The 1st 6000 M39's built at SAKO in 1941 had the straight stock due to not having the machinery for making the pistol grip stock at the time. The stock was made using the pattern from the M28/30 which in itself was also an excellent rifle built for the Civil Guard. The M28/30 was the rifle Simo Häyhä used during the Winter War.
I enjoyed the video. Years ago I somehow accidently found my way into an M39 for $70 at my local gun shop. I knew it was a moisin but I had never seen one like it before. I didn't actually know just what it was until several years later. I took it to the range with surplus Russian ammo and it stacked them on top of each other at a 100 yards. A very good shooting rifle. I was very pleased years later when I learned that they were very collectable and sought after. I want to load some D166 and see what she can do. Thanks guys, I really enjoy your videos.
I agree, However It may be close with the M-39,, They were gone through by the Fin's. But.. Like you I believe that the K-31 would have an edge over the the M-39. I love mine.. Never going to get rid of it.
There is no actual D166 surplus ammo available in the States. So it would be old and crummy Swiss 7,5x55 surplus ammo against hadloaded brand spanking new Lapua D166 bullets with Vihtavuori N140 powder and Brand spanking new Lapua 53R-brass and brand spanking new CCI-primers.. Actually I think some of the barrels on M39s were made by the same folks at Sig that made the K31.. Go figure.. :D
I'm sure that in his network Eric could get some Factory D-166, He has 1.343.445 and growing subscribers, There has to be someone out there who could get him some or tell him where to get it. You are right though, The Handloaded ammo would be a race in it's self. Good point though StPaul76.
I really enjoy watching the range videos, love the live commentary on the Gun and it's history. I'm an English man and would REALLY ENJOY watching another range video (like this one) on the Lee Enfield. :-)
I have one of these, handed down through 3 generations. Still take it to the range every now and then with the old man. So much fun to shoot with the iron sights only.
well done guy .. plzz keep posting more Videos .. I am an English interpreter I working With an american , british & Canadians military trainers here in kurdistan .. really I got a very great benefit from your videos
Got damn, those rounds were smacking the shit outta that target. I absolutely love the sound of lead hitting a steel; one of the most satisfying sounds in the world.
Hi all you Finns, I just want to thank you on behalf of many Americans for your excellent rifles and for Linux, Angry Birds, and those once popular Finnish cell phones that we don't use much any more. You guys make good stuff. Please make us some more! Waiting....
Thanks Eric and Chad,I absolutely love my M39's and K31's so seeing a video on using handloads is great. I must have completely missed the D166 video so I'm going there after this......it was you Eric that got me addicted to the M39 and K31 so thanks again for continuing to do video on this two awesome rifles!!!
I have a pristine M39 that I bought for cheap 30 years ago. With a load that it likes it is astonishing what it will do. 5 shot 100 yards Groups with all holes over laying. Remarkable rifle.
I just wanted to say thanks for all the knowledge I have gained from all your vids. There are tons of large channels like yours but this is the one I always return to. Definitely my favorite non gaming channel although I believe I found this one from the BF1 related video LOL
gromann That's inspiring. I have a typical Russian 91/30 that I put into an archangel stock. I was thinking about digging up an m39 barrel and having it put onto my 91/30. Maybe I'll hold off on that and see what kind of accuracy I can get out of the original before I go dumping even more money into it. I put a Timney trigger into and got a bipod etc etc. Really jazzed it up more than it's worth. Luckily it's a project gun for my son and I don't plan on selling it cause I'll never get out what I put into it. Just wanted to see how much accuracy I could get out of an old milsurp rifle if I gave it some help. I haven't really had a chance to put it to the test but before I put anymore into it I'll see how well it's doing. This is probably more info than you were expecting. Sorry.
Mosins react very well to accurizing. The action lends itself to great feats of accuracy, but that's also why their accuracy is so inconsistent. There may be a 91/30 that did 1 moa out of the factory just because it happened to have that lovely luck of having perfect tolerances from luck. A 3-4 MOA rifle being average - with handloads, bedding and floating, then a better trigger (or just a trigger job) can get very respectable groups. I'd say upgrade the barrel as a last resort if you have good rifling and the crown is intact.
I recently got a M39 in a trade at a gun show. I bought some Monarch green cased ammo from our local Academy and hit the range at my local gun club. I set the ladder at 600 yards and fired at the 24" gong at that distance. I was ringing it 3/5 shots each magazine. I'm very satisfied with the weapon.
