At the end of 2017, rookie Slopestyle MTB rider Emil Johansson was on top of the world. In his first full season, he was crowned FMB World Tour champion as a teenager only for his world to crumble around him with a mystery illness.
Having eventually been diagnosed with Epstein Barr virus and Hashimoto’s disease, he has battled his way back to the top of the sport and lines up for Crankworx Rotorua this week!

Definitely, when illness and disability try to stop you....never give up! There’s no such word as can’t! You may need to take time out or to adapt but if you want it hard enough you will get there. Emil proves this 🤗

I totally get that, everytime I get on a bike or even just go on a walk Im just happy to be there doing it. When you're ill, you can loose the ability to even function so easily and so frequently that any chance you get to just do basic sports, it just means the world to you.

This hits me on a personal level - the timing of this video is impeccable, good on this kid for not giving up! At such a high level of competition... Imagine what he could be if it wasn't for his recurring back issues and he could practice as much as others.
This year I plan on returning to Double Black Diamond single track trails, something I haven't done in over 10 years due to recurring back pain. Not pro haha, but this video gives me even more motivation to return to something I thought I'd never do again! :)

I just watched the video from June of last year about Emil's story and commented about my experience with EBV. Seeing this, reminded me of my own experience at roughly the same age with the first half of life with EBV. Parents, please be understanding and learn about this virus. The mental and emotional toil is hard as it is, but it's even worse when your parents and people around you are hard on you like you're "being lazy". I went through it in '95, so luckily now people don't think "it's just mono", but there is still a lot of ignorance around it.

Thank you for putting this together and for Emil being so open and honest with his struggle. I feel like timing is everything and this couldn't have come at a better time (for me). The last year has been a downhill spiral (not the good kind where you're on two wheels grinning ear to ear). With loads of Symptoms that fall under the umbrella of AutoImmune Disorders/Diseases, it can be a scary road to travel. Recently had Explant Surgery (removing my implants) in hopes that my body will return to normal function again. Thank you again, it shows that there is hope and the fun doesn't have to stop!!

I was diagnosed with EBV last April after years of being told i was ok. I felt like i was constantly over trained with flu like symptoms. Red Bull touches on it but nutrition, rest, and stress levels play a huge role. If my resting heart rate goes up 5 points I don’t train until it goes back down or the symptoms come back. Red Bull also has a video of Ken Roczen battling it because of the stress from his crashes, they mention Stevia as a possible supplement. This video answered a lot of questions for me because there’s not much info out there for athletes.

I wasn’t aware that he has this disease, I just recognized that he is an incredibly talented slopestyle rider. So his achievements are even more impressive to me now. This is why in life you treat others with kindness , some people you think are living normal lives deal with insanely challenging situations that Some of us are lucky enough to never experience . Never know what people deal with at home, some of us complain of struggling to get by with perfect health and no real problems . Sometimes we gotta compare ourselves to those that have it worse to realize we have it better and can really change our mindset on our circumstances. This kid has a great mindset , having a major goal to achieve can help one push through hard times .
