You haven't mastered Japanese unless you were in mutual love with a girl, but neither of you was able to express their love to the other in a way that came across, so you ended up talking past each other and the beautiful love you could have had together never came to be, because of several hundreds of consecutive misunderstandings. Why did she keep calling my thing a moon?! Is it because I am round like the moon?!? Did she call me fat and I just didn't get it?!?!?
I have straight up said this to a boss. I should specify that I actually had that kind of relationship with my boss where they were okay with me saying stuff like that.
@Raymart Lipat I doubt Japanese and English have cognates. They're too far apart linguistically. For honne and honest to be cognates their common ancestor must be thousands of years in the past. Pretty much impossible with such words.
@Neohybrid Kai I'd say Westerners are fake just in a different way. Here in the West many people assume Japanese people are meaning it when they're so polite, rather than being just a social norm. Social norms in the West look less formal, but they are not as genuine as many non Westerners would think. Fake positivity and forcing a smile is a very well known American thing. Obviously, this is just a generalization and every person is different here and there
Neohybrid Kai Westerners tend to be _a lot_ more straightforward on the internet than in person. More or less so depending on the person. A lot of people on the internet would never say the stuff they do to someone’s face

A couple ppl talking about the difs in translation, but I always thought that was just Dogen's creative license and having some fun with localization. The jokes may or may not translate the same literally, but I think he's just upping the ante on either version to make it funnier. Or more interesting. He did something similar on a short story vid a while back iirc. I mean, sure some people who know about Japan may have heard of love hotels, but if you don't then the joke is lost. Or whatever other example. Also love hotel sounds wack in English, maybe that's partly it.
Yeah plus the fact that since English and Japanese grammar are complete opposites, if there's a joke where he stops partway through a sentence and doesn't finish it, there's not really any way to translate it literally. ~:~
I was going to say that you shouldn't have kept the tatemae-smiling fot the honne part, too, but on second thought, it's just even better to hear it behind the same faces.

Just wanted to chime in and say I saw your channel referenced elsewhere and wondered if it was THAT Dogen from waaaay back in the day who did the excellent tricks tutorials videos - and lo and behold it is! Cool to see you stuck with the content.
Yesterday we were shown this video in our university during a lesson on Honne and Tatemae (for BA JAPANESE course 3rd year DSE) And man could we hold our laughter in XD There wasn't a single person in the room who din get a stomach ache from laughing after watching this😂 The reason we had such a great shock upon seeing the honne was,we were asked to First guess with our teammates and write down what places Tatemae must have been used in the conversation. And we honestly, never in our wildest dreams could have thought that in reality, it was Tatemae from start to finish, that too with such an intense war goin on beneath the surface 😂 The funniest part was that right after the video my teammate commented saying "ii shatsu kiteiru ne" to me and I felt super touched and was in the middle of saying thank you when i suddenly stopped and realised that he was actually using Tatemae, cuz after saying that he lowkey turned his head to hold in his laughter 😂
From the view of a typical Japanese, this is absolutely amazing stuff. Probably it would be a bit hard to understand for foreigners but we’ve already knew it(that it hardly happen in other countries), so don't hesitate to visit here! Additionally, I'm sure I heard that there's the same notion in the UK...or maybe my mistake. Sorry for my poor English😇
It happens in English speaking countries too. We have a lot of ways to deliver insults/brutal honesty with a smile in the right situations (that is to say, when it's not a good idea to be honest). "You're looking well.", "Have a nice day.", "Thank you." can mean so many things and many of them are not nice. I can't stand such fakery. There's also a saying in English: "If you don't have something good to say, say nothing.". Probably the reason I doze whenever I am around people! LOL
Things that might confuse foreigners: 1) expectations to bring small souvenirs to your colleagues after you take a holiday; 2) expectation to drink with your boss after work. The rest is pretty much universal.
Pretty sure mental health problem in both Japan and the UK is majorly contributed by this social culture/norms. Every countries has them but omg. As a British person myself, I get confused about what I really think myself a lot.

It's not exclusive to Japan, but compared to the west (broadly speaking) it's far more extreme.