I watched this and the reloading video when I was living in UK and couldnt own guns, now that I live back in Finland and have m39 and cant find your reloading videos anymore thanks to YT.......
good video, i personally usa wolf wpa 200gr. match extra in my m39 finns and i get great accuracy and it only costs about 20 bucks a box no need to hand load.
I thought I was alone in that respect LOL!!! I do the same thing. Then, I usually get all giddy and head out to the back acreage for some shooting of my own
Eric & Chad, Barry would be So Proud of you boys, he would dance an Ol' Timers Jig! Y'all Have Done Him Proud! Awesome Video, Thanks Much & Keep Having Fun!
Impressive shooting with iron sights. I took my M39 out the other day and just wanted to empty the case on 6 HLs that were not working that I had for the brass (intended for a PSL) and even with my bad eyes they all were grouped nice and tight. Love those M39s.
Straight stock M39s were all used in combat. It was a small batch made with old specification stocks and those were delivered to border guard units which were advancing into east at the beginning of the continuation war. (And I've got one.)
A Mosin M91/30 was the first gun I ever owned, I still marvel every time at how accurate a 1944 milsurp is. One day I'd like to get my hands on one of the Finnish models.
Hey. I reloaded the rifle M 39 cartridges with Lapua 6,5g bullets. They are accurate up to 150 m. Shooting with this bullet is pleasant the recoil is low. Nice video 👍👍🎯🎯
Hey guys. Had a thought for a video that I think would be really fitting for you bros. A ballistic comparison of various barrel length ARs with a chrono from 100-600 yards. SBR, 14.5, 16, 18 etc all in 5.56 for the guys out there trying to decide what to do with their next build. It would be great to see the benefits and differences with real, tangible evidence to help decide. Hope you guys see this and hope it's not something you guys already have done. Keep it up. Congrats on 1.3M subs! Well deserved!
I ask cause a buddy of mine has harvested several California ground squirrels at our farm at that distance with his hopped up 10/22. He did 3 in one day. If i wasn't there i would not have believed it.
Love the old M39 - the Finns made great guns. Like to see more of old war guns being shot - such as the small ring Mauser 96s, and other European shoulder arms of the previous two world wars.
I was very excited to see the video on reloading the D166, and this is the proof of its deadly reputation. Until I did some long distance shooting myself last year I didnt realize how much the wind factors in. Some might watch this, and think its accuracy was nothing to sing about, but quite the opposite is true, 600 yards, open sights, 20mph crosswinds, is nothing to "sniff-off". I'm 100% confident, if one of those cows had made a mis-step, it would have been met with a very swift end, those rounds struck the plate with plenty of authority.
I must agree with Eric such a nice gun to be old as it is and shoots is remarkable in my view glad to see your still having fun tack care and keep the video clips coming thanks and a hello frump the United Kingdome
Sometimes I curse the fact that I was born a Millennial. I feel like the best days of milsurp collecting has long passed. It just makes it more urgent to start collecting now. I'm hoping to get an M39 as soon as I get a steady job.
Hey Eric, I wanted to share my information for you and the others, now I know what the big "T" in a m39 stock means. Those rifles were kind of a reference rifles which units had and adjusted or checked zeroing of other rifles somehow with those marked rifles. So they were not allowed to be used in combat to avoid losing the reference values in them. I don't exactly know how that was done in practice, but those rifles should be in a better condition than some others. Hope this was helpful and greetings from Finland! PS "T" could indicate "tarkka"=accurate, "tarkistus"=check, inspection etc...
I liked what I saw. 600 yard is by no means an easy shot. I would like to see you guy work up a custom cast bullet load for the M39. For all of us casters it would be great to see you find a bullet mold (albeit custom probably an NOE or accurate mold) that would be awesome in the M39. Lee/ RCBS etc. would be great too as long as it was a great load.
It'd be cool to see y'all do a similar video with the Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55, seing as that still is kinda the go-to caliber here in Sweden when it comes to hunting!
200 grains....600 yards! Sweet! I really like my M39. I would like to change one thing.....the thickness of that front sight blade. I wonder if that might improve the long range results.
i was lucky to get 480 rd.'s of 1999 Yugo brass non-mag. ammo and the groups i get with my M-39 Sako iron sights are amazing with my old eyes. these M-39's are truly the best Mosin there is. i'll put it up to my 98 Mauser anytime even with the good 8mm ammo i have for that. the sights on M-39's make it easier than the Mauser.
Some things we'd all like to see: Pattern 17 Enfield video; K31 vs M39 at range; "Winter War Special"; m1903a4 at 600 yards; scoped milsurps; milsurp shotguns; more milsurps in general. Thank you.
