- Welcome to Kuressaare on Saaremaa island, there's an abandoned light house to go find and the only thing between me and it is 40 miles of flooded dirt roads and 6 hours of sunlight. Things don't go according to plan, but the adventure was worth it.

Matt in the country where is no mountains, in the flattest area of that country "it has been uphill for a last 10 kms" :D
Haha, it certainly felt uphill
@@YesLandTravel But yeah, you could totally do that in summer, first, those dirt roads would be dry, daytime would be basically 21 hrs and it would be warm. And also, there would be loads of places to put a tent up...and lot of places to buy local beer or foods...
So you cycled almost 100km that day? Huge props, I like cycling but couldn't manage that trip, was fearing it ending in disaster down those muddy paths. Totally know what you mean about saddle sores!
Loved joining you on a real adventure. So pleased when you made the decision to turn back. The landscape was beautiful - you're much braver than me.
Your vacations are my nightmares. Respect for the determination, my man.
I'mma tryin'!
ok also...not really much of a trigger but tried to clip 2:34.3 to 2:49.3, which was the defualt
So... I'm halfway through the video, and this has been an exceptional journey. I love the way you play up the drama even though we all know that the camera crew is standing by with the van... lol.
I love ya, brother... trek on!
Yeah, the whole crew were having a good laugh then we hit up a casino. haha
😂
Loved that opening travel montage!
Got that idea from @OutdoorBoys they make amazing videos I think
If living in UK then before You go Estonia practice wheater in Shetland island in october end time.
ok but...the turkish delight video was the first time I ever thought "ok somethin's happenin' here"
Hi Matthew, sorry that you didn't make it to your destination of Saaremaa, Estonia. At least you can say that you tried your best to make it but it just wasn't possible. This was a good journey in that you got a lot of fresh air and exercise. Loved your one liner of "Hope there are no spiders". With your journey being so scarcely populated it is good that your bike got you back along with your determination to make it work. Onwards and upwards till next time Matthew.
It was fun and honestly the journey was worth it so i'm happy about how it ended up in the end. Thank you for watching!
Can't deny it, but my wife and I were laughing quite a bit watching your Saaremaa trip. We took couple of summers ago 3-4 day long bicycle trip in Saaremaa and the stong wind was there in summer time as well. We completely understand your experience. But the island is filled with amazing places to discover. :)
Also, it was great to see that you liked Tallinn and had the opportunity to see its different sides. The next time you are going to visit Estonia we must get you a better bike or if you like, then a small trip with a car to all the weird and wonderful places.
Haha, yeah a better bike and some more planning next time I'm there!
Matthew, once again, you give me the content my heart truly needed. Real-ness in the most authentic way! All your videos are a unique glimpse into the culture and the actual "street view" of the places you visit. However, this video stands out because it honestly depicts the constant decisions one must make with this sort of travel. It also depicts the subsequent efforts of weighing energy expenditure with genuine risk and also spontaneous adventure while adjusting to decisions. Thank you for keeping in all the details of the decisions, your thought processes, and how those evolved. What a great video!
This was such a kind comment I really am trying to give an authentic experience with these videos, I want that to be a trade mark for the channel so thank you!
You know when the long journey is through. The only thing that truly changes is you. And you hardly ever change.
Great video!
I'm always trying to improve and this taught me some lessons. This is honestly my favourite video I've ever made and yeah, I've learnt what I enjoy when travelling for sure.
I'm sorry you had to abort your mission, but it really was the right decision, considering circumstances. I've been at that lighthouse. The last couple of km is soft sand and that slows you down significantly. Going on a bike would be better to take a tent and plan to camp. There are hiking trails and some other interesting stuff in the area. The lighthouse itself, however, is worth to take on. When i was there, it was possible to climb up the lighthouse, although it was not easy - you had to swim to get to the base of the thin and the somehow climb up to the doorway, that was about 1.5 m above waterline (that is ofcourse subject to change), but you are standing about chest height in water. The ladder to the top was rusted to a mere twig-sized sketchy contraption. I lived and the view was superb. I hope you are able to finish your trip sometime later, while it's warm outside.
It was a brave undertaking, and next time you know what to expect and how to plan better. But please, just take more water with you next time! Hydrate! X
I did a lot of the things I'd tell someone else not to do...
00:38 that is not cold . Estonian cold record is minus 43 C and average autumn is + 10 unti minus 6. Therte I no see even ice or snow. Yes Estonia is nortic country like Canada and Sweden and Denmark . Be ready if You go here.
I would say it wouldn't be that bad to hitch in those small roads, i mean, if there is a car riding, it will probably at least stop...maybe helps you, maybe gives you home brewed beer...but they will stop
Yeah, I think that would have been ok if i'd needed to in the end. Everyone I met in Estonia was really nice honestly.
