Thank you very much for the explanation of the Japanese social norms in their context. I love the respectful behaviour of the Japanse. Your story is clear and told with every word in the right context! ❤

When I was in Kyoto many years ago, I truly appreciated the feelings of safety & harmony coming from everyone. And I was also left with a lingering curiosity of what people were like behind closed doors with no public pressure to maintain harmony. But I would go back to Japan on a second!

My bad experience in Japan, in my 18 years living here was in train stations. I was once pushed by salary man on train station platform, then he got angry with me for being in his way. On a crowded train one day I was stepped on and elbowed by the young woman standing next to me. Then one day while buying a train ticket, an old woman came at me saying "I was using that ticket vending machine first, you are stealing my money" she waited until I put money in the machine to come at me. I ended up letting her buy her ticket and taking my change, because I didn't want to make a scene in front of my toddler son who is half Japanese btw.
