a self styled journalist is not a journalist and when you give away the state secrets of a country that is not your own you do the time... all those who provided the info to him got jail time - it's called treason ... but by rights the media rag that printed it all should have gone under too..... as they too gave no forethought to the lives that would be destroyed all because his "fame" was more important than the lives of those putting theirs on the line for the USA while Assange and co handed the enemy their names and addresses - he is nobodies hero

Julian Assange is a great man! Hero of our time! Terrible injustice has been going on for 15 years! We criticize our forebears when someone in their time was unjustly persecute. I can think of Alan Turing and Oscar Wilde. Men punished but later honoured and pardoned long after their deaths. Going back much further, Galileo Galilei and Giordano Bruno. Then even further back Joan of Arc. And finally Māni and Jesus. Oh, and let’s mention Socrates for good measure. In times to come Julian Assange will be honoured. There will be statues erected in public places and venerated scholarships named after him. And us alive today be vilified. “For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.” Hosea 8:7.

  • @technofeeliak
    @technofeeliak 5 місяців тому +1

Let's get something straight... no one is free.
Freedom comes with an equal amount of responsibility.
If you're out in the woods alone, you're responsible for everything which includes the forest, your health and survival and you don't have time to think of being free.
Your thoughts will be dominated by all the responsibilities you have.
When on the other hand you are living in a community, you have to uphold standards.
You have to become skillful in order to earn the means to be able to trade with other people for goods and services.
Now, throw on taxes. The government, which nowadays doesn't even have to justify what they take from you, will force you to work under threat of imprisonment.
You won't be safe, but you'll have the illusion of safety.
Because cops are often corrupt, just like judges, and social workers and anyone with power/influence.
So how free are you to begin with?
If what you say, a few words, can have you fined, alienated, imprisoned even...
and someone else's words can have you punished too, without any wrongdoing on your part?
Then, consider why Julian Assange was a target for years.
Because, he revealed facts the government didn't want exposed.
You're paying taxes, so that the truth can be withheld from you.
You don't want certain responsibilities, and knowing something is enough to put a burden on you morally.
The people you so readily give your power to, your agency, they may not have your best interests at heart.
But, they may also conduct terrible acts on your behalf that will not be made to bear on your conscience.
    It's one heck of a trade-off.
Ever see that movie "the Box"?
The story is, you press a button, with absolutely no electronic mechanism attached and no one present to be witness but yourself...
but by pressing this red button someone dies, someone you don't know, and you get a stack of money.
It's kind of like that isn't it?
You blindly hand over money, which is a measure of your time and effort, and that becomes the means by which the government has agency to manage your life and inflict terrible things on your enemies. But, may also sacrifice you in a numbers game.
    Does anyone talk about this?
So, Julian Assange is free to live in the illusion which has been called "The Matrix" with the rest of us unwitting participants.
How tragic is that? I'm glad for him, but nothing has really been solved, and he did sacrifice so much to make his point which is not been realized.

If you can be free of something, it's emotional burden.
Some people use alcohol and drugs.
Some just rationalize and detach like doctors and police and anyone who faces hard reality.
And some turn to religion, or some form of spirituality and cosmic sense for release.
I just wanted to add this to my previous comment as a positive.

Not everything journalists do in collecting information for release to the public is necessarily ethical. Was bugging people's phones by newspapermen legal? I understand the US's point of view in wanting at least a nominal conviction. As for punishment, well he's punished himself pretty effectively and this will hopefully be acknowledged.