Nice shooting. I would love to see that that Tikka of yours can do and maybe that B-barrel. And then yea put it up against the K31 or the K11 at that range. Would be a heck of a day of shooting
53R was the bullet what Lapua design just for finnish mosins. Finnish army wanted the most accurate round so they design bullet to match the rifle. It was the starting point for their own designs.
I have three pre 1898 receiver M39s. Only shot out to 150 with them. Would love to stretch their legs some. Great guns. I'll have to check out your D166 vid and work up a load for them. Been shooting 203 grain Brown Bear out of them.
I have done some reloading with this recipe, however, I ended up with a load at 42.5 g of N140 pushing the 200g bullet. I also found it's really pointless to use any other brass besides Lapua. But, that could be because I'm using a Lee Classic loader. It's tedious, but I measure each powder load with my digital scale and set each bullet buy hand with the Lee Loader. I'm getting one inch 3 shot groups at 100, sometimes better, sometimes not as good. Hard to get real precision shots with the sights on the M39.
Funny, I was just at a long range yesterday here in Ohio and 1st shot at 600 hards set at 550 on my M39 was a hit on the plate. I was tempted to quit there. Lol. That was barnaul 174 grain as well. I'll load up some real lapua stuff soon and see what it does
Where could one get ahold of a 91/30 to sporterize and load for with a good clean bore. ie little to no pitting or even an unfired rifle. Are those even still around?
hi no one seems to care over here in England but I've secured funding to attend the SDI I cannot wait even though I've got to there wait lists crazy long
I'll second that! I would like these guys or Hickok45 to do a Norwegian Drag video. I have a Springfield Krag and a Norwegian one. Unfortunately someone put a rubber Western Field recoil pad on the Norwegian. I've located an original butt plate but when the rubber pad was installed the stock was cut, I'll have to shorten it again to get the correct angle. The bore on mine is dark but has strong rifling.
You haven't considered just looking for a new stock? I have the same issue with my K98, in addittion it lacks the upper forend. Or you can jsut leave it as it is.
3ducs I have an 1899 Springfield Krag, at 100 yards even with factory loaded ammo it shoots just about 4 inches low but a 3 shot group with holes almost touching. With hand loads to as close to spec with 220 grain round nose, it shoots POA with similar results. Finding a nice old US military 30-40 Krag nowadays is getting more difficult. I was lucky, mine has all the original accessories (the brass end cap, tools in the stock, sling, and bayonet that's marked "1899" and matches the gun completely). Love those old Krags, smoothest bolt action milsurp I have ever encountered.
The 1st 6000 M39's built at SAKO in 1941 had the straight stock due to not having the machinery for making the pistol grip stock at the time. :)
So thats really m39.. Looks very much like 28/30. Just like my own.
Thank you for the info.
Was about to say this one doesn't have the semi pistol grip, thanks for the info
need this in my life!
yes you do, you need more milsurps on your channel and you need a wood stock on that M1A you just reviewed ;)
CAted 1996 ^^^^ He's right ya know..??
Eric please, do more videos about the M39. I love that rifle. Thanks for this video
They took the original reloading video down its on Full30 now. Thanks Eric! Buying a mint condition M39 SKY right now.
Watching this video makes me proud of being a Finn.
I enjoyed the video. Years ago I somehow accidently found my way into an M39 for $70 at my local gun shop. I knew it was a moisin but I had never seen one like it before. Thanks guys, I really enjoy your videos.
You and Chad need to do a shoot off.. The M-39 Vs. the K-31 @ 600 yards.. Handloaded and Service surplus ammo. Now that would be a good Video. Dave.
GP11 kicks ass
Yep.. I love mine.. I did a Video on my channel with the up graded sights (Diopter) Available from Swiss products. 1/4 inch groups. @100 yards.
I agree, However It may be close with the M-39,, They were gone through by the Fin's. But.. Like you I believe that the K-31 would have an edge over the the M-39. I love mine.. Never going to get rid of it.

1800 feet with open sights, and a gun that is what, 80 to 90 years old? That is way beyond cool. Big fun.
You all had already sold me on eventually getting an M39! Such a beautiful rifle and I love great engineering. Thanks for sharing.
I have 2 now. Amazing rifles.
well done guy .. plzz keep posting more Videos .. I am an English interpreter I working With an american , british & Canadians military trainers here in kurdistan .. really I got a very great benefit from your videos
It'd be cool to see the mosin, Mauser, enfield, Springfield and other milsurp bolts side by side at long range
I just bought a 1916 Spanish Mauser in 7 mm Mauser from J&G Sales. I absolutely love this rifle!
