I absolutely need this, got a different brand but very similar one two weeks ago and am totally where have you been all my life, or at least the last 20 years when I have had two pine trees in the yard. Your pine needles are very sparse but when you have a lot it clogs the mower catcher after a few steps. This lets me quickly and easily pick up the pine needles and cones quickly before mowing. It doesn’t matter that it doesn’t pick up all, that it gets up most of them before I mow saves me a huge amount of time overall.
I got my sweeper from my father. It is ~ 65 years old,and still chugging along. I have lots of mature elms, and they drop tons of leaves in the fall. The sweeper works great, but the catcher fills up fast, sometimes in one pass,so it has to be dumped frequently. If you are going to use it for leaves, you should use a large tarp, which allows you to quickly empty the catcher simply by turning the machine upside down on the tarp. Nowadays,I use my electric lawnmower with bagger attached, which chops up leaves, saving yard waste bags.
Back is the 70s Sears had a 36 inch gas powed version of this they worked great! Good to see the whole family getting involved with lawn care. This is a good non powered tool to step the kids in to cutting grass Great video thanks! Im still looking at 5 inches of snow cover, so its a good reminder what green grass looks like ! 😊
Wow, I bet the gas one worked better but this is pretty cool for making no noise and using no power...for the kids at least. I do think it's over priced but at least it doesn't feel cheap. Enjoy that snow while you got it, it'll be gone before you know it. Ours melted and I expected more to come for sledding and skiing but man. It just dried up-going to be another dry year I fear. Thanks for watching Mark!
Curious how well this might do thinning out, melting out grass… versus a full fledge dethatching. Will it pull loose debris, dead grass? Low enough to be used in this manner?
Best investment I made and only thing that gets those pine needles. Can’t believe your starting this early in the year! We’re getting a foot of snow today in. Es England!
I've been watching the weather reports for you guys; good luck getting through another wave of harsh winter. We got really cold this week but stayed quite sunny so that helps a ton keeping soil warm - by far though, this is the earliest I've ever really started a season. It's weird and cool :)
I got the Agri-Fab version which has stiff, dense bristles more like a stiff broom. Very different from the tines on the Earthwise. I am shocked every time I use it how amazing it picks up. It also does a great job of simultaneously laying down stripes!
Oh I love it when I can get the wife out in the lawn! I think it'll happen more this year, hospital work has to ease soon 🤞 I'd love to try it on acorns but I don't know anyone in my town that has acorns to test it on.
I doubt it would fluff much. Maybe a bit for taller cut grass but I wouldn't count on it doing a lot. Even in the vid you can see I had to adjust the height setting to get the tines to turn reliably. Basically when they hit a lot of resistance they just didn't turn. Using to fluff up grass might be too much resistance I think.
I really love your "TurfNerd" enthusiasm! With some minor modifications to the wheel grip on that chingus it would take it from meh to woo hoo! It's fun you involve your family too! I'm going to aerate my lawn for the first time ever. Any tips? Or, most important thing to do first?
If your going to aerate I'd recommend power raking first with the ground level or higher setting on a dethather to remove a bunch of dead material...then cut the grass even if it's dormant as low as you can. It's far easier to aerate a lower cut lawn with excess surface debris removed than it is to do otherwise. Then I'd advise softening the soil with water or even liquid aerate a couple days prior to aeration to help pull the best cores possible. Even the mechanical aerators pull better cores when the soil is softened up a bit. Search for "before aeration" on YT and rewatch my vid on that topic from last summer if you'd like. Good luck! With the weather we've had recently I bet your lawn is in full growth now or at least very close to it already.
@@TurfMechanic Thanks for the great tips. I have really learned to embrace turf care as a hobby as you stated. Very satisfying to go from plain weed infested dirt to a usable pleasant to the eye and feet extra outdoor living space! Just curious if you might know why a small patch of my new lawn went dormant and all the rest is green. Makes me scratch my head. Hmm..
I just bought the same sweeper, but have yet to use it ! Oddly, I read where someone said you can use them to sweep snow, obviously if isn't too deep, and probably a specific light, dry fluffy snow ? As to your remark about some debris shooting out, I seen that on another video as well, and thought maybe I would experiment with first maybe a cardboard piece, extending into the bag a bit to offer some direction to those pieces ? Thanks for posting ! Sadly, we're heading into our Winter ! Drats ! 👍😉
Thanks David, and I agree, its a bit overpriced. If I wasn't running this channel I don't think I ever would have bought it. I get questions about these from time to time though so I want to have some experience using one.
I agree and would say that kids should be learning how to use many different tools while they are young. We have kid safe kitchen knives and my kids all know a bit about using basic hand tools safely already. My two year old even has her cordless drill tool that she plays with in the house while she "fixes the walls" :D. My favorite days are those when the kids help me or my wife wife out in the yard or garden. Thanks for being here Gary! Hope Fall is treating you well!
Since I was already in trouble over the meat thermometer aka “soil temperature probe “ decided to use the Dyson cordless stick vac on the front lawn. She would have never known until I hit that one dog turd . Nothing can repel that smell and I was forced to tell her I failed our relationship again!
I was able to do this last year too although we toggled back and forth from warm 50 degree days and cold snow. This year it's been super dry and sunny for the last 5 weeks! I actually broke a sweat yesterday working my Yard Butler. I suspect the best use for that sweeper is really just to stay on top of leaves in the fall. I don't think it'll pick up much thatch debris or aeration cores but I haven't tried yet. It's kinda like a push reel dethathcher only not nearly as strong.
I tried that and it picked up some but wasn't worth the effort. I had to back and forth way too many times and the cores got way too heavy as it collected them.
I don't know yet. Haven't had a chance to try it on pine cones or on fall leafs. I only bought mine in January or so. I'm hopeful it will be useful in the fall.

I bet that would work really well on acorn pickup too! Love it when you involve the family

I wonder how well it work to collect rocks and various size twigs/branches.
Oh how fun
It was fun, the kids love it!
Would this double as a rake to fluff up matted grass after winter too? Or does it solely pick up loose debris?
I doubt it would fluff much. Maybe a bit for taller cut grass but I wouldn't count on it doing a lot. Even in the vid you can see I had to adjust the height setting to get the tines to turn reliably. @@TurfMechanic ok, thanks!

Any links to a serious and actual demonstration of this sweeper?
Good video! Enjoy it BUT MORE important - SPEND LOTS of FAMILY TIME!!!

That would really work well on my yard, but not for that price. Ouch. Another great video.

Kids should be using (or just being around) garden tools

Are the plastic brush effective in picking up leaves?

I'll buy one IF it will pick up cores after aeration. I cant imagine it can do that.

@@TurfMechanic leaves vs leafs
Everytime I walk past that at my local menards I'm tempted to buy it..but never pull the trigger..
I've been tempted for a while, never seen one locally and now I have to find a way to justify this purchase to the wife and the IRS lol 😂
@@TurfMechanic the IRS is the easy one 😉
So it’s a manual reel mower, but with little fingers as blades?? Now I gotta have it.
Lol! That's the die-hard attitude of a true addiction 😆👊
