never liked Kaiju movies.

Completely agree with removing the conspiracy team from the movie. I'm not a critical person, but even I was thinking, WHILE WATCHING THE MOVIE, that they served no purpose to the plot!
Also MechaGodzilla was a great 3rd act surprise!
I can't call that a surprise, cause in the first 10 mins Godzilla attacks the Apex facility and right there I was like, "Okay, so Apex is making Mechagodzilla?" And then like 2 minutes later they show the Mechagodzilla eyeball which just confirmed it as the final act.

It might help that I haven't seen King of the Monsters yet, but this felt like a movie to see in theaters, so...
For some reason my parents made me watch this movie even though only my sister had watched any of the prior movies in the series and even I (a girl who didn’t know anything about the universe or characters) didn’t like the scenes about the conspiracy crew and thought it would both make more sense and make a better movie😅😂

and to think When I read the title my inner G fan was about to tackle ya, you make quite a few good ideas! If humans serve any purpose to a monster movie its to give bigger scale to the monster, so your ant shot perspectives would be interesting, getting rid of the conspiracy crew plot will require a little more stuff to explain mechagodzillas whole deal though probably. Like part of the reason Godzillas to grumpy is cause he can sense king ghidorah being used in his creation to maybe show him acting a touch more erratics in hearing things that the humans have no clue on? Orrrr a bit more perspective on whats going on in mechagodzillas head? Over all this rework would be a neat experiment but I still think the movies pretty dang awesome.
I mean, they explain Godzilla is territorial plenty with the parts where Kong is attacked on the ship, so Godzilla's random attacks relating to sensing Mechagodzilla is already implied plenty enough of its own with zero involvement from the conspiracy crew. They could have also totally had a scene where the CEO is giving a dumb speech before getting killed by his creation without the conspiracy crew present at all. He could just be espousing it aloud to whomever is around him in jolly celebration at the height of hubris. Like the conspiracy crew was a full 100% pointless for exposition; that's not even an opinion really, it's just factual.

Being honest, Godzilla vs Kong reminds me of the old Toho Godzilla movies, as in the human stories are confusing and/or boring and/or irrelevant.
While the only thing that actually matters are the monster fights. When done in costumes they were hilariously goofy and entertaining.
Sure, there are some movies where the human side was good, but those were few and far between.
I’d disagree tbh I never loved the human plots in the Toho films but I think a good majority of them were infinitely more interesting than the ones gotten in these Legendary films

I'm asking for a movie where King Kong fights Godzilla, not a movie where a large gorilla fights a 3 meter tall laser-beaming lizard in a miniature city (if you're going to have nonsense physics at least do it with practical effects instead like the Toho stuff). And the creators of the Monsterverse movies really did need to be reminded of how big the kaiju are way more often, because they clearly forgot most of the time based on a lot of the shot composition and placement of people relative to the monsters. (The arrogance to place civilians on the same "level" as the kaiju in a shot, UNACCEPTABLE! One million years dungeon!)
Second Comment: Kong, Skull Island is my favorite of the monsterverse movies because it manages to be a WW2 movie, a Vietnam War movie, and a kaiju movie all at the same time and does it really well somehow. Also John C Reilly and Samuel L Jackson both go so fucking hard in the roles they are playing. Honestly a very god movie.