I am thinking about buying one in 7.62x51 next.
7mm Mauser is an awesome round I have a Chilean 95 short and it’s a plate ringer all day.. smooth action too .
Got damn, those rounds were smacking the shit outta that target. I absolutely love the sound of lead hitting a steel; one of the most satisfying sounds in the world.
perkele
Tässähän pitää käydä torilla melkein päivittäin kohta.
Karjala takaisin!
suomalainen voima (3/4 finnish here)
No nyt on kyllä hurja meininki.
Hi all you Finns, I just want to thank you on behalf of many Americans for your excellent rifles and for Linux, Angry Birds, and those once popular Finnish cell phones that we don't use much any more. You guys make good stuff. Please make us some more! Waiting....
I'm a simple man, I see milsurps I press like.
M39 = instaupvote
dreyrugr well said man ...I feel the same way✌
Same. Wood and iron all the way.
Im a simple man too.... i see milsurps and i buy them 😂
I'm a simple man, I see milsurps and I buy them. That's why my wife doesn't let me go to gunshops without supervision!
Swiss K31 vs Finnish M39 vs Russian 91/30 vs 1903 Springfield vs German Kar98 at 600 yards.
I'm surprised they still bring back good old memories Barry I do miss him a lot from go back to the old videos and listen from him
Moving to the US was the best choice I ever made. I love my wife and I love my guns!
Where did you move from?
I just wanted to say thanks for all the knowledge I have gained from all your vids. There are tons of large channels like yours but this is the one I always return to. Definitely my favorite non gaming channel although I believe I found this one from the BF1 related video LOL
You guys are great. MY FAVORITE GUN CHANNEL
Do a comparison test between finnish m39 and the russian standard mosin! please
depends on the condition of the russian barrel
Bleach That would be an interesting video. I'd love to see that too. Just to see how much better the Fin does.
Sanford Hoffman you know, with handloads my 91/30 seems to shoot a little better than my m39.
gromann That's inspiring.
If Eric is high and left we have a serious problem :)
I like your last name Mr. Sýkora.
😂
I watched this and the reloading video when I was living in UK and couldnt own guns, now that I live back in Finland and have m39 and cant find your reloading videos anymore thanks to YT.......
Absolutely love the sound at the start when the round was going into the dirt
good video, i personally usa wolf wpa 200gr. match extra in my m39 finns and i get great accuracy and it only costs about 20 bucks a box no need to hand load.
I enjoy these types of videos from you guys, you are lively characters that are fun to watch shoot.
I cuddled with my M39 while watching this video
alaskajohn907 I know the feeling...I like to get out and fondle guns appropriate to the video I'm watching.
I thought I was alone in that respect LOL!!! I do the same thing. Then, I usually get all giddy and head out to the back acreage for some shooting of my own
mauser 98 600 yard please.thanks for great videos
Better be seeing the Lee Enfield after that
mauser 123 He just did a video on that
Eric & Chad, Barry would be So Proud of you boys, he would dance an Ol' Timers Jig!
The Finnish m-39 is not an off the rack mosin. It is a refurbished mosin. A much better rifle than a conscript mosin.
Eric did u know that people actually use the M39 and K31 at the Camp Perry vintage rifle matches
Well deserved!
challenge: i would like to see a .22lr out of chad's hoped up 10/22 on gelblocks at 600 yards
Next to no penetration
Chad Dieffenbach i have gotten milk jugs to spill water that's about it at around 550
I ask cause a buddy of mine has harvested several California ground squirrels at our farm at that distance with his hopped up 10/22. He did 3 in one day. If i wasn't there i would not have believed it.
Chad Dieffenbach you'd be surprised
jared Noah agreed.
Simo Häyhä, got over 800 kills with one of those rifles durring the winter war with no scope.
Since the M39 rifle emerged after the Winter War Simo's feat was not only extraordinary but unbelievable...
Love the old M39 - the Finns made great guns. Like to see more of old war guns being shot - such as the small ring Mauser 96s, and other European shoulder arms of the previous two world wars.
the sound of ringing steel is a great thing. did some of that Saturday.

Where is this video on reloading the D166? Im very interested !
Thanks
I've been waiting for this vid! My body is ready!
Taylor Petty Is your statement up for interpretation?
I must agree with Eric such a nice gun to be old as it is and shoots is remarkable in my view glad to see your still having fun tack care and keep the video clips coming thanks and a hello frump the United Kingdome
Six hundred yards in the wind with an off the rack antique rifle and you're still hittin' steel! Nice shootin, Eric!
Love the long distance videos guys!! Keep up the great work.