“Look at all those ducks. I like them!” -quote of the video
I call them as I see them
Sometimes it's not the destination, it's the journey (allegedly) No doubt you'll still find some unexpected beautiful things out there.
I'm glad I tried and that's the important thing!
Great video! I like that you're trying the scooters more. Looks like fun. I did have anxiety nearly the whole time, wondering if you'd keep going or turn around & be out in the cold! The shots of you riding by the camera were a good choice. The way the path kept getting worse, though, 😅
Glad you found a cat in the end!
I am sold on Scooters they are great!
The adventure of things is always worth it. This looked so enjoyable.
Exactly man!
A lot of things sound good at the time but hey at least you got video of your (mis)adventure. Ignorance and determination ftw! Lol
Edit: I could still hear your voice over the wind so still good! 😂
I mean, at least is was an adventure.
YEAH!!! Screw You Road!!!!!!!!! Also, Mystical Cat is a jerk !!
Super Entertaining Video ... sort-of in the same way watching someone play a Soulsborne game for the first time is 💜😇💜!!!
haha, yeah it had that feeling in my heart for sure.
Call the video " No tailwind" :) it`s the rule in Estonia if you cycle
I really thought this was going to end with you camping in really cold air if not freezing rain at the lighthouse because you ran out of daylight.
As much as it sucks not getting there, I was happy to see you turn back when you knew the daylight wouldn't last.
Here's to the rest of Estonia!
I really thought about that honestly!
Sorry you didn't make it but you gave it a hell of a go. Love this channel.
Yeah, it was a good try but there's always next time. Thank you for the support
I was hoping you had turned back soon enough to explore that museum, and the abandoned factory, but I understand pushing hard for that lighthouse as it looked cool as f.
I know you were disappointed, but I'm glad you trusted your gut and listened to your body and turned back before it was too late. Plus, you got to eat that big ol' cake thing as a treat for trying.
The cake made up for a lot of it really.
I'm sorry you didn't make it, but what a beautiful scenic (if boggy) ride.
Haha, it could have gone a lot worse... which is prehaps the new catchphrase for the show
@@YesLandTravel I endorse this 😊
01:13 traffic rulew breaking. There look is crosswalk and local tax payers pay that 5,2 km long crosswalk ca 10,8 million euros and You walking on driveway. = police can take ticket at least 50 euros. Be respectful and no breaking rules.
Always good to watch your travel videos Mathew and as you say at least you tried 🙂
A worthwhile and valiant effort and I still very much enjoyed watching your adventure.
The ups and downs...had me on the edge of my seat! Great footage as always
Thank you so Alana, the downs won this time but it was a great experience
It is unfortunate that the road was that bad. But still this was a lovely adventure. Hope the next one is better.
PS: I had a sugar crash from just lookin at that beverage :D :D :D
Haha, I've got some plans for the future. The drink was pretty good honestly just what I needed. I'd have drank anything at that point though
Only last 9 km's is gravel road, but he was gonna fail anyways. Last 2-3 km's are part of the hiking trail, so suitable only for walking/mountain biking. But the thing is, there are parts thatcan be under water this time of the year, and a lot also depends on the wind direction.
soldier on
This summarizes hopes and disappointment of life on Earth 2020-2023. But onwards and upwards, you gotta give things a good shot, which you did. You rode really well- that was so far! Hate to say it, but judging from Google reviews of the lighthouse, everyone drives there, then hikes/bikes the final hour. 🤔
Yeah, I was like 'drive there? I could cycle that easy...'
True adventure!
It felt like one for sure.
I saw a report on the news about a guy found dead on the side of the road on Saaremaa Island with a 5 pack of coke. I'm not implying anything, but I'm assume some nice fella did what he had to do and only took what they needed.
It's the way of the road. Leave only footprints and never fingerprints.
Never been to Estonia, but I've known about Saremaa since the 6th through geography books and now the Internet. So, I was instantly attracted to your video thinking I was going to end up having a better idea about the place. However, this was a really bad video and a lot of wasted time hearing your whining about your bad decisions and seeing your lack of common sense and normal organizational skills before you travel! I mean, Saremaa is not famous or known outside of Estonia, so everyone was expecting a fun, little trip to check out the sights! Instead of that, you wouldn't even show the moated castle or the main town Kuresaare because you were fixated all day on trying to reach some stupid light house that's not even spectacular (I checked that online)! Next time, Google your routes and sites, so you wouldn't waste something else's time! 😠
How full of saddle soreness based regret were you the following day?
A none zero amount...