Love my M39, great video. Love seeing y'all shoot!
Sometimes I curse the fact that I was born a Millennial. I feel like the best days of milsurp collecting has long passed. It just makes it more urgent to start collecting now. I'm hoping to get an M39 as soon as I get a steady job.
Just put a order in for some 7.62x53r and a box of d166 projectiles not a bad way to burn through $250 the joys of living in Australia
Hey Eric, I wanted to share my information for you and the others, now I know what the big "T" in a m39 stock means. I have m39 it was captured by the Finns and Sako modified it. super accurate
550 meters, damn thats good shooting!
Krasi Radev is that what 600yards is. well a thousand yards is 920meters
548.64 meters
It'd be cool to see y'all do a similar video with the Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55, seing as that still is kinda the go-to caliber here in Sweden when it comes to hunting!
You need to revisit the "how far will a 12 gauge kill" thought y'all were going to make a follow up vid when you had a bigger range...cant wait
Mahtavaa kivääri! Terveiset Suomesta!!
AWSOME video as always brother. Great shooting.
“Uh, Eric... that’s not a milking cow” I freaking lost it haha 😂
how about Finnish Mosin vs Swiss K31? both seem to be among the best of the old milsurps in terms of accuracy...
love hanging out with you guys, the finns still build good guns.
Do you guys have a microphone near that gong ? It sounds much clearer and closer than usual. Superb content as always !
200 grains....600 yards! Sweet! I really like my M39. I would like to change one thing.....the thickness of that front sight blade. I wonder if that might improve the long range results.
Pressing thumbs up at 0:02, this'll be a good one!
Nicklas Bergström glad I wasn't the only one! thumbs up for your comment!
I really need on of these in my life.
Flag's and explaining wind and vapour trail's? Maybe table-cam under rifle for a shot or two?
i was lucky to get 480 rd.'s of 1999 Yugo brass non-mag. ammo and the groups i get with my M-39 Sako iron sights are amazing with my old eyes. these M-39's are truly the best Mosin there is. i'll put it up to my 98 Mauser anytime even with the good 8mm ammo i have for that. the sights on M-39's make it easier than the Mauser.
LOL.yea once you found the hold it was spot on.Looks like too much fun.
Some things we'd all like to see: Pattern 17 Enfield video; K31 vs M39 at range; "Winter War Special"; m1903a4 at 600 yards; scoped milsurps; milsurp shotguns; more milsurps in general. Thank you.
I also saw a hawk above the target at 8:30.
Am I only the one that loves the sound when he misses.. reminds me of those suppression scenes in war movies
you have made me a fan of the mosin and im going to have to get one. so keep the videos coming.
y'all need a video transmitter system for this long range stuff. And another camera for wider angles to help id the misses.
Love the M39 videos!! Keep it up!
Very entertaining watch. Wouldn't mind watching more!
Nice shooting. I would love to see that that Tikka of yours can do and maybe that B-barrel. And then yea put it up against the K31 or the K11 at that range. Would be a heck of a day of shooting
Aww, that comment about Barry just made me smile
53R was the bullet what Lapua design just for finnish mosins. Finnish army wanted the most accurate round so they design bullet to match the rifle. It was the starting point for their own designs.
hard to hit something when it disappears behind the front sight post. plus wind. fun stuff
that is why you sit the target on top of the front post ;)
M39's have elevation adjustable rear sight posts.
love the videos lately
CF update on 10/2/17 says there won't be any more M39s coming out of Finland. Makes me want to cry.
Definitely wanna see more Mosin stuff, or milsurp stuff in general, even if it's sporters that you've worked on. Really interesting.
Going to look at one today. Hope it is in good condition
That snap sound is so awesome
Nice velocity on the bullet, not that long from you pulling the trigger and the hit.
I'd like to see M39 YugoM48 and K-31 sporter builds. Maybe shoot some paper groups sometime as well with optics and not irons.
Show more Finnish m39, up grades, ammo improvements. Thanks
You could say the cows were 'moooving targets!' (sits in corner in shame!) ;)
hi no one seems to care over here in England but I've secured funding to attend the SDI I cannot wait even though I've got to there wait lists crazy long
Man I'm looking forward to se them do the Norwegian Krag. Just hope they have a good one, I know a lot of them are shot to death...
I'd like to see the Steyr Manlicher, Model 95(long rifle) in the rechambered 8x56R
I would like to see you shoot a 1903 springfield at distince. Not the a3, the wwI version.
Could you show us a proper stock replacement for an M39 seeing as these rifles are a might scarce but I see stocks all over the place.
